Alfa Romeo Tonale Concept is Italy’s Take on a Tiny Hybrid Crossover
Mar 05, 2019
A new hybrid Alfa Romeo could be on the way, with the automaker presenting an electrified compact crossover concept at the 2019 Geneva Motor Show this week.
The Alfa Romeo Tonale Concept advances the automaker’s modern-day design language, introducing slimmer lighting elements and sharper lines. The company looked to its past for inspiration when designing the crossover, with the ‘phone dial’ wheels inspired by the 33 Stradale, side details inspired by the Duetto and Disco Volante Spider and headlights inspired by the SZ and Brera.
Inside, the Tonale features a driver-oriented layout with leather trimmed seats, Alcantara accents, and aluminum trim. A 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster and 10.25-inch touchscreen are mounted on the dash, creating a “seamless and fluid multitasking interface that allows the driver to have all the latest features and functionality readily available at their fingertips,” Alfa says.
The infotainment system is running the latest Alfa software with two new modes called ‘Alfista’ and ‘Paddock’. Alfista is essentially an Alfa Romeo social media network offering an in-car interface for Alfa Romeo clubs and community events, while ‘Paddock’ serves as an in-car garage and market “for real-time viewing and purchasing of the latest interior and exterior performance upgrades and equipment.”
Alfa Romeo didn’t provide any details on the concept’s plug-in hybrid powertrain. The Italian automaker says the concept previews its “first plug-in hybrid and the first compact utility vehicle,” though, so it seems as though it plans on putting it into production.
The Alfa Romeo Tonale Concept will be on display at the 2019 Geneva Motor Show all this week.
