Toyota wants to keep NUMMI partnership with GM

Toyota Motor Corp. wants to maintain its 25-year partnership with General Motors at the California plant that builds the Pontiac Vibe, Toyota Tacoma pickup and Toyota Corolla compact sedan, the Automotive News reported.
But it’s unclear if GM wants to continue the partnership, the publication said. GM plans to phase out the Pontiac division by the end of next year as part of its reorganization, the trade publication said. GM had planned to build the 2010 model of the Pontiac Vibe with Toyota at the plant, the paper reported.
GM CEO Fritz Henderson was non-committal when discussing NUMMI during a press conference yesterday, the Automotive News said. The 2010 Vibe has been certified for sale by the EPA and is on the EPA’s list of 2010 vehicles that have been given fuel economy ratings, the story said.
In 2008, the plant, New United Motor Manufacturing Inc. or NUMMI, built 271,202 Corolla and Tacoma vehicles for Toyota and 70,839 Vibe cars for Pontiac. GM is negotiating with Toyota for another vehicle and doesn’t want to quit the partnership, a GM spokesman told Automotive News last month. (Automotive News)
