Toyota Motor Corp. said it’s hiring 850 workers at its San Antonio truck plant, expanding the labor force by 49 percent, to build Tacoma pickups there next year, Bloomberg reported.
The expanded work force will help make the small trucks on the same assembly line as the full-size Tundra as Toyota shuts a factory in Fremont, Calif., the news service said. About 100 employees have already been added, with the rest to be brought on by year end, spokesman Mike Goss told Bloomberg. Overall employment at the plant will rise to 2,600.
Toyota is investing about $100 million on modifications to handle Tacoma production in Texas, the publication said. The plant will resume two production shifts starting in February, five months before Tacoma assembly begins, the story said. (Bloomberg)
