U.S. fleet shrinks by 4 million vehicles
January 6th, 2010
According to the Earth Policy Institute, the United States acquired 10 million new vehicles in 2009 while scrapping 14 million, bringing the total number of registered vehicles from 250 million to 246 million. The world’s largest user of petroleum, the United States has around 305 million people (including those below driving age).
Of the registered vehicles, around half are cars and around half are trucks, with one million buses.
While the Earth Policy Institute credited new mass transit systems for the change, it is also possible that the economy has led many people to drop “extra” cars, de-registering vehicles that they do not use to save on the insurance or scrapping second or third cars rather than paying for major repairs; and, probably more significantly, has led to the temporary or permanent retirement of many commercial trucks and fleet vehicles.
The report, spread through Reuters, used data from the Federal Highway Administration and R.L. Polk & Company.
