Mercedes-Benz is recalling Sprinter vans from the 2008 to 2011 model years. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the recall only applies to Sprinter 2500 and 3500 models that have an optional three-seat bench in the passenger compartment.
These models may have seat belts that do not meet federal standards. NHTSA explains, stating, “First, those safety belts may not lock as required. Second, the assembly loop may not perform to minimum force requirements.”
In the event of a crash, a faulty seatbelt may not restrain passengers properly, and increase the likelihood of death or injury. Mercedes-Benz has not reported whether there were any accidents or injuries that have resulted from the defective seat belts.
The recall will begin during May 2011. At that time, Mercedes-Benz will inspect and replace seat belts that don’t meet federal standards for free. If you have questions or concerns, you may contact Mercedes at 843-695-5000, or reach NHTSA at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153). You can also visit
