Toyota details safety fix

Toyota details safety fix, damage claims mount

Posted on Tuesday, February 2nd, 2010 at 2:24 PM EST.(Employee News)

Toyota Motor Corp. on Monday began shipping parts to fix faulty accelerators in nearly 4.5 million vehicles in North America and Europe, and said it would restart North American production on Feb. 8 after an unprecedented shutdown prompted by the problem, Reuters reported.

The moves by Toyota marked the most detail the automaker has provided on its plans to address a safety issue that threatens its finances and reputation, and dented its U.S. sales for January, the news service said. Lawsuits announced on Monday claimed Toyota had ignored signs of trouble with some of its top-selling models, Reuters said. The suits are part of what is expected to be a wave of litigation against the automaker for claims ranging from losses on car resale values to injury and death, Reuters said.

Analysts and dealers said it would take months for the automaker to fix all of the vehicles at risk of having an accelerator pedal stick in the open position, the new service said. Toyota’s U.S. dealers said they would begin training on Tuesday on how to repair vehicles under recall by inserting a metal plate designed to keep the pedal from sticking, according to the Reuters report. Some Toyota dealerships said they would stay open around the clock to speed customer repairs or hire more mechanics to fix cars overnight, the story said. (Reuters)

Toyota pays dealers up to $75,000

Toyota pays dealers up to $75,000 for longer hours

On Wednesday February 3, 2010, 11:47 am

DETROIT (AP) -- Toyota Motor Corp. is giving U.S. dealers payments of up to $75,000 to help win back customers' trust in the wake of a massive safety recall.

In a letter obtained by The Associated Press, Toyota group vice president Bob Carter thanks dealers for extending service hours and providing car washes and other services. Carter says the payments will help with those measures.

Toyota recalled 2.3 million vehicles in the U.S. last month because their accelerator pedals may stick and cause crashes. The automaker is sending dealers parts to repair the pedals this week.

Toyota is sending checks this week based on the number of cars each dealer sold last year. Dealers who sold fewer than 500 cars will get $7,500. Dealers who sold more than 4,000 will get $75,000.
