UAW may balk at concessions for Ford

A key UAW official says hourly workers at Ford Motor Co. are unlikely to agree to more concessions similar to those negotiated with General Motors Co. and Chrysler Group, even as Ford requests givebacks, the Automotive News reported.
Ford, which is meeting with the UAW Aug. 25, is seeking more savings, said Anderson Robinson Jr., president of UAW Local 900, which represents workers at Ford’s Wayne, Mich., assembly plant, the story said. Ford leaders say they won’t be “disadvantaged” by concessions the UAW gave GM and Chrysler as the two companies went through bankruptcy reorganization. Those concessions range from a no-strike pledge to a better deal on retiree health care, the Automotive News said.
But with Ford’s rising market share and stock price, hourly workers are resistant to sacrificing more, Robinson noted, the paper said. Concessions granted to Ford in March were approved by just 59 percent of all hourly employees. Ford argues that GM and Chrysler today are saving more money on their recent labor deals than Ford, the story said. (Automotive News)
