Toyota May Reimburse Owners for Rental Cars

Good news, Toyota and Lexus owners: getting recall work performed on your car may get much easier soon, and the company may reimburse you for rental car or taxi expenses you incur while waiting for the dealership to perform recall repairs. The benefit is already being offered in New York, but may soon be available in all states.
The New York Times explains, “Toyota has agreed to provide free pickup and return of recalled cars, free rental cars or taxi reimbursement for the owners of the half million or so Toyotas in New York State that are being recalled, Attorney General Andrew M. Cuomo said Wednesday.” Later that day, Toyota executive Yoshimi Inaba “told a Congressional hearing that the company planned to offer the benefit nationwide.”
A Toyota spokesperson told the Wall Street Journal that Inaba wasn’t referring to any specific program when he said the benefit could be offered nationwide. Instead, he “was referring to additional steps that Toyota dealers across the country are voluntarily taking to ensure that the recall is as quick and convenient as possible for customers.”
However, representatives of many states have asked the company to commit to a formal agreement, like that reached with New York, nationwide. “Within hours” of the announcement, Reuters reports, “A spokeswoman for the National Association of Attorneys General told Reuters the group ‘had made a request to Toyota to extend New York's agreement to all states.’”
