Dollar Thrifty sets no-smoking policy in rental cars

Dollar Thrifty Automotive Group Inc. has instituted a no-smoking policy in its Dollar and Thrifty rental cars, company executives said Tuesday.
The new policy, which was implemented Saturday, prohibits smoking by renters at all U.S. Dollar Thrifty corporate stores and participating franchise locations, officials said.
Violators of the no-smoking policy will be assessed a $250 vehicle cleaning fee, company executives said.
President and CEO Scott Thompson said rental cars in which customers have smoked will be immediately grounded upon inspection and removed for a thorough detailing before being returned for customer use.
All rental cars in Dollar and Thrifty fleets display a "No Smoking" sticker notifying renters of the potential charge for noncompliance, Thompson said.
"We are passionate about providing ... a rental experience that is consistent with our high standards, and we think that fresh, clean and smoke-free interiors are essential to achieving our objectives," he said. "We think it is important to follow suit with the rest of the U.S. travel industry's non-smoking approach so that travelers always have a smoke-free means of transportation."
Tulsa-based Dollar Thrifty employs 6,000 people, including 700 in Tulsa.
