More bad news for Toyota
February 3rd, 2010
U.S. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood told owners of Toyota vehicles affected by the massive recall to stop driving the cars and trucks until they can be repaired. LaHood’s warning, which contradicts Toyota’s advice to owners, came during testimony before a House Appropriations subcommittee. LaHood later retracted his statement, saying he meant to say just that drivers should get their vehicles repaired, but his earlier words had already made nationwide headlines and major headaches for Toyota.
In addition to the trouble caused by a faulty accelerator pedal
, which has led to the recall of 4.2 million Toyota vehicles worldwide, the
Japanese government has ordered the automaker to investigate troubles with the brakes in the popular Prius hybrid. Japan’s Ministry of Transportation cited hundreds of reports that the braking system of third-generation Prius could be compromised when driving on bumpy roads or in icy conditions. Over 100 complaints about the brakes have been filed in the United States.
