General Motors Co. continues to believe that U.S. auto sales will grow by 2 million next year, to 12.5 million vehicles, GM’s vice president of Chevrolet Global Brent Dewar told dealers today, the Detroit Free Press reported.
The Detroit automaker expects industry sales to hit 10.5 million this year, down from 13.2 million in 2008, the paper said. Dewar and other GM executives met in Novi, Mich., Friday with hundreds of dealers as part of a cross-country tour to share future plans for the automaker, which emerged from bankruptcy July 10, the Free Press said.
About 800 people representing about 430 dealers primarily from Michigan, Ohio and Indiana met at the Rock Financial Showplace to hear from GM executives, the paper said. Dewar said Chevrolet dealers are being encouraged to think “beyond our dominance in trucks” and to start preparing to sell small cars. The Chevrolet Cruze small car is set to launch next year, along the electric-drive Chevrolet Volt, the story said. (Detroit Free Press)
