Reuters reports that Ford unit Volvo Cars introduced a concept car on Monday that combines a plug-in charged lithium battery with a diesel motor, technology that it aims to have on the market in 2012.
The plug-in hybrid car, developed in partnership with Nordic power utility Vattenfall, can run on battery power for up to 50 kilometers, said Volvo Cars chief executive Stephen Odell.
Emissions would be below 50 grams of carbon dioxide per kilometer, about half the emissions of the best hybrids on the market, Odell added. He called on politicians to help make the new technology affordable for consumers. (Reuters)
