Toyota to slash Prius price to match Insight

Toyota to slash Prius price to match Insight

Posted Thursday, Apr 2, 2009, 2:26 pm in Industry News

Toyota Motor Corp. will cut the price of its new and upgraded Prius, setting a 2.05 million yen starting price ($20,750), in Japan that is on par with the newly released Honda Insight, the Automotive News said today in a story.

Japanese dealers were notified of the pricing policy for its redesigned 1.8-liter gasoline-electric hybrid on March 25, dealers told the Automotive News. Pricing has not officially been released and Toyota officials declined to comment, the paper said.

The move appears to be part of a “high-stakes price war” between Toyota and Honda over the hybrids, the article said. The Insight went on sale in the United States in March, starting at $20,470, including delivery. The third-generation Prius goes on sale next month and had been expected to start around $24,000, the story said.
