Top fuel efficient vehicles are hybrids, U.S. says

Nine of the top 10 most fuel efficient vehicles are hybrids, the Energy Department and Environmental Protection Agency said today, the Detroit News reported.
The government’s fueleconomy.gov Web site released its list of best and worst in class fuel economy ratings in 16 categories for the 2010 model year, the paper said. Foreign automakers swept the list for more fuel efficient passenger cars and station wagons, while domestic automakers held the top ratings for pickups and full-size vans, the News said.
The Toyota Prius was the best overall with a 51 mpg city and 48 mpg highway rating, the report said. Toyota Motor Corp. had the most efficient subcompact with the Yaris.
The Ford Escape hybrid was the most fuel efficient SUV at 34 mpg city/31 mpg highway, the paper said. The site listed the Jeep® Compass 2WD and Jeep Patriot next with a 23 mpg city/29 mpg highway rating. General Motors Co. had the most efficient standard pickup truck with the Chevrolet C15 Silverado Hybrid, the story said. (The Detroit News)
