Alpine Type-S Speakers Review

Alpine Type-S Speakers Review

Alpine is a popular brand for aftermarket audio upgrades for your car. We take a look at its bestselling speakers.

Aug 10, 2018

With so many car speakers available in today’s marketplace, you might feel completely overwhelmed trying to narrow down your choices. A quality, yet affordable, lineup of speakers from Alpine is the Type-S, designed to be a budget-friendly upgrade.

Overall, the Alpine Type-S speakers provide a great sounding speaker at a competitive price and are ideal as an OEM upgrade since they come in a variety of sizes. Best of all, they can run off the factory head unit.

The entire lineup of Type-S speakers have 4-ohm impedance and shallow mounting design for easy installation. Each speaker cone is constructed from tuned poly/mica for faster energy transfer and clarity. Naturally there is a rubber surround on each woofer, while the magnet comes from high grade strontium.

Each set also features silk dome swivel tweeters, which can swivel up to 10 degrees so you can adjust them for optimum listening position. The tweeters come equipped a neodymium magnet.

For the price, the Alpine Type-S lineup are midrange offerings that perform really well, even if you’re using a factory head unit. They don’t require a lot of power to sound great, which is ideal for car owners who are looking for an upgrade that doesn’t require a full custom stereo installation. Since they all feature tweeters, you can expect these speakers to provide solid high-range accuracy.

Below, we take a look at all the different sizes and models that are available in the Type-S lineup. You can see their power ratings, sensitivity, frequency response range, and mounting depths. We also mention tweeter sizes for each speaker.

Alpine SPS-410

The Alpine SPS-410 Type-S speakers are 4-inch, coaxial 2-way speakers with 45 watts RMS power handling capacity or 140 watts peak power (per speaker). SPL is rated at 86 dB, while frequency response is 97 Hz to 22 kHz. The SPS-410 has a mounting depth of 1.65625 inches. Each speaker features a 0.75-inch wide range silk dome tweeter.

Alpine SPS-510

The Alpine Type-S 5.25-inch speaker is a 2-way coaxial unit with 55 watts RMS power handling capacity or 170 watts peak (per speaker). Frequency response range is 80 Hz to 22 kHz, while SPL is 87 dB. Mounting depth for this speaker is 1.96 inches. The SPS-510 features a 0.75-inch wide range silk dome tweeter.

Alpine SPS-517

The SPS-517 is a 5×7-inch coaxial 2-way speaker, rated at 75 watts RMS or 230 watts peak (per speaker). SPL is rated at 88 dB, while frequency response is 73 Hz to 22 kHz. These 5×7-inch speakers feature a 1-inch wide-range silk dome tweeter. Mounting depth required is 1.34375 inches.

Alpine SPS-610C

If you prefer a 6.5-inch component 2-way speaker system, the SPS-610C separates the tweeters from the speaker. Again, these are rated at 80 watts RMS or 240 watts peak with 1-inch wide range silk dome tweeters. The speakers require 2.25 inches of mounting depth, while the tweeters need 0.75 inches.

Alpine SPS-619

The 6×9-inch offering in Alpine’s Type-S lineup is the SPS-619, a 3-way speaker set. These speakers are rated at 85 watts RMS or 260 watts peak (per speaker) and feature a 1-inch wide range silk dome tweeter. Frequency response is 65 Hz to 23 kHz, while SPL is 90 dB. The speakers require 3 inches of mounting depth.

Alpine SPS-110TW Tweeters

If you’re looking to just purchase standalone tweeters, the Alpine SPS-110TW feature a copper-clad aluminum voice coil, copper shorting cap, high-grade neodymium magnet, and aluminum bobbin. These tweeters deliver a best-in-class power handling of 100 watts RMS and 300 watts peak. The small in-line crossover provides a 12 dB/octave slope.

The Alpine SPS-110TW come with a 15-degree swivel flush cup mount and has 0.75-inch mounting depth.
