Recall Alert: Honda Fit
Posted: Feb. 01, 2010
Honda has issued a recall order for about 650,000 Fit subcompact cars (141,000 in the U.S.) from model years 2007 and 2008, in order to correct a window switch defect that could lead to a vehicle fire.
The window switch, Kicking Tires explains, “can overheat if exposed to liquid. It can smoke, melt and even catch fire. Unfortunately, a fatal accident involving a child led to the recall.”
The fatal accident occurred in South Africa, Business Week notes, “Two fires caused by short-circuited power window switches have been reported in the U.S., Honda spokeswoman Yasuko Matsuura said.”
The recall notice has not yet been filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. The automaker will mail a recall notice to Fit owners in coming weeks, but those who wish to co-ordinate early repairs may contact Honda at (800)999-1009. In the meantime, USA Today advises, “Until U.S. customers are notified of the recall by mail, they should keep their windows rolled up during rain or snow.”
