RECALL ALERT: 1.7 Million Lexus Vehicles

Toyota Announces Global Recall of 1.7 Million Lexus Vehicles

By Jim Sharifi

Posted: Jan 26, 2011

It looks like Toyota’s rash of recalls is continuing into 2011, as the automaker announced today that it would recall 245,000 Lexus vehicles in the U.S. for potential fuel leaks. Toyota says it “will conduct a voluntary Safety Recall involving approximately 245,000 2006 through 2007 Lexus GS300/350, 2006 through early 2009 Lexus IS250, and 2006 through early 2008 Lexus IS350 vehicles sold in the U.S. to inspect the fuel pressure sensor installation.”

While the recall affects a significant number of vehicles in the U.S., the number is much higher worldwide – in all, 1.7 million vehicles are affected with the lion’s share being recalled in Japan. “The recall stems from defects in the fuel system blamed on insufficient tightening of a fuel pressure sensor which connects to an engine fuel delivery pipe,” says Left Lane News. “Due to the lack proper fitment, over time the pressure sensor can become loose and leak fuel out of a gasket used in the connection between the sensor and the pipe.”

Fortunately, no accidents have been linked to the new recall, although 75 complaints have been filed in North America alone. “Toyota said dealers will inspect the vehicle for fuel leakage, and if none is found, will tighten the fuel pressure sensor with the proper torque,” reports the Detroit News. “If a fuel leak is confirmed, the gasket between the sensor and the delivery pipe will be replaced and the sensor will be tightened with the proper torque.”

Owners affected by the recall will receive a notification in the mail, and Lexus will post information related to the recall on its website. Consumers can get detailed information related to the recall by calling 1-800-255-3987 or at Lexus Recall Information.
