Recall Alert: 130,000 BMW

BMW Recalls 130,000 Cars for Faulty Fuel Pumps

Oct 27, 2010

Quote:
BMW has issued a voluntary recall of 2007 to 2010 model cars after an ABC News report stated that vehicle owners are experiencing sudden reductions in vehicle power.

Cars.com explains: “BMW has just issued a recall of 130,000 cars featuring its twin-turbo six-cylinder engine because of a faulty fuel pump that can fail when the cars are driving at high speeds. The company and National Highway Traffic Safety Administration received complaints about the cars going into a reduced-power or ‘limp home’ mode, which allows drivers to safely pull off the road.”

Affected vehicles include the 2007 to 2010 335i; 2008 to 2010 135i, 535i and X6 xDrive35i; and 2009 to 2010 Z4 sDrive35i.

“In addition, BMW will recall 20,800 six-cylinder X5 models to replace the fuel pump, which uses a lower-pressure unit,” reports The Boston Globe. “If this unit failed, the company said the engine would shut off and cut off power assists to the steering and brakes.”

To date, no injuries have been resulted from the problem. Thomas Plucinsky, a BMW spokesman, recently told The New York Times: “We don’t believe it is a safety issue at all. When the high pressure pump fails completely it is driveable under less power. It is essentially a pretty good driving mode. It reduces the power.”

If you own one of the affected vehicles and experience problems, contact BMW Customer Relations at 1-800-563-4269.
