Recall Alert: Honda Expands Airbag Recall

Honda Expands Airbag Recall to 1.6 Million Vehicles

By Jim Sharifi

May 03, 2011

Honda announced that they’re expanding an existing recall for faulty airbag inflators in certain Honda and Acura vehicles. If your car or SUV is affected, the airbags could inflate with too much pressure. “This recall includes certain 2001 and 2002 Accord and Civic, 2002 Odyssey; 2002 and 2003 CR-V, selected 2002 and 2003 Acura 3.2 TL and 2003 Acura 3.2 CL vehicles,” states Honda in a press release. “To ensure that all 2,430 recalled airbag inflator service parts are replaced, the recall is being expanded to include approximately 833,000 vehicles that may require inspection.”

The automaker’s reason for expanding the recall is not due to defects from the factory. “Unlike the first two recalls for the faulty driver’s airbags, the latest recall covers vehicles that did not come from the factory with faulty parts, but rather potentially had faulty Honda parts installed after being involved in a collision,” writes Left Lane News. “Because Honda cannot properly identify exactly which vehicles have the faulty parts, the automaker must recall all 833,000 vehicles and inspect them to determine if they contain the dangerous airbag inflators.”

If you’re vehicle is affected, you’ll want to get it in for inspection since the faulty inflators can be deadly. “Honda has now called back 1.6 million vehicles over the issue since 2008. At least 12 incidents and one death are linked to the issue since 2010,” says the Detroit News. “Honda said it has learned that some faulty parts were installed in these vehicles during repairs and is notifying all owners because it has not been able to determine the specific vehicles that received those parts.”

Owners of affected Honda and Acura vehicles can expect to be notified in late May. In the meantime, you can contact Honda directly at 800-999-1009 or www.recalls.honda.com with any concerns.
