Question Will Ford & GM Follow Chrysler's Move?

Will Ford & GM Follow Chrysler's Move?
By Roger Nachman
04/15/2011

Chrysler announced the other day that it would be integrating natural gas into vehicles, and would start selling them by 2017, just 6 years away.

Could this be the start of a major trend, and if so, will Ford and General Motors follow suit?

Chrysler appears to be doing this, because compressed natural-gas vehicles are cheaper than electric cars. The Chevy Volt will run you around $41,000 before tax credits, and the Nissan Leaf starts at $32,000 before credits.

There is also a bill on the floor of Congress that would allow the the government to offer credits to promote and produce natural-gas vehicles, similar to what it does with electric cars.

If natural gas vehicles take off, and Ford and & GM decide to go this route as well, then Chesapeake Energy , which just announced the purchase of Bronco Drilling this morning, will be the way to play it.
