Toyota undecided on resuming Mississippi plant work

Toyota Motor Corp. said it hasn’t decided to resume construction of a Mississippi plant that was idled last year, after a Japanese newspaper reported that the company intends to build Corolla small cars there, Bloomberg reported.
Toyota will restart work on the Blue Springs, Miss., factory with a target of opening it by March 31, 2011, the Nikkei newspaper said today, without saying where it got the information, the Bloomberg story said. The goal is to build 100,000 Corollas a year at the plant before adding production of Prius hybrids, Nikkei said and Bloomberg reported.
No decision on Blue Springs has been made, Mike Goss, a spokesman for Toyota’s North American manufacturing unit in Erlanger, Kentucky, said in an e-mail. Toyota, the world’s largest automaker, announced in December 2008 that it would halt work on the Mississippi factory, as U.S. sales slumped in the recession, the story said. (Bloomberg)
