Recall Alert: Honda Accord, Civic, CR-V and Others

Reuters reports, "Honda Motor Co said it would recall another 440,000 cars around the world for faulty airbags as rival Toyota Motor Corp faced further probes over its largest-ever safety crisis."
The latest news is an expansion of an earlier recall. The affected models are:
2001-2002 Honda Accord
2001-2002 Honda Civic
2001-2002 Honda Odyssey
2001-2002 Honda CR-V
2002 Acura TL
The Detroit Free Press says, "In those vehicles, Honda said the airbag inflators might deploy with too much force, which could cause the inflator casing to rupture and might cause injury or death."
The recall comes after Honda announced a recall of the Honda Fit subcompact last week, and in the midst of a string of Toyota recalls.
The Free Press reports that, "Honda issued its first recall related to the airbags inflators in November 2008 for 3,940 copies of 2001 Accords and Civics. That recall was based on three complaints dating back to February 2007. In 2009, Honda received five more reports of shards and in June 2009 Honda expanded the recall to 440,000 Accords and Civics from the 2001 model year."
The Washington Post adds, "The NHTSA contacted Honda in August 2009 as part of a review into whether the automaker had acted in a timely way in announcing its broadened recall."
In an official statement, Honda says: "owners of these vehicles will be able to determine if their vehicle requires repair by going on-line or calling. Honda owners can go to
http://owners.honda.com recalls or call (800) 999-1009; Acura owners can go to
My Acura - Recalls or call (800) 382-2238. When owners of these vehicles receive written notification of this recall from Honda, they should contact their authorized Honda or Acura dealer to schedule an appointment for repair. Honda will also follow the mailed notifications with telephone contact to each customer."
