Recall Alert: Toyota Tundras

Toyota must submit data on rusting Tundras

Posted on Monday, November 23rd, 2009 at 2:57 PM EST. (Employee News)

Already facing a number of quality-related problems, Toyota Motor Corp. must submit information to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration today in response to complaints about rusted frames on 2000 and 2001 Toyota Tundra pickups, the Automotive News reported.

NHTSA began a preliminary evaluation of the problem Oct. 6 and gave Toyota the Nov. 20 deadline, the trade paper said. The frames were manufactured by Dana Corp., which also supplied the frames for the 750,000 Tacoma pickups that suffered similar rust problems and were the subject of voluntary recalls and buybacks last year, the Automotive News said.

NHTSA is investigating 20 reports that relate to spare-tire separation and brake system failures resulting from severe frame corrosion on the pickups, the paper said. As of yesterday, the federal agency had received 238 complaints about the 2000 models and 48 about the 2001 models, the story said. (Automotive News)

Toyota recalls Tundra pickups on rusted-frame concern

Posted on Wednesday, November 25th, 2009 at 12:19 PM EST. (Employee News)

Toyota Motor Corp. is recalling 110,000 2000-2003 model year Toyota Tundra pickups after reports that rusted frames in cold weather may cause spare tires under the truck bed to break loose and fall onto the road, the Automotive News reported.

Corrosion of the rear cross-member, which supports the spare tire, also eventually may affect the rear brake line and lengthen vehicle stopping distances, increasing the risk of a crash, Toyota said in a statement Tuesday, the trade publication said. Toyota will contact owners of vehicles in 20 cold-weather states that have high road salt use—including New York, Michigan, Ohio and Pennsylvania—the statement said, the story said. (Automotive News)
