DODGE AT DOVER INTERNATIONAL SPEEDWAY

· Dodge has five wins at Dover: Richard Petty (2), Ryan Newman (3).

· Richard Petty gave Dodge its first Dover victory at the 1974 Delaware 500. He led 491 of the 500 laps.

· A Dodge has started from the pole 12 times at Dover. The first by Bobby Isaac (129.538 mph) in 1970 and most recent by Ryan Newman (152.925 mph) at the spring event in 2007.

· Dodge drivers Kurt Busch and Brad Keselowski are both seeking their first Sprint Cup win at Dover.

DODGE NEWS AND NOTES

· Robby Gordon’s next scheduled race in the No. 7 Dodge Charger R/T is the Coca-Cola 600. The No. 7 Fast Five/SPEED Energy Dodge will be at Dover this weekend with the driver TBA.

· Kurt Busch has not been outside the top 10 in the Sprint Cup point standings this season. Season high: First (Weeks 3 & 4) Season Low: 8th (current).

"From the "Lady in Black" last week at Darlington, to the “Monster Mile" of Dover this week, is a pretty challenging two week stretch for the Sprint Cup teams. The asphalt 1.36 miles of Darlington is fast and slippery and the one-mile concrete high banks of Dover are just as fast. The banked corners of Dover are so high that the drivers have to use the term "land" when they talk about how the car transitions from the relatively flat straightaways to the incredibly tall banking they impact at each end of this speedway. Controlling the car on corner entry will be a big part of the engineering challenge that the teams will face this week. If you can control corner entry then you can carry momentum through the corner and set up for that next straight-away dash."

We know that we have to make our race cars faster, but to see our team come together and keep digging and take a 15th-place car to a top-three car is a step in the right direction. “To be successful at Dover, you have to stay on top of the changing track conditions during the race. It’s a track where your car can start getting tighter and tighter as the track gets rubbered in and we’ll go in there this weekend definitely with that situation on our minds when it comes to our race setup.

“We’ve had some strong cars there, especially over the last couple of years. We’ve led laps and been in contention for the win several times, but just haven’t been able to pull it off. “What makes Dover so difficult is the fact that it has so much load – you’re asking the car to do a lot of different things. Then you combine the way that the track’s concrete rubbers-in and it really makes your front tires slick. It’s always a challenge to find front grip and what you end up doing is taking away rear grip. That just makes it more challenging to drive when your car gets sideways. With the track being concrete, it makes you become a more disciplined driver. It’s the fine balance between driving your car hard and finding the finesse that you need to drive hard through the center of the corner.”

Tom German leaving Penske Racing

Penske Racing technical director Tom German, who came under fire from Kurt Busch at Richmond two weeks ago, is leaving the team at the end of the month to attend the Sloan School of Management at MIT, FOXSports.com reported.

Busch, who finished 22nd at Richmond, three laps down to the leaders, expressed his displeasure on the radio during the race, saying, “I’m sorry, our day was done when Tom German decided he was in charge.”

Penske officials said German indicated interest in the program last fall, and the team supported him as he applied. Penske said only about 15 percent of those applicants are accepted into the program.

HOW HAVE YOU PREPARED FOR THE WEEKEND AT DOVER? “This has been a good track for us recently racing here at the Monster Mile; a track that you really have to attack with authority. You go out there and have the high banks and you’re really wrestling the wheel and trying to give the throttle pedal all that you can give it. You just have a lot of fun racing this race track. You get out there for a long race, lap times are so competitive. It’s difficult to make up time on the other competitors on the short runs. You set up the car to pay dividends on the long runs, that way you’re not wearing out your tires. We’ve got our work cut out for us. We think that we can get a top 10 this weekend or maybe even better. We just have to continue to make good adjustments on the car.”

DO YOU REMEMBER ANYTHING THAT’S HAPPENED BETWEEN YOU AND KEVIN HARVICK THAT MAY HAVE IMPACTED SOMETHING BETWEEN HARVICK AND YOUR BROTHER? “OK, right! Let’s congratulate Regan Smith on his win last week; I don’t think he’s gotten any coverage whatsoever (laughs). He did a great job to win that race. Congratulations to Furniture Row Motorsports.

“For that issue, I’d say who hasn’t (Kevin) Harvick had an issue with. Everybody has had run-ins. I’ve had run-ins. (Greg) Biffle has had run-ins. You name it and everybody has had run-ins with other guys. I mean, who knows? The way that rivalries are started is from having heated issues out on the race track time and time again. We’ve seen that with guys like Rusty (Wallace) and DW (Darrell Waltrip). We’ve seen that with the Allisons and (Cale) Yarborough. We’ve seen it over the years. It’s nothing different; what we’re rolling through now is what we went through then.”

IS IT MORE OF AN EFFORT TO KEEP YOUR COOL IN THE DRIVER’S SEAT AT DOVER? “Yeah, things happen here so quickly and you’re really fighting the car all race long. Just like me and Tony Stewart a few years back, it takes that one little trip of the trigger and it seems like driver’s fuses are shorter here just because the track demands that much more from the driver.”

YOU MENTIONED LAST WEEK THAT YOU WERE GOING TO TURN YOUR RADIO OFF DURING THE RACE? DID YOU LEARN SOMETHING FROM RICHMOND? “Yeah. Each week is a chance to learn something new. As a driver, the day that you stop learning something, it’s the day that you’re not moving forward. It’s now a better understanding throughout the team on where were going for a direction and what I have to do inside the cockpit to be a team leader and to give us the best result each week out on the track. When I got into the hauler after the race, the team engineer apologized profusely because they put the wrong set-up in the front end of the car. I didn’t know that. We didn’t know that during the race. I didn’t know it, (but) they knew it during the race. It was a tough battle all race long to have the wrong set-up in the car. Things like that happen. I handled it the best way that I could with the guy and said, ‘Hey, people make mistakes’.”

WITH THE EARLY-SEASON STRUGGLES, DO YOU GO INTO CHARLOTTE WITH A POSITIVE ATTIDUDE BASED OFF YOUR SUCCESS THERE LAST SEASON? “I don’t see why not. I think it’s a great opportunity to go to the All-Star race and test some things out. We were at Gresham Motorsports Park this week and ran 530 laps – 10 sets of tires. I ran the most laps in today’s practice. You’re going to see a quantity of laps from me coming up here in the next few months.”

CAN YOU EXPAND ON TOM GERMAN’S DEPARTURE FROM PENSKE RACING? “There’s no departure. From what I understand, he’s going to MIT to pursue his Master’s Degree; I’m not quite sure exactly. Timing is interesting on things and it means that my voice has been heard through the Penske organization.”

Friday’s second Sprint Cup practice at Dover International Speedway was colored Penske.

Penske Racing teammates Kurt Busch and Brad Keselowski led the session, Busch running 157.922 miles per hour and Keselowski following at 157.591.

Ten races into the season, both Penske drivers are still searching for their first win. Busch is eighth in points with five top 10s, but Keselowski trails in 26th in points.

Following the Penske Dodges in practice Friday was the Roush Fenway Racing trio of Greg Biffle, Carl Edwards and David Ragan.

Qualifying for Sunday’s FedEx 400 is scheduled at noon (ET) Saturday.

“We had a decent day going, just didn’t finish it off. That’s unfortunate for our Ruby Tuesday Dodge team. I think the 60 (Carl Edwards) ran over the 20 (Joey Logano) and then all hell kind of broke loose from there. This is a tough place. A little wreck like that down the straightaway and the next thing you know, the whole field is involved. That’s just the way it goes. I’m disappointed for my guys. We had a fourth-place finish going. We’re just racing hard on these restarts; that’s what you have to do to run good. We were all racing hard and the 60 ran over the 20. With tight tracks like this, there’s nowhere to go.”
