Recall Alert: 2009-10 Pontiac Vibe

A massive recall of more than two million Toyota vehicles last week has prompted a much smaller recall from Pontiac. After all, Toyota built the last Pontiac. General Motors is recalling 2009 and 2010 Pontiac Vibe wagons due to a potential defect that could lead to sudden, uncontrolled acceleration.
Automotive News explains, “Toyota said it would recall 2.3 million vehicles, including 2009-10 Matrixes, because of a faulty pedal design. That number included some 2009-10 Pontiac Vibes, GM spokesman Alan Adler said today, but GM doesn’t know how many yet.” In fact, Adler told AN, GM “only found out about the recall seven minutes before Toyota notified the U.S. government.”
The Vibe was built under a joint venture between the two companies, but Autoblog notes, “GM pulled out of the partnership last June, and Toyota is reportedly ending production there in March.”
Toyota, Automotive News reports, “engineered and built the Vibes.” The Vibe is nearly identical to the Toyota Matrix wagon. General Motors has essentially shut down the Pontiac brand. There are no free-standing Pontiac dealerships remaining in operation, though a handful of Pontiac-Buick-GMC dealerships may have unsold Pontiac vehicles.
General Motors does not yet have a plan in place to notify Pontiac owners. Adler told AN, “Once GM gets more details from Toyota on how many Vibes are in the recall and how to fix them, the Detroit automaker will notify customers about fixing the problem at Buick-GMC dealerships.”
