VW Polo Named World Car of the Year
Apr. 02, 2010
Volkswagen is taking home the coveted “World Car of the Year” award for the second consecutive year. Yesterday at the New York Auto Show, 59 automotive journalists from 25 countries chose the Volkswagen Polo as the winner.
“Last year, Volkswagen’s Golf took home the award, while the Mazda2 won the 2008 World Car of the Year award,” says Left Lane News.
The Polo beat out 30 other entries, including the two other finalists, the Mercedes-Benz E-Class and Toyota Prius. The voters test-drove all 30 entries from July 2009 through January 2010.
Though the Polo is currently sold in Europe, it’s set to make its U.S. debut sometime in 2010. It’s speculated to come in a four-door hatchback style with at least two engine options and front-wheel drive.
In related news, Bark Buckle UP also bestowed a decidedly less prestigious – but no less important – award at the New York Auto Show. The pet safety group named the Ford Edge as “Pet Safe Vehicle of the Year.”
Top Speed cites the press release, which expands upon the importance of pet safety in cars: "‘Most people don’t think about it, but in only a 35 mph accident with a 60-pound pet it becomes a 2,700-pound projectile. This will injure the pet, passengers, driver or the pet may escape the vehicle and cause a second accident or become agitated and bite the first responder that is on scene doing their job,’ stated [Bark Buckle UP’s founder Christina] Selter.”
The organization cites the Edge’s safety features, flexible seating and large cargo area as big advantages when traveling with pets.
“We still think it is a little silly, but, hey, if it is grand enough to be done at the 2010 New York Auto Show then it has our attention and little Fido’s attention too,” comments Top Speed about the award.
