Headlight sensing rearview mirror issue.

I have now finally decided to address this issue! I have a 2011 Detonator series Nitro; My wife and I thoroughly enjoy it, and we even use it to tow our travel trailer! Other than the crappy electric window issues that we ALL should be familiar with by now, we have had very few issues. The one problem I would like to address is the relatively non-functioning auto-darkening rearview mirror, that was apparently not well thought out by the good folks at Dodge, as in our case, with our particular series Nitro, our rear windows have a pretty decent factory installed tint. This has always hindered the headlight sensor in the mirror from properly activating! We don't want to replace the rear window, so THAT option is out. I would have no problem replacing the rearview mirror with a simple day/night bottom lever type, EXCEPT, the existing unit also contains the MIC for hands-free phone use.
Does anyone know of a replacement mirror that would just have the manual day/night lever, and include a hands-free microphone that is compatible with this year and series Nitro? Has anyone else had this issue? Would love to hear about it!

Well I would have thought there was an adjustment but NO! So the mirror does work? Not seen this issue before.


AUTOMATIC DAY/NIGHT MIRROR SYSTEM
The automatic day/night mirror switch allows the driver a manual control of whether the automatic dimming feature is operational. This switch is a momentary rocker-type switch located on the lower rear-facing surface of the mirror housing. When Auto is selected, a Light-Emitting Diode (LED) on the mirror housing just to the right of the switch illuminates to indicate that automatic day/night mirror is turned on. When Off is selected, the LED is turned off. The mirror also senses the backup lamp circuit, and will automatically disable its self-dimming feature whenever the transmission gear selector is in the Reverse position.

The automatic day/night mirror sensitivity cannot be repaired or adjusted. If any component of this unit is inoperative or damaged, the entire automatic day/night inside rear view mirror unit must be replaced.

A thin layer of electrochromatic material between two pieces of conductive glass make up the face of the mirror. Two photocell sensors are used to monitor light levels and adjust the reflectance of the mirror. The ambient photocell sensor faces forward, to detect the outside light levels. The headlamp sensor is located on the mirror housing just to the left of the switch and facing rearward, to detect the light level received at the rear window side of the mirror. When the difference between the two light levels becomes too great (the light level received at the rear of the mirror is much higher than that at the front of the mirror), the mirror begins to darken.

DIAGNOSIS AND TESTING
AUTOMATIC DAY/NIGHT MIRROR

For complete circuit diagrams, refer to the appropriate wiring information.
1. Check the fused ignition switch output (run/start) fuse in the junction block. If OK, go to step 2. If not OK, repair the shorted circuit or component as required and replace the faulty fuse. 2. Turn the ignition switch to the On position. Check for battery voltage at the fused ignition switch output (run/start) fuse in the junction block. If OK, go to step 3. If not OK, repair the open fused ignition switch output (run/start) circuit to the ignition switch as required. 3. Disconnect the overhead wire harness connector from the automatic day/night mirror connector receptacle. Check for battery voltage at the fused ignition switch output (run/start) circuit cavity of the overhead wire harness connector for the automatic day/night mirror. If OK, go to step 4. If not OK, repair the open fused ignition switch output (run/start) circuit to the fuse in the junction block as required. 4. Turn the ignition switch to the Off position.

Check for continuity between the ground circuit cavity of the overhead wire harness connector for the automatic day/night mirror and a good ground. There should be continuity. If OK, go to step 5. If not OK, repair the open ground circuit to ground as required. 5. Turn the ignition switch to the On position. Set the parking brake. Place the transmission gear selector lever in the Reverse position. Check for battery voltage at the backup lamp switch output circuit cavity of the overhead wire harness connector for the automatic day/night mirror. If OK, reconnect the overhead wire harness connector to the automatic day/night mirror connector receptacle and go to step 6. If not OK, repair the open backup lamp switch output circuit as required.

6. Place the transmission gear selector lever in the Neutral position. Place the automatic day/night mirror switch (2) in the Auto (LED (1) next to the switch is lighted) position. Cover the forward facing ambient photocell sensor to keep out any ambient light.

7. Shine a light into the rearward facing headlamp photocell sensor (3). The automatic day/night mirror should darken. If OK, go to step 8. If not OK, replace the faulty automatic day/night mirror unit. 8. With the mirror darkened, place the transmission gear selector lever in the Reverse position. The automatic day/night mirror should return to its normal reflectance. If not OK, replace the faulty automatic day/night mirror unit.

NOTE: The ambient photocell sensor must be covered completely, so that no light reaches the sensor. Use a finger pressed tightly against the sensor, or cover the sensor completely with electrical tape.

I would take a flash light and shine it in to the mirror's sensor, you should be able to see dimming right after you do that to see if the mirror is working. You can turn the feature On or Off by pressing the power button at the base of the mirror. A light in the button will illuminate when the dimming feature is activated.

Guess you could buy a replacement mirror and microphone but it sure would be expensive!

There are some listed on eBay. Maybe one could be found locally at a wrecking yard? Problem is would this solve your issue? GOOD LUCK!
