BMW Recalls 32,000 Vehicles for Possible Fire Hazard

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration announced today that BMW is recalling more than 32,000 vehicles that may have a defect that could lead to an electrical fire. NHTSA says the recall applies to BMW 5-Series, 5-Series Gran Turismo, 7-Series, X5 and X6 vehicles from model years 2008 through 2011 that are equipped with turbocharged V8 or V12 engines.

According to the recall notice, the circuit board for a water pump in certain BMW models may overheat, causing an electrical fire. Though the recall encompasses 32,084 vehicles, only two owners so far have experienced an actual fire.

NHTSA says that BMW will send out recall notices to affected owners, who can have their vehicles fixed at BMW dealerships for free. The recall is expected to start in November.
