RECALL ALERT: Chevrolet Cruze

2011 Chevrolet Cruze Recalled for Detached Steering Wheel

By Rachel Smith

Apr 12, 2011

Chevrolet is recalling 2,100 Cruze models because the steering wheel could fall off. In its recall summary, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration states, “During manufacturing the steering wheel could have been improperly fasted and may detach from the steering column.” If the steering wheel falls off, the driver will have no way to control the vehicle, and as a result, the likelihood of a crash increases.

While there are no reports of accidents or injuries, a Cruze owner logged a complaint on NHTSA’s website: “While driving my new 2011 Chevy Cruze on highway 10 in Minnesota, without any warning or any other indications, the steering wheel fell off in the hands of the driver. We crossed several lanes of traffic, and finally got the car stopped just inches from hitting the guardrail.”

Inside Line reports, “GM told NHTSA that ‘the owner (of the aforementioned Cruze) has said she is willing to accept another General Motors vehicle in place of this vehicle.’" GM says this is “an isolated incident.”

Out of precaution, GM has revised the Cruze assembly process, and has inspected over 2,100 Cruze models. Inside Lines reports that GM has asked dealers to inspect the cars on their lots and contact GM when they are done.

This recall began last week. If you have questions or concerns, you may contact Chevrolet at 1-800-630-2438, or visit the GM Owner Center at GM Owners Center - GM. Cruze owners may also contact NHTSA at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153), or go to Home | Safercar -- National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

This confirms my suspicions - there is no "nut" behind the wheel.
