• Dodge has earned one pole at Talladega since returning to the Sprint Cup Series in 2001 – Stacy Compton in 2001.
• Dodge driver Brad Keselowski is the only current Dodge driver with a win at the 2.66-mile superspeedway in Sprint Cup competition. He won the spring event in 2009, leading only the final lap. He was driving for another team at that time.
THE DODGE BOYS
• Dodge has 207 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series victories.
• Dodge’s most recent win came at Charlotte Motor Speedway in May. Kurt Busch led 252 of 400 laps en route to victory in the Coca-Cola 600. It was his second win of the 2010 season.
• Dodge teams have posted 47 victories since the manufacturer’s return to NASCAR’s premier series in 2001 after being out of the sport since 1977.
• Last Dodge Sprint Cup Win at Talladega: Dave Marcis, 08/08/1976, Talladega 500, 157.547 mph average speed.
• First Dodge Sprint Cup Win at Talladega: Richard Brickhouse, 09/14/1969, 1969 Talladega 500, 153.778 mph average speed.
DODGE IN THE CHASE: TALLADEGA SUPERSPEEDWAY

KURT BUSCH ON RACING AT TALLADEGA
“I’m one that doesn’t take a lot of chances and more times than not plays it more defensively than on the offense. I think that’s been my mentality over the years. The times that I’ve been too aggressive out there and tried to make big bold moves, I wound up wrecked or getting shuffled out at the end and it didn’t turn out well.”
DODGE FAST FACT
Dodge driver Brad Keselowski earned his first NASCAR Sprint Cup Series top -10 finish as the driver of the No. 12 Dodge Charger from the Penske Racing stable. He started 25th and finished 10th at Martinsville.
DID YOU KNOW?
On March 24, 1970, Buddy Baker guided the No. 88 Dodge Daytona to a closed course speed record of 200.447 mph, becoming the first stock car driver to officially exceed the 200 mph mark.
DODGE MOTORSPORTS ENGINEERING QUOTE OF THE WEEK –
"If NASCAR set out to drive engineers crazy, then putting the Talladega race one week after Martinsville will get it done. Martinsville and its single lane, 60 mph mid-corner speeds last week now gives way to a 40-car pack, three wide, at nearly 200 mph this weekend at Talladega. And that's with the same chassis, same body templates and same engine at both places. Using the same equipment, it’s the engineer's job to get the same result – win.”
Howard Comstock – Dodge Motorsports Engineering
DODGE DRIVER QUOTES
At Talladega, if you make your move too early or you’re too aggressive, that means there’s that much more time for things to backfire. Then there are times that if you go too late, you’ll want to kick yourself for not going earlier. That’s why you have to dig down and forecast what’s going on out there on the track. You ask yourself if this guy is an experienced racer or is he one of the younger guys? Has this guy been fast or has he been slow? You’re out there trying to digest all of that and play all your cards right while you’re just inches from the other guys and doing 200 miles per hour.”
Kurt Busch, No. 2 Operation Home Front/ Miller Lite Dodge Charger
“Talladega has always been a wildcard race and it always will be. I really like restrictor-plate races and we've typically run pretty well at places like Talladega and Daytona. Superspeedways remind me of IndyCar Series racing because the outcome depends mostly on aerodynamics. It's like a chess game where you are trying to figure out what to do as the race progresses to position yourself correctly.”
Sam Hornish Jr. No. 77 Mobil 1 Dodge Charger
“You really have to pay attention to how the race unfolds at Talladega. There are times when you need to be patient. There are times when you need to keep your head about you and race smart. But you are going to have to be aggressive at the end. Those are three elements of restrictor-plate racing that I work on throughout the race. I learned that from Dale (Earnhardt) Jr. He gets a lot of the credit for the kind of racer that I am on the plate tracks.”
Brad Keselowski, No 12 Penske Dodge Charger

Dodge Motorsports Notes & Quotes - Kurt Busch Open Interview - Talladega 2
TALLADEGA, Ala. , Oct 29, 2010 - KURT BUSCH (No. 2 Miller Lite Dodge Charger) A COUPLE DRIVERS WERE OVER 200 MPH IN THE DRAFT TODAY. DO YOU ANTICIPATE A TWO-CAR BREAKAWAY ON SUNDAY? “Yeah, there’s something about when two cars hook up with each other, they can really gain speed. The third car can’t keep up. It’s as if the air comes off the first car, clears that second car and lands straight on the third and slows it up. You’re going to see two-car breakaways. Whether you see it in the middle portion of the race or towards the end, there’s probably going to be two or three different groups of two-car tandems because that seems to be the magic number.”
CAN YOU TALK ABOUT THE PUSH DRAFT HERE AT TALLADEGA? “Talladega is just so wide and so generous that it really doesn’t challenge the setup as far as how much grip you have. You’re going to have plenty of grip, so it’s easy to draft and bump around pretty hard. You just hope that you have a smart guy behind you holding the wheel because if the guy behind isn’t connected to the guy in front properly, then big things can happen in a big way with somebody getting turned in front of the entire field. So we hope that things go smooth, yet in practice you have to be able to handle it. Everybody looked very stable and nobody was stepping out of line.”
IN 2004, DID YOU FEEL PRESSURE AND HOW DID YOU DEAL WITH IT? WILL JIMMIE JOHNSON FEEL PRESSURE? “This race (at Talladega) was earlier in the Chase schedule back in 2004. Now, it’s more towards the end. You have to always think that things can go wrong here; you just go in with the best attitude that you can have. This is the race where we were able to take over the point lead for the first time and never looked back. I believe Talladega is that big turning point in the Chase. You never know what can happen. If you survive this race, if you can come home with a good solid finish and you’re in the point lead or lead group, you don’t look back. You take off and run. Guys like (Jimmie) Johnson, (Kevin) Harvick, (Denny) Hamlin, those three have separated themselves and they want to stay out of trouble this weekend. They want to breathe a breath of fresh air afterwards, if they survive. Then they can attack the final three races because that’s what the Chase comes down to.”
“Can Johnson feel pressure? Of course and it’s up to others to do such. We’re too far behind. You have to have Hamlin in there, Harvick in there pushing hard and to make Johnson feel that he’s got some competition that he hasn’t had before. In ’04, we had the tightest Chase race; we had the most guys (still in the championship picture) going into the last four races. When you have more guys in the mix, there’s a lot more going on.”
DO YOU FEEL THE ‘HAVE AT IT BOYS’ MANTRA HAS BEEN POSITIVE THIS YEAR? “The racing action has just been better on the track. The times that you’ve seen great short-track racing or even the high speed superspeedways and mile-and-half tracks where you have chassis configuration versus aerodynamics, guys have challenged each other and raced hard and raced well. Yeah, some guys run into each other or bump here and there. Whether one guy gets spun out or ends up wrecked or it’s just good door-to-door, all of it has to be taken into consideration.
“Sometimes you get to the end of the year and you go, ‘All right, my slate is clean.’ You hope that you go down to Daytona with as many friends as you can find. You don’t really need to get together with others to see who’s on what side or who isn’t. It’s more or less every man for himself.”
DO YOU FEEL LIKE YOU STILL KEEP SCORE IN YOUR OWN HEAD? “I learned from the Honorable Jimmy Spencer on how to keep track of things over time. So yeah, you keep track of guys.”
WHO DO YOU DECIDE TO PAIR UP WITH DURING THE RACE FOR A TWO-CAR RUN? “That’s tough. With this new configuration car and Talladega, definitely two guys break away. That’s something Ryan Newman and I saw back in 2008 when we were teammates. We were practicing in practice how to do the move. Teams and different guys have seen their pattern with it and how long you can stay with it. You start to overheat if you stay behind somebody too long. I made a move last year to jump up in front of my future teammate Brad Keselowski and he ended up timing it just wrong to where I ended up in the inside fence and a big wreck started. That was with just a lap and a half to go. You have your final pit stop and after that, you digest who you’ve been running with all day. Who’s been good all day? Who can you trust? And who would you want to team up with on the frontside or backside of the two-car draft. It really happens after the last pit stop, but you’ve been taking notes all day.”
IS THERE A TYPE OF CAR NOT AS IMPORTANT IN CHOOSING A DRAFTING PARTNER? “Some guys just have the overall raw speed and those are the ones that push really well because they can carry a car that’s a little slower than them to that two-car speed and take off. If you have a mediocre car pushing you, it doesn’t seem to hook up as well.”
IS IT WEIRD TO THINK THAT ROGER HAS NEVER WON A NASCAR CHAMPIONSHIP YET? “Absolutely. It’s amazing to think that he hasn’t won one and that it can happen just around the corner. We’ve got to have Brad do even better than those Gibbs guys because (they) have the overall owner’s championship lead now where Brad has the driver’s championship lead. I hope that Brad wins it. I hope that he wraps it up at Texas next week. We still need to push hard for Roger to give him his championship. It would be really odd that Brad would win it (driver’s championship) and not get the owner’s championship brought home.”
DO YOU CHOOSE A DRAFTING PARTNER BASED OFF THE RACE ON SUNDAY OR OTHER FACTORS? “It comes down to the day’s events; who’s got the fastest car that day. You put those guys in a category of who you’ve run well with in the past. A guy like Kasey Kahne right now, you look for him in the 9 car and he isn’t there, he’s in the 83. Are those guys up to speed with their program on that 83 to draft with? We’ll see on Sunday. A guy like Kasey, I’ve always drafted well with. Right now, I don’t know if he has the normal package in the 83 car.”
A LARGE MAJORITY OF GUYS (40%) HAVE BEEN INVOLVED IN CRASHES HERE AT TALLADEGA, IS THAT ACCEPATBLE? “That’s what makes our sport exciting and fun to enjoy. The excitement level that is part of restrictor-plate racing, it’s the Russian roulette atmosphere. ‘Hey, is my number going to get pulled today. Am I going to survive?’ That’s the whole Talladega atmosphere. Daytona will fit into that next year when it has fresh asphalt and we’re all bunched up in tighter packs. Daytona used to separate a bit and handling was more of an issue. It’s just part of the game. I’ve said that this is the toughest race in the Chase because you can’t predict what’s going to happen. You don’t know how to avoid the big one. And this is that wild card. That’s what wild cards do; they create statistics that don’t match other tracks.”

Dodge Motorsports Notes & Quotes - NSCS Final Qualifying - Talladega 2
Talladega, Ala. , Oct 30, 2010 -
KURT BUSCH (No. 2 Operation Home Front/Miller Lite Dodge Charger) Qualified 3rd
“It was a great lap for us. It’s nice to see all those Penske Dodges up front. Our Dodge ran faster than expected and I’m really excited about our chances on Sunday with the speed that we show by ourselves. That’s the closest I’ve ever been to a pole at either Talladega or Daytona.”
YOU’VE BEEN KNOCKING ON THE DOOR OF A RESTRICTOR-PLATE WIN. YOU MUST BE EXCITED ABOUT TOMORROW? “This is one of the biggest moments of my Friday career at a restrictor-plate weekend, to come into the media center after qualifying. I’ve never been in the top-three. I had a shot at the front row all the way until (Clint) Bowyer went out. It’s a whole different feeling. To see the crew guys slapping high-fives and Steve Addington having that smug smile on his face knowing that he achieved something special. And it gets further back than just the guys here at the track. Our engine shop and fabrication shop who are committed just to build restrictor-plate bodies. It’s really exciting to see our chances unfold in front of us and to be third overall and come into the media center after a qualifying effort after a restrictor-plate track, this is new for my 10 years. I’m savoring the moment. It’s neat. We have our work cut out for us tomorrow. That’s what it’s all about; being in the position and so far we’ve had a great run with our Miller Lite Dodge.”
YOU WERE REALLY STRONG IN A TWO-CAR RUN YESTERDAY; “We were working on stability as far as how the car would handle in the bump draft. It showed that the changes we made to the car helped and now, it’s a matter of being on the right sequence and right strategy for tomorrow. All three Dodges are fast and if we can work together during the race and be there with 20 laps to go, we’ve got a pretty good shot at a win.”
CAN YOU COMMENT ON THE LOSS OF NASCAR’S JIM HUNTER? “I’ll remember the ability he gave me to go talk to him about anything and the way he took me under his wing early on in my career and say, ‘Hey kid, you can do things the hard way or do things the right way.’ He really helped me out and was a good friend of mine. It’s tough to see him go.”
SAM HORNISH JR, (No. 77 Mobil 1 Dodge Charger) Qualified 10th
“I think all three of the Penske Dodges are really fast. I think we’re all excited about tomorrow and think that we’ll be able to work well together in the draft. If we help each other, we should be really strong all day. The Mobil 1 Dodge is really fast in race trim. We weren’t sure what we were going to have in qualifying trim, but it worked out for us. I’m pretty happy with where we’re at so far this weekend.”
BRAD KESELOWSKI (NO. 12 Penske Racing Dodge Charger) Qualified 11th
HOW IS YOUR CAR HEADING INTO TOMORROW? “Our Dodge Charger is pretty good. This race is the great equalizer. I feel like we are all pretty equal. You're gonna have to make the right moves in the draft and put yourself in the right position. I think we'll have a shot at a win tomorrow."
HOW WAS YOUR CAR IN A TWO-CAR DRAFT? “We did a couple of two-car runs and our car was good. It felt solid and seemed to push and get pushed well. It's a little hard to tell. Small changes in pack size really make a difference in the performance of the car. It definitely looked like the Gibbs cars and ECR-engine cars are fast. We've got our hands full, but our Dodges are fast."

SAM HORNISH JR, (No. 77 Mobil 1 Dodge Charger) Finished 15th
“Today was awesome up until the last four laps. The Mobil 1 Dodge was really good all day long. I could push well and get up to the front and lead. I got caught speeding on pit lane, fell back and made our way all the way back to the front. For some reason on that last restart, we just didn’t go. I was really happy with the Mobil 1 Dodge. I just wish that we had a couple more laps there at the end.”
IT LOOKED LIKE YOU COULD PUT YOUR CAR WHEREVER YOU WANTED ON THE TRACK TODAY? “Our Dodge was really fast. We could run up front, fall to the back and power our way back to the front again. There were times when the run I could get in front of guys and get a great push. And then there were times where I would run up on someone and give them a huge push to the front. It was like that all day. I was trying to make friends all day, hoping we could get some help there at the end. Unfortunately, a couple of guys that I had worked with all day weren’t in position at the end to help us out. I wish we had one more lap because our car was that good. We just weren’t able to get a run there the last four laps and that was the deal. Our car was fast. The engine shop did an awesome job giving us fast cars. You just never know how these plate races are going to end.”
TRAVIS GEISLER (Crew Chief, No. 77 Mobil 1 Dodge Charger)
“A really solid weekend overall for the Mobil 1 Dodge. I think the end result could have been a little better. We restarted fourth with four laps to go and had a great feeling that our day may end up in victory lane. A 15th is still a solid run for us here at Talladega. That’s just the way plate racing shakes out. You never know what lane is going to go or what line is the one to be in. We got caught in what might not have been the best line and had to work our way back up to the front. Sam (Hornish) did a great job today. The guys at the Penske engine shop gave us great horsepower this weekend. Great stuff from the Dodge power plant under the hood.”
BRAD KESELOWSKI (NO. 12 Penske Racing Dodge Charger) Finished 10th
“A solid day for the Penske Dodge. I thought that we would be a little stronger. We’re missing a little bit of speed to make our car draft better. This was the last run for this front end, so hopefully we can get a little stronger with the new nose before Daytona. We got a solid finish out of it and I’m proud of everyone at Penske that helped build this car.”
TAKE US THROUGH THE LAST FOUR LAPS: “You just try every line and everything you can think of to get to the front. I picked a couple of good lines and gained a bunch of spots. If we would have had one more lap, I think we could have run up to the front. It’s Talladega. We survived. The car is one piece and we ran strong most of the day. We’ll take it.”
KURT BUSCH (No. 2 Operation Home Front/Miller Lite Dodge Charger) Finished 30th
“Typical Talladega. We were looking to draft to the front with the 56 car (Martin Truex Jr.) before the last caution. On the restart, we were stuck on the outside. The first two rows broke away, then it got three wide and we got shuffled back because the cars in front of our line just didn’t go anywhere. It's disappointing. We ran in the top 10 all day and ready to make a run at the end, but never got the chance. Typical Talladega.”
STEVE ADDINGTON (Crew Chief, No. 2 Operation Home Front/Miller Lite Dodge Charger)
“We had a really fast Miller Lite Dodge, a lot of speed in the car. All weekend, we were pretty happy with the car. After that last caution, we got in that situation where we were in a line and it didn’t go on the last restart. We were better at pushing; we pushed cars to the front all day long. We would have been alright if we had somebody that could go in front us. We had drafted with the 56 earlier and when we hooked up, we could really move. Throughout the race, it didn’t matter if we got shuffled out, Kurt (Busch) could drive right back up there.”
