Honda Recalls 2006-07 Civic Hybrid

It looks like some Civic Hybrid owners may be going in for service sooner than they think, as Honda announced a recall on 2006 and 2007 models. “American Honda Motor Co., Inc., will recall 36,656 Civic Hybrid vehicles from model years 2006 through 2007 in the U.S. to replace the DC-to-DC converter, a component of the Integrated Motor Assist™ hybrid control system,” says Honda in a press release. “The DC-to-DC converter may experience an internal failure that could lead to engine stalling and malfunction of vehicle headlights.”
The DC-to-DC converter is an integral part of the hybrid drivetrain, and some wonder if recalls such as this will hurt consumer confidence. “A major hurdle faced by automakers who sell hybrid or electric vehicles is the customer perception that hybrids and electric cars rely on unproven and overly complicated technology that is prone to failure and expensive to fix,” writes Left Lane News. “Unfortunately, this is one of those cases in which the recall does include a key component of the hybrid drivetrain, the DC-to-DC converter, which is part of the Integrated Motor Assist hybrid control system on the 2006 and 2007 model year Civic Hybrid sedan.”
No crashes or injuries have been reported, and Honda will begin contacting owners on March 18, 2011. Owners who’d like more information on this recall can go to
