Dodge launches 2007 Dodge Nitro

Dodge officially unveiled the new Nitro today in Chicago, and Autoblogger-on-the-spot John Neff sent us a raft of photos and specs on the new, mid-sized SUV. (That's the R/T model shown above.)

Dodge continued its Chicago trend of unveiling innovative storage and packaging solutions (see the Rampage concept truck post) with an easy-loading roll-out storage area floor behind the Nitro's rear seats.

With a maximum towing capacity of 5,000 lb, and a choice of a 210 hp 3.7-liter V6 or the R/T model's 255 hp 4-liter V6, the Nitro looks like a promising contender. Export versions of the Nitro will have diesel power available in 2007.

Marketing Campaign for the All-New 2007 Dodge Nitro is Set to Reignite on Nov. 5 Across Multiple Media Platforms

  • Campaign has a strong focus on men, yet reaches out to women seeking a masculine mid-size SUV
  • Consumers will be migrated to the new and improved Dodge Web site for in-depth product information
  • 2007 Dodge Nitro is the first mid-size sport-utility vehicle from the Dodge brand
The marketing campaign for the all-new 2007 Dodge Nitro, announced today by Chrysler Group executives, is a lot like the vehicle itself: heavy on the masculine cues yet equipped to attract female buyers to the Dodge brand's newest nameplate and first mid-size SUV.

And, because so many consumers get a big chunk of their vehicle information from the Internet, all elements of the marketing campaign for the Dodge Nitro will direct them to www.Dodge.com/Nitro. There, they can learn everything there is to know about the Dodge Nitro on a Web page whose content has been improved by 77 percent since the marketing launch of the all-new 2007 Dodge Caliber earlier this year.

A 30-second spot titled "Jump" provided a sneak preview of the Dodge Nitro campaign when it aired during the 2006 World Series in October. The marketing campaign begins in earnest on Nov. 5 with a new spot on network TV titled "Planet" running on CBS NFL, FOX NFL Sunday, NASCAR racing on NBC and "Law & Order" on TNT. "Planet" will also be shown in movie theaters starting next month. Other elements of the campaign include general market print ads, TV and print campaigns for multicultural markets, events, gaming integration, radio spots, interactive marketing, direct mail, and promotions.

"The mid-size sport-utility market is characterized by vehicles with overall bland designs that many consumers find boring," said Tom Loveless, Director - Dodge Marketing and Global Communications. "The 2007 Dodge Nitro will light a spark to the mid-size SUV segment. With its confident, masculine design, performance, features, technology and safety systems, the Dodge Nitro is the SUV to which men aspire and that women appreciate."

"Media placements for the Dodge Nitro campaign will be where you'd expect Dodge to be: TV sports programming, men's magazines and gaming," said Mark Spencer, Senior Manager - Dodge Marketing and Global Communications. "At the same time, the campaign will be in front of women using mass media not usually associated with the Dodge brand and its 'Grab Life by the Horns' persona."

Examples, said Spencer, are: Dodge Nitro ads on "Desperate Housewives" (ABC) and "Crossing Jordan" (NBC); print ads in such magazines as Domino, Ready-Made, Home, Martha Stewart Blueprint, Essence, Ebony and Latina People en Espanol; and Web sites, including HGTV, DIY, The Home Depot, The Nest/The Knot, Realtor.com, AOL Home/Organizing and MSN Lifestyle: Home.

Still, the primary targets of the Dodge Nitro marketing campaign are men with three particular passions: sports/fitness, social networking/entertainment and personalization (that is, how men create and define their personal space, for example, creating a 'man den' in the basement or garage).

Dodge Home Page - As the focal point of the Dodge Nitro marketing campaign, the Dodge brand Web site has been drastically improved to meet the needs of shoppers who routinely visit the Web long before they visit a dealer. Compared to the launch of the Dodge Caliber, the landing pages for the Dodge Nitro have more rich media, more dynamic photos, more video and more sound. The site has information on more than 50 product features, including exterior styling, the five-passenger seating and other interior features, safety systems such as Electronic Stability Program, powertrain options, including the new 4.0-liter V-6 engine, modules like the new LOAD 'N GO™ cargo floor, tech features like the optional MyGIG™ Multimedia Infotainment System, pricing and more.

"The improvements to the Dodge Web site allow us to expand and deepen the story of the 2007 Dodge Nitro for consumers," said Spencer. "The new site is more intuitive. It provides a virtual walk-around tour of the vehicle. There is more relevant purchase information. We even streamlined the credit application process that interfaces with Chrysler Financial."

Online - Complementing the Dodge site will be marketing elements for the Dodge Nitro that address the three passion points at such online sites as Yahoo! Sports, SI.com, ESPN and YouTube, AOL Black Voices, The Onion and Ticketmaster for entertainment; and BET.com, The Home Depot MSN Latino, Batanga and MSN for personalization.

Television - The schedule has lots of TV sporting events: NFL games on CBS, FOX and the NFL Network, ESPN Monday Night Football, NCAA bowl games, Telemundo Soccer and others; plus cable sports TV, such as NBA and NHL games on TNT. Prime time shows include "Medium," "My Name is Earl" and "Law & Order: SVU," all on NBC; "24," "House," and "Prison Break" on FOX; and "Grey's Anatomy" and "Dancing with the Stars" on ABC. Late-night programming is on tap, too: "The Tonight Show with Jay Leno" and the "Late Show with David Letterman," among others.

DIRECTV - Dodge is the exclusive automotive sponsor of NFL Sunday Ticket, the satellite TV program for football junkies. The Dodge Nitro is being advertised on many of the program's outlets, including Enhanced Sunday Ticket, NFL Game Mix and Player Tracker.

Print - Dodge Nitro print ads will run in nearly 70 magazines, including general market (Spin, Entertainment Weekly, People, Bicycling, Men's Fitness, Men's Health, Maxim, Men's Journal, Wired, Blender, Paste, Rolling Stone, Sporting News, Sports Illustrated);African American (Essence, Complex, Jet, Rides, DUB, Vibe); Hispanic (Audrey magazine, ESPN Deportes, Fox Sports en Espanol, Estylo, Tu Cinda Laos Angel, Urban Latino) and Asian (India Today, Korean Journal, Asian week, East West magazine).

Gaming integration - Later this year Nitro will be integrated into the NHL 2K7 video game available on Xbox 360, Xbox, PS2 and PS3. The vehicle will be used in a custom mini-game, custom billboards, sponsorship between periods, voice-overs and stars of the game sponsorship.

Also, a Dodge Nitro is the top prize in an online video game competition, Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six Vegas Challenge, which features Dodge vehicles integrated into the game. A two-page spread announcing the program is in the current issue of Xbox, PC Gamer, and Playstation magazines. Gamers can register for the tournament beginning Nov. 6 at www.gamestop.com/rainbowsixtournament.

TV Spot Descriptions

In "Planet," a crane is off-loading a 2007 Dodge Nitro from a ship when the chains break, sending the vehicle crashing to the ground. It breaks through the pavement and begins a downward journey, first past a subway station and then through the Earth's sub-terrain. The Nitro falls past strange underground scenery -- both dry and wet -- inhabited by dinosaurs and gnome-like creatures. After dropping past Hell, the vehicle reaches China, where it crashes through the terrain on its roof, then rights itself on all four wheels, all without a scratch.

"Jump" takes place in a parking lot. A motorist whose car won't start asks the driver of a Dodge Nitro, "Could you give me a jump?" After the battery cables are attached between the two vehicles, the Dodge Nitro owner cranks the engine, which sends the stalled vehicle straight up in the air, out of view. After a few seconds the car comes crashing to the ground. The driver, wobbly but unhurt, starts to exit his mangled car, only to have the driver door come off in his hand.

There are four 15-second African American spots.

In "Martial Smarts," a man breaks a stack of bricks with his head, and nearly passes out. The scene freezes and words "That's Stupid" flash on the screen. A Dodge Nitro driver who has been watching the martial arts exhibition walks up to an equally large stack of bricks, pulls out a sledge hammer and uses it to break through all the bricks. Flashing on the screen this time are the words, "That's Nitro."

In "Lil' Flip," two fathers watch as their sons play on a trampoline. The first boy does a single reverse flip. "That's my boy," says his dad, proudly. "That's cute," flashes on the screen. The next youngster does a series of high-speed reverse flips on the trampoline that are worthy of an Olympic gymnast. The second father, who is the Dodge Nitro driver, smiles and says, "That's MY boy!" Again, "That's Nitro" flashes on the screen.

In "My Girl," a man and a woman are sitting in a Dodge Nitro parked on a city street. An angry-looking tough guy walks up to the driver's window and says, "Hey, man, that's my girl!" The scene freezes and "That's Aggressive" flashes up. The man and women are unconcerned. The woman leans over to the tough guy and says, "I was your girl." "That's Nitro" flashes on the screen. The driver smiles, rolls up the window and drives away.

"Arrival Time" opens with a Dodge Nitro owner parking his car at his job. His boss approaches, angrily pointing at his watch. "Well, Mr. Man, you're late!" he says. "That's Bossy" flashes on the screen. The driver remains calm, reaches over to his boss's wrist watch and resets the time back. "Now I'm early," he says with a smile, and strolls away. "That's Nitro" flashes on the screen.

All four of the African American spots end with an announcer saying, "Bold is not enough."

Two 30-second TV spots are also being developed for the Hispanic market.

Specs are as follows:

DODGE TO IGNITE MID-SIZE SUV MARKET:
INTRODUCES ALL-NEW 2007 DODGE NITRO

• First Mid-Size SUV for Dodge
• Distinctive Style, Sporty Performance and Cargo Flexibility
• Offers Full-Size Capability in a Mid-Size SUV

The Dodge brand — which is no stranger to creating innovative automotive products and features — is spicing up the mid-size SUV segment with the 2007 Dodge Nitro, a new sport-utility vehicle whose bold and aggressive styling matches its dynamic performance.

“The Dodge Nitro’s styling delivers something extra; that little something mid-size buyers are still searching for — attitude,” said George Murphy, Senior Vice President – Global Marketing. “In addition, the Dodge Nitro offers many features that are not typical of a mid-size SUV, such as two V-6 engines, 20-inch tires and chrome-clad aluminum wheels and a performance suspension.”

The 2007 Dodge Nitro is the first mid-size sport-utility vehicle for Dodge and complements the brand’s current lineup of cars, minivans, trucks, commercial vehicles and a full-size SUV.

“Being the first mid-size SUV for the brand, Dodge Nitro had to personify the bold, powerful and street-smart attitude of Dodge,” said Murphy. “In a world of mostly bland SUVs, the 2007 Dodge Nitro has the design, engineering and performance to inspire consumers and ignite the mid-size SUV market.”

Three models are available: Dodge Nitro, Dodge Nitro SLT and Dodge Nitro R/T. Available on the Dodge Nitro and Dodge Nitro SLT is a 3.7-liter SOHC V-6 engine. It produces 210 hp (157 kW) @ 5,200 rpm and 235 lb.-ft. (319 N•m) @ 4,000 rpm. The Dodge Nitro R/T features a new 4.0-liter V-6 engine that delivers 255 hp (190 kW) @ 5,800 rpm and 275 lb.-ft. torque (360 N•m) @ 4,000 rpm. Standard on the Dodge Nitro R/T and optional on the Nitro SLT is a new performance suspension and 20-inch tires and chrome-clad aluminum wheels, providing performance-oriented drivers with fun-to-drive handling and a firm ride.

Three transmissions — one manual and two automatic — will be offered. The Dodge Nitro comes with a standard six-speed manual or optional four-speed automatic. The Dodge Nitro SLT has a standard four-speed automatic. The Dodge Nitro R/T has a standard five-speed automatic. All U.S. models offer 4x2 and 4x4 capability. The new mid-size SUV boasts excellent acceleration, braking, handling and towing capacity of 5,000 lbs. when properly equipped.

Standard on the Dodge Nitro SLT and Dodge Nitro R/T is a new Chrysler Group feature, the LOAD ’N GO™ cargo floor that slides 18 inches rearward for easy and convenient loading and unloading of packages, and can hold up to 400 pounds. It is made of a heavy-duty plastic for easy cleaning. A compact utility table is an available option on the Dodge Nitro model.

The Dodge Nitro also includes many standard safety features, including Electronic Stability Program, Anti-lock Brake System, Electronic Roll Mitigation and side-curtain airbags.

Available options include a DVD-based navigation system with traffic data update, rear-seat DVD entertainment system, AM/FM/6-disc/DVD/MP3 audio with premium speakers with a subwoofer, remote start, UConnect, and Sirius Satellite Radio.

“With its performance-oriented 4.0-liter engine and LOAD ’N GO cargo floor, the Dodge Nitro continues the brand’s history of creating new and game-changing products and features,” said Murphy.

There was the 1992 Dodge Viper, for example. The outrageously sculpted and brutishly powerful sports car turned heads, palpitated hearts and became the icon of the brand.

In 1994 the big-rig design of the Dodge Ram pickup truck instantly made every other pickup truck in its class boring.

And the Stow ’n Go® seating system, introduced in the 2005 model year Dodge Caravan and Chrysler Town & Country minivans, reasserted Chrysler Group’s leadership position in that market.

“Just like those innovations, the 2007 Dodge Nitro will reinvigorate its segment, the mid-size sport-utility market,” said Murphy.

Chrysler Group previously announced that the Dodge brand will expand to Europe and volume markets overseas, and the Dodge Nitro will be part of that expansion. The vehicle will be available in markets outside North America, in both left- and right-hand drive, by the first quarter of 2007.

The 2007 Dodge Nitro will be built at the Toledo (Ohio) North Assembly Plant alongside the Jeep® Liberty. Dodge Nitro will arrive in U.S. dealerships later in 2006 as a 2007 model year vehicle.

With a U.S. market share of 6.9 percent, Dodge is the fifth-largest nameplate in the United States and the eighth-largest nameplate in the automotive industry. In 2004, Dodge sold more than 1.4 million vehicles in the global market. Dodge continues to lead the minivan market segment with a 20 percent market share in the United States. In the truck market, Dodge has an 18 percent market share. In the car market, Dodge has a 4.5 percent market share. The Dodge brand will arrive in Europe and other volume markets outside of North America starting in 2006.

2007 DODGE NITRO:
DESIGNED TO IGNITE THE MID-SIZE SUV SEGMENT

• Design is Unlike Any Mid-Size SUV on the Road Today
• Functional and Flexible for People and Cargo
• Three Models — Dodge Nitro, Dodge Nitro SLT, Dodge Nitro R/T

When it came to creating the first Dodge mid-size sport-utility vehicle, Dodge designers wanted to do more than capture the spirit of the Dodge brand — they wanted to ignite the mid-size SUV segment.

They accomplished the first part of their mission by creating the all-new 2007 Dodge Nitro, an SUV with a bold, powerful, street-smart exterior design and functional and spacious interior. It’s the kind of Dodge-to-the-core design that makes part two of the mission — firing up the mid-size SUV market — just a matter of time.

“The Dodge Nitro’s bold styling and aggressive stance is what makes the vehicle stand out in a crowd,” said Trevor Creed, Senior Vice President – Chrysler Group Design. “The Nitro’s design characteristics are unlike those of any mid-size SUV on the road today, making it attractive to customers seeking distinctive style, sporty performance and cargo flexibility.”

The new SUV is based on the Dodge Nitro concept unveiled at the 2005 Chicago Auto Show and will be available in three models — Dodge Nitro, Dodge Nitro SLT and Dodge Nitro R/T.

EXTERIOR DESIGN

To achieve a distinctive, bold overall appearance unlike anything in its segment, Nitro designers introduced design elements and themes that were strong and confident. These characteristics proportion the vehicle like no other in its class — the result is the unmistakable Dodge Nitro with its purposeful, capable and assertive stance.

Intrinsic to every Dodge vehicle is the bold crosshair grille. It is just one of the many design elements that define the cool persona and tough attitude of Dodge Nitro. Body color on the Dodge Nitro R/T and chrome on the Dodge Nitro and Dodge Nitro SLT, the grille is emblazoned with a hefty three-dimensional ram’s head. Jewel-like rectangular headlamps that prominently wrap the corners of the vehicle and a clamshell hood with strong character lines complete the front-end.

The side of the vehicle features a deep-body section and high beltline which add to the vehicle’s confident appearance. Chrome vents positioned on each front fender add to the vehicle’s modern design and contemporary flair. The short front and rear overhangs, not typical of a mid-size SUV, contribute to the vehicle’s forceful expression. The wheels, pushed to the corners to further convey Nitro’s confident stance, are surrounded by bold, powerful-looking wheel arches. Standard on the Dodge Nitro R/T and optional on the Dodge Nitro SLT are 20-inch tires and chrome-clad aluminum wheels.

The side-view mirrors are designed to reflect the personality of the vehicle. They were developed in the Chrysler Group wind tunnel in Auburn Hills, Mich., in conjunction with the form of the A-pillar. The result is an aerodynamically efficient design that minimizes wind noise, helping to create a quieter cabin.

The vehicle’s door handles have a solid, strong feel and are easy to grip, even with a gloved hand. In the center of the door handle is a deep, horizontal groove, a design cue that is repeated inside on the map pocket, door panels and instrument panel.

Dodge designers chose to black-out the C-pillar of the vehicle which makes the second-row and rear-windows appear more horizontal, amplifying the vehicle’s sporty nature.

The rear of the vehicle, consistent and balanced with the overall design, features beveled taillamps and a lighted license visor.

The Dodge Nitro is designed to help expand the Dodge brand’s presence in markets outside North America. The front fascia, headlamps, rear fascia and taillamps are designed to meet international requirements.

INTERIOR DESIGN

The interior of the five-passenger Dodge Nitro is spacious, functional and flexible for people and cargo. The headliner is shrink-wrapped to allow maximum headroom and there is plenty of leg room for first- and second-row passengers.

A three-pod, four-gauge instrument cluster is designed for right- or left-hand drive. The chunky steering wheel gives the driver a perception and feeling of a bigger vehicle.

Brushed silver accents appear on the door handles, center console, gear shift and HVAC controls. The Dodge Nitro SLT and Dodge Nitro R/T receive additional chrome detail on the steering wheel, instrument cluster, first-row grab handle and center console. The gear shifter and control buttons are substantial in size and bold by design.

Storage space is maximized throughout the vehicle. The center console storage bin is deep and wide enough to house CDs or DVDs and has a tray that sits atop it for additional storage. The center console offers three spaces that can accommodate hand-held PDAs, cell phones or coins. The driver- and passenger-side doors each have deep compartments; behind the driver’s seat is a wide and easy-to-reach map pocket. Two cup-holders are located in the first and second rows of the vehicle.

The Dodge Nitro features a new seat structure which is firm and robust, perfect for long road trips. A choice of vinyl or cloth seats is also available on the Dodge Nitro model. Leather seats are available on the Dodge Nitro R/T and SLT models.

Standard on the Dodge Nitro SLT is the new YES Essentials® cloth seats, and advanced seating upholstery that offers Chrysler Group’s customers three key benefits: repelling stains, controlling odor and reducing static electricity. The fabric technology is designed to withstand endless cleanings — even repeatedly in the same location — and will not rub off or change the texture or comfort of the seats or surfaces during ownership of the vehicle. The upholstery also controls bacteria-based odors inside the vehicle.

The Dodge Nitro has a fold-flat front passenger seat, as well as fold-flat second-row seats. The second-row seats also recline for added passenger comfort. Standard on the Dodge Nitro SLT and Dodge Nitro R/T is the LOAD ’N GO™ cargo floor which slides 18 inches rearward for easy and convenient loading and unloading of packages. The LOAD ’N GO cargo floor can hold up to 400 pounds and is made of a heavy-duty plastic for easy cleaning. Standard on the Dodge Nitro model is a reversible load floor, and a compact utility table is optional.

The Dodge Nitro features two new exterior colors — Sunburst Orange and Electric Blue. Also available will be Inferno Red, Light Khaki, Bright Silver, Black and Stone White.

THE ALL-NEW 2007 DODGE NITRO:
ENGINEERED FOR PERFORMANCE, POWER AND HANDLING

• Two V-6 Engine Offerings — 4.0-Liter and 3.7-Liter
• All-New Independent Front, Five-Link Rear, and Performance Suspensions
• Excellent Acceleration, Braking, Handling and Towing

In a world of mostly bland SUVs, the 2007 Dodge Nitro has the engineering and performance needed to ignite the mid-size SUV market. The new mid-size SUV boasts excellent acceleration, braking, handling and towing (5,000 lbs.).

There are three models — Dodge Nitro, Dodge Nitro SLT and Dodge Nitro R/T. All three U.S. models offer 4x2 and 4x4 capability. And, for those looking for sportier handling, a new performance suspension is standard on the Dodge Nitro R/T and is an available option on the Nitro SLT.

“The Dodge Nitro R/T with the 4.0-liter SOHC V-6 engine, performance suspension and 20-inch tires and wheels redefines the mid-size SUV driving experience,” said Craig Love, Vice President – Rear-wheel-drive Product Team and RWD Core Team Leader. “Whether customers are looking for sporty performance or dynamic ride and handling, the all-new 2007 Dodge Nitro delivers.”

TWO POWER-PACKED ENGINES

4.0-LITER SOHC V-6

The performance-oriented 4.0-liter SOHC V-6 engine is designed to provide the power and torque required to make the Dodge Nitro a leader in the mid-size SUV segment. The 4.0-liter SOHC V-6 engine delivers 255 hp (190 kW) @ 5,800 rpm and 275 lb.-ft. torque (360 N•m) @ 4,000 rpm. It is an enhanced version of the 3.5-liter engine used in prior Chrysler Group vehicles. The engine provides more power and torque than the prior 3.5-liter with emphasis on low- and mid-range operation to meet the needs of the day-to-day driver. It also incorporates a number of refinement features to make it one of the quietest engines of its size in the market.

The 4.0-liter engine is standard on the Dodge Nitro R/T model.

3.7-LITER SOHC V-6

The 3.7-liter SOHC V-6 engine provides the 2007 Dodge Nitro with a standard engine that is efficient, durable and smooth. It produces 210 hp (157 kW) @ 5,200 rpm and 235 lb.-ft. (319 N•m) @ 4,000 rpm. Refinements in the valve train and combustion chamber, working together as a system, enhance low-speed torque while providing a smooth idle and minimal engine noise. A sophisticated Electronic Throttle Control (ETC) system tailors throttle response to pedal movement based on operating conditions, and maintains a consistent vehicle speed on rolling grades when cruise control is active.

The 3.7-liter V-6 is standard on the Dodge Nitro and Dodge Nitro SLT models.

For key diesel markets outside North America, the Dodge Nitro will be offered with a diesel engine in 2007.

ALL-NEW SUSPENSION SYSTEM DELIVERS SPORTY PERFORMANCE AND DYNAMIC HANDLING

The Dodge Nitro features an all-new independent front suspension and an all-new five-link rear suspension. The independent front suspension gives the driver an optimum combination of ride, handling and steering, providing a greater sense of control and precision. The solid five-link rear suspension, including upper and lower trailing links and track bar, provides higher lateral stiffness for vehicle responsiveness and outstanding handling. Ample suspension wheel travel is provided to maintain consistent ride quality, especially when the vehicle is loaded or towing a trailer.

Performance-oriented drivers will want the new performance suspension offered on the Dodge Nitro R/T and SLT models. Here the emphasis is on responsive, fun-to-drive handling accompanied by a firm ride. This system features a revised sway bar, springs, shocks, bushings and 20-inch tires and wheels for improved cornering and increased traction.

Effort, feel and response on the Nitro’s rack-and-pinion steering system is tuned to give the driver precise control and positive feedback from the steering force exerted by the tires. The steering linkage design allows for a tighter turning circle.

TRANSMISSIONS OFFER QUIETNESS AND HIGH QUALITY

Three transmissions are offered on the Dodge Nitro: a six-speed manual transmission, a four-speed automatic and a five-speed automatic.

The six-speed manual transmission is standard on the Dodge Nitro 4x2 and 4x4 models with the 3.7-liter V-6 engine. It provides optimal shift quality, improved quietness and high quality. For smooth operation, first and second gears have triple-cone synchronization, the third and fourth gears feature double-cone and the fifth and sixth gears single-cone synchronization. Hard-finished gears allow for quiet operation. A multi-rail, steel-construction shift system delivers high strength and precision. The two-piece aluminum case with integrated clutch housing assures powertrain stiffness and low weight. The new first-gear ratios combined with six-speed step spread allows optimization of axle ratios for fuel economy and performance.

Transmission ratios for the six-speed manual are:

1st 4.46 4th 1.25 Reverse 4.06
2nd 2.61 5th 1.0
3rd 1.72 6th 0.84

The four-speed automatic transmission is optional on the Dodge Nitro and standard on the Dodge Nitro SLT. Line pressure within the transmission is based on demand for improved fuel efficiency.

Transmission ratios for the four-speed automatic are:

1st 2.84 3rd 1.0 Reverse 2.21
2nd 1.57 4th 0.69

The five-speed automatic transmission is mated to the 4.0-liter V-6 engine. The five-speed transmission features Electronic Range Select (ERS) driver interactive shift control. The shifter provides fully-automated shifting when in the Drive position, or the driver can manually select each gear by simply moving the shifter left and right from the Drive position. This gives the driver control to precisely match any on-road driving requirement.

Transmission ratios for the five-speed automatic are:

1st 3.59 3rd 1.41 5th 0.83
2nd 2.19 4th 1.0 Reverse 3.16

PART-TIME AND FULL-TIME FOUR-WHEEL DRIVE SYSTEMS

The Dodge Nitro 4x4 features a standard part-time four-wheel drive system with the manual transmission and a full-time all-wheel drive system with automatic transmissions.

Two-wheel drive and all-wheel drive modes are electronically controlled by a switch in the center console which can be selected at any time with the part-time four-wheel drive system. The full-time all-wheel drive system does not have a 2WD mode and has no console switch.

EXCELLENT BRAKING CAPABILITY

Four-wheel disc anti-lock brakes are standard on the Dodge Nitro. The vehicle’s larger rotors contribute to its excellent stopping and handling capability. Front rotors have inverted hat construction (vent openings are on the outboard side of the rotor) to improve cooling compared to conventional inboard venting. This also helps to minimize high-temperature deformation for long-term smooth operation.

A Brake Traction Control System (BTCS) is standard on the Dodge Nitro. BTCS transfers torque from one wheel to another on the same axle when wheel slip conditions are detected.

Also standard on the Dodge Nitro is the Electronic Stability Program (ESP) which aids the driver in maintaining vehicle directional stability in severe driving maneuvers on any type of surface. Using signals from sensors throughout the vehicle, ESP determines the appropriate brake and throttle adjustments for directional stability of the vehicle.

The Dodge Nitro also includes many standard safety features, including Anti-lock Brake System, Electronic Roll Mitigation and side-curtain airbags.

The 2007 Dodge Nitro will be produced at the Toledo (Ohio) North Assembly Plant.

Inside Line: 2007 Dodge Nitro

2007 Dodge Nitro Midsize SUV
Available: October 2006

What Edmunds.com Says:The good looking Nitro leaves the dirt to the import SUVs and focuses on the street, a smart move that should pay off.

What We Know: Dodge calls the 2007 Nitro its first midsize SUV, but when you look at the numbers they don't add up: a 5,000-pound maximum towing capacity, just over 65 cubic feet of maximum cargo and a base V6 with only 210 horsepower. Those aren't midsize numbers. The fact is the Nitro isn't a midsize, it's a compact SUV. Dodge probably thinks "compact" sounds too feminine for an SUV geared to attract more men than women so it's sticking with midsize. The company needn't worry, the Nitro's styling and hardware speak for itself. Although it's built on the same platform as the Jeep Liberty, the Nitro was engineered primarily for street use. Four-wheel drive will be an option, but there's no low-range gearing or big off-road tires. In fact, the top-of-the-line R/T model comes standard with 20-inch wheels and low-profile 50-series tires. They're part of the R/T's standard performance-suspension package, which includes revised springs, shocks, bushings and sway bars. Like the Liberty, the Nitro uses a solid-axle-rear/independent-front suspension configuration, but the Nitro's rack and pinion steering was tuned for quicker response and better road feel. The Nitro offers two solid V6s. Base and SLT models get a 3.7-liter with 210 horsepower and 235 pound-feet of torque, while the R/T gets a 4.0-liter six with 255 hp and 275 lb-ft of torque. There are three transmissions: a six-speed manual which comes standard in the base model, a four-speed automatic (standard in the midlevel SLT and optional in the base Nitro), and a five-speed automatic which only comes with the R/T's 4.0-liter V6. On base models equipped with the manual, choosing four-wheel drive means an electronically controlled part-time system while all automatics use a full-time four-wheel-drive system that splits power 40/60 front-to-rear. At 178 inches, the Nitro is about 4 inches longer than the Jeep Liberty and 10 inches shorter than Chevrolet's Equinox. Rear legroom in the Nitro is slightly better than the Liberty, but still falls short of the Chevy by a couple of inches. A new Load and Go system — standard on SLT and R/T models — slides in and out of the cargo area for easier loading of the 32 cubic feet of space behind the rear seats. The Nitro will offer premium features like a rear-seat DVD entertainment system, remote start, DVD navigation and a premium sound system. Standard safety equipment includes electronic stability control, side curtain airbags and electronic roll mitigation.

WOW, did not see these numbers posted for the reduction of options offered on the 2008 Nitro. Would anyone have thought 167,000?

Ford is not alone in its quest to save money and keep things simple, DaimlerChrysler AG's Chrysler Group has also recently announced a similar plan which featured cutting options available on the Dodge Nitro from 167,000 to just 650. They also plan similar reductions on other vehicles.

These drastic changes reflect what we've known for some time now: the American auto manufacturing market is suffering.

Nitro more urban warrior than gnarly off-roader

Warning: If you're a new Dodge Nitro enthusiast, stop reading now.

The fact of the matter is I didn't like the looks of it from the first time I spotted one. My guilty pleasure is boxy vehicles -- I adore the optimistic-looking, only-in-the-U.S. Scion xB and the Mercedes-Benz/Dodge Sprinter. But the Nitro, well, it just doesn't rub me the right away.

In all fairness, I'm not the target demographic for the "loaded with adrenaline" Nitro. According to Dodge, the focus is men who, among other passions, have a "man den in the basement or garage" and "women seeking a masculine mid-sized SUV."

The Nitro is being advertised on such TV shows as Desperate Housewives and Crossing Jordan. You'll also see ads in Martha Stewart's Blueprint and on the HGTV website. Curious. I'd categorize my girly girlfriends as the spectators for the above entertainment, and they didn't like the looks of the Nitro either.

Failing to find any fans of the Nitro among my gal pals, I cross-examined my boyfriend, Neil. Though he doesn't have a man den, he'd like one -- living in a condo, however, means we've neither a basement nor a garage. He's also a cool guy's guy, with lots of DeWalt power tools.

"What kind of truck is this? It drives like a Jeep, looks like an SUV, and makes me think it's the evil twin of the Commander and the big dumb brother of the Caliber," says Neil. "I'd say they got inspiration from the Honda Element, but instead of making it cute, they punched it in the face -- and voila!"

Moving inside -- once you get past the retro push-button door handles -- Neil likes the rugged feel "and the interior plastic and rubber seem designed for wear and tear. It's meant to get dirty." At 6-foot-3 -- and with equally long arms -- the guy still found it to be a stretch for the climate controls.

The tall should mind their heads. "Every time I go over a bump, I feel like I'm going to get a lobotomy. And every time I get in or out, I hit my head on the door frame," says Neil. Another point: "For a big truck, it has small windows. God forbid if anyone needs to make an emergency evacuation through them."

There is, however, a ton of legroom behind the front row -- even when the front seat's in a recline position. Seat comfort gets a low score. As a 5-foot-8 driver, I couldn't find the ideal position to grab the wheel and reach the pedals, having to compromise between the two. Though there are some power controls to slide your seat forward or aft, the back position is adjusted manually. I also wouldn't want to sit in either the driver's or passenger's seat for more than a few hours -- there's not much support.

The steering wheel, instrument panel and centre stack -- with audio and climate controls -- are all generic. The bold and aggressive exterior doesn't match the low-key insides. The dash is stunted -- it's so short that it's hard to find a place to display a parking pass.

There's a good amount of cargo space and the innovative, handy Load 'N Go floor -- a platform that holds 182 kilograms of stuff and slides out for easy loading.

From the throaty sound that comes from the exhaust to the acceleration, ride and handling, the Nitro's driving dynamics are positively truck-like.

Though the Nitro isn't my (or Neil's) favourite ride, Dodge gets an ovation for at least focusing its lineup. Over the past decade, its vehicles have moved from hiding under the Chrysler wing to making bold statements. For those who want aggressive styling and fair pricing, Dodge is carving out its own little niche.

awd or 4wd

hey everyone. Im not sure if anyone can be of assistance but i have ordered a nitro sxt as the model is labelled in aus. The dealer said the vehicle is awd now i have read in a few forums that it is in fact 2wd or switched to 4wd high ratio. I know there isnt a huge difference but i would like to know. As far as i am aware the sxt has many of the nitro rt's suspension and running gear. But no one at the dealership can make it any clearer. And help would be greatly appreciated...

Nitro can go off road but may be too stylish

Nitro can go off road but may be too stylish
By Gregory J. Wilcox
Staff Writer

The 2007 Dodge Nitro looks buff enough on the outside for some serious off-roading and is a pussycat on the inside.

I don't know how well-suited for the former the Nitro is because I certainly would not want to get in the dirt with the 20-inch chrome wheels that are standard on the model we tested.

And I sure wouldn't want to scuff up the eye-catching Inferno Red Crystal Pearl Coat, either.

This is a midsized SUV, a first for Dodge, that's probably best suited for navigating the suspension-rattling potholes endemic to Los Angeles.

There is also enough road clearance for fording those temporary winter streams some of our roads and streets become.

And with its flared fenders and high-line styling cues (think a scaled down Hummer or Land Rover), this midsized SUV makes a stylish statement.

New for 2007, the truck shares Jeep's lineage, which shouldn't be surprising.

"The 2007 Dodge Nitro is going to heat up the midsize SUV market by giving consumers a quality vehicle with masculine good looks, exceptional performance, unsurpassed utility and features that will surprise and delight," said a statement from George Murphy, senior vice president of global marketing for Chrysler Group.

It's too soon to address the quality issue.

But it looks as though the Nitro could live up to some of those other boasts.

It's definitely an eye-pleasing, macho ride.

Dodge attributes the masculine appearance to a number of elements.

They include the signature Dodge crosshair grille with its three-dimensional ram's head, those prominent fender flares and good body size.

The latter is not overdone, and I could park the Dodge in the family garage without rearranging any of the clutter. (I couldn't do that with several other test vehicles.)

These design elements even carry over to the mirrors and door handles.

Designers also pushed the Nitro's wheels to the corners. This reinforces performance and off-highway capabilities.

Drive Time had the R/T 4x4 model with a 4.0 liter, V6 single overhead cam engine.

It definitely provides lots of pep and seemed to want to jump away from stoplights and stop signs.

There is lots of space inside, too. The rear seats fold down in 60/40 fashion.

The leather trimmed seats are comfortable and the cabin featured a six-speaker sound system with a subwoofer and rear seat video system and a gaming system.

Nitro features a thick, comfortable four-spoke, leather-wrapped steering wheel and the dash has a three-pod, four-gauge instrument panel.

These are black with gray and white graphics and orange pointers.

There are many places for stuff, too.

The center console has room for hand-held PDAs, cell phones or coins; there are driver- and passenger-side door compartments; and a map pocket behind the driver's seat.

What Dodge calls the Load 'N Go floor is also new, and you wonder why somebody didn't think of it before.

It's a sliding rear floor panel that holds up to 400 pounds and makes loading and unloading cargo an easier task.

The leather-trimmed seats are comfortable and the cabin also featured a six-speaker sound system with a subwoofer and rear seat video system and a gaming system.

In addition to Dodge Nitro R/T, the two other models offered in the U.S. are the Dodge Nitro SXT and Dodge Nitro SLT.

And this is a fairly affordable ride.

"What might end up surprising people and finally sealing the deal is that it's a great truck to drive, particularly in an urban setting; that it sports a stylish, roomy and comfortable interior; and that it blows most of the competition away when it comes to power-to-price ratio," concluded the Web site Automobile.com.

Drive Time agrees.

Dodge’s mid-size Nitro SUV delivers aggressive styling

May 10, 2008

The Dodge Nitro makes the loudest statement in the mid-size SUV segment thanks to its brawny, in-your-face styling. Now in its second year of production, the Nitro tops my list in terms of best-dressed.

Nitro’s wheels, which are pushed to the corners, are nicely accented by tastefully prominent fender flares. Nitro’s high beltline reminds me of the popular Dodge Charger. And of course, up front, Nitro sports an impressive, masculine crosshair grille flanked by bold, rectangular headlamp assemblies.

Looking at the Dodge Nitro, it’s difficult to tell that its platform comes from a modified version of the Jeep Liberty. The Liberty and Nitro look like they came from different worlds. The Liberty stands tall while Nitro looks hunkered down and ready to pounce.

The Nitro is obviously not Dodge’s version of the Liberty. It’s a totally different vehicle. The Liberty is a true off-roader while the Nitro is built for the street. There isn’t anything on the road that looks like the Nitro, especially when ordered in R/T trim with 20-inch chrome-clad wheels.

That is Totally Awesome

Well that is totally cool thing that we both know the difference between the two. The Nitro is obviously not Dodge’s version of the Liberty. It’s a totally different vehicle. The Liberty is a true off-roader while the Nitro is built for the street. They are totally different unlike what my friend tell and keep on arguing with that vehicle.

A Look At The Dodge Nitro

Autumn 2008

Both drivers and critics consider the Dodge Nitro one of the toughest vehicles in its class. It is considered as rugged as it is practical and as fun to drive as it is smooth. The Dodge Nitro can seat up to five occupants and drives like a dream thanks to a 4.0 liter V-6 engine.

Outwardly, as mentioned, the Dodge Nitro looks like a powerful, aggressive SUV. Its silhouette is boxy enough to tell everyone on the road that it means business, and both the front and read fenders flare stylishly. Depending on the model, the grille is either silver and placed almost vertically or body colored with a crosshair design.

The Dodge Nitro features an independent front and a solid rear axle suspension system in both the sport and performance models. The performance suspension includes improvements with the stabilizer bars, coil springs, shocks, and bushings, and it is standard with the R/T model.

Due to the suspension, the ride in a Dodge Nitro is firm but completely smooth. It is made even better by the driver’s view which, thanks to a high seating position, is wide open and clear. In the Dodge Nitro R/T, the steering wheel is wrapped in thick leather – and it features an exquisitely light touch, thanks to rack and pinion steering.

Drivers of this SUV have the option of two engines: the 4.0 liter V-6 engine is standard with R/T models and it, too, is responsible for the Nitro’s satin smooth ride, especially with its five speed automatic transmission; the other option is a 3.7 liter V-6, with either six speed manual transmission or a four speed automatic.

Drivers can also choose between rear wheel and four wheel drive, as well as two 4×4 systems. Anti lock brakes are standard as well – stopping is smooth and precise.

Where the exterior is rugged and aggressive, the interior of the Dodge Nitro is classic and austere. There is a cluster of three pod gauges on top of the dashboard, which slopes sharply. The Nitro SXT, the base model, features black accents, whereas the SLT and the R/T models are accented in silver trim around the centre dash, the door handles, the door armrests, and within the centre console. Other standard features include manual air conditioning, a 115 voltage power outlet, and a CD equipped stereo.

The Dodge Nitro has room to seat up to five occupants. The driver and passenger seats are bucket seats, conducive to extreme comfort, support, and stability during long drives. In back, there is a folding seat which can be split and folded down in sixty/forty fashion. The rear seats’ backrests are able to recline, which also allows for supreme comfort during longer trips. The standard seating upholstery is soft cloth, but there are also options for stain resistant fabric and leather trimmed upholstery.

In addition to being supportive, the Dodge Nitro’s bucket seats are marvelously plush, especially the leather trimmed seats. Both the front seats and the seats in the rear are plentiful when it comes to room – not only is there room for five occupants, there is actual personal space for them as well.
The Dodge Nitro received five stars for safety from the National Highway Traffic Safety administration. Standard safety features include side curtain air bags and an electronic stability system.

This 4×4 vehicle has over thirty cubic feet of storage room behind the back seats when they are upright. When the rear seats are folded, there is over sixty five cubic feet of cargo room. The SXT models feature a reversible floor in the cargo area, which has a bracing tray on one side meant to keep messes in one place, should they occur. Dodge Nitro SLT and R/T models feature the Load ‘n Go floor, which slides out of the storage region up to eighteen inches, so that it acts like a ramp for loading cargo. In both cases, storage bins are hidden beneath the floors.

2007 Dodge Nitro First Drive Giving SUVs a little Grrrrrr

Introduction

Dodge Nitro – 2007 First Drive: You know the commercial: Some sad sack guy in a non-descript car gets a jump – literally – from a shiny red Dodge Nitro. Hmmm...not sure how it is that the 260-horsepower engine in the Nitro R/T blows a car off its tires, but hey, that's creative license for ya, a liberty Dodge designers also took when penning the Nitro's blocky look and robust fender flares. We only wish they had managed to work in more power as well. Based on the Jeep Liberty and showcasing some new features, the Nitro has powerful, over-the-top looks and a very livable interior, if only for five and for those willing to pay for the more expensive models.
Origins

As the first compact SUV in the Dodge lineup since the 1990 Raider, the Nitro is based on the Jeep Liberty. Call it a Liberty that's been liberated. Sure, the Nitro is built on the same platform and in the same Toledo, Ohio, plant as the Jeep Liberty, and boasts some of the features we'll see in the 2008 Liberty model. But this is a significantly different design, plus a reworking of the suspension and powertrain. Should the Liberty come out with the Nitro's 4.0-liter V6 engine and some of its interior upgrades, it will be much improved. Here's hoping that parent company Chrysler sees fit to equip both with its new six-speed automatic transmission.
Pricing

Typical of most Dodge vehicles, the Nitro comes in three flavors, starting with the base SXT ($19,885), SLT ($23,295) and R/T ($25,970). All prices include $660 destination; four-wheel drive is $1,510 extra. Significant option prices include $1,700 for MyGIG, Chrysler's new 20-gig personal infotainment system, $1,200 for a rear-seat DVD player and $730 for R/T special leather seats.

Dodge Nitro is ‘Tonka’ for adults

Dodge Nitro is ‘Tonka’ for adults

Wednesday, 10 December 2008

From North Dublin Publications

WHAT kind of a car do you want to drive? Something that will start first time these winter mornings and blend in with the commuter traffic? Or maybe you would like to make a fashion statement and buy a Dodge Nitro.
Last week I drove a red version of the massive Dodge Nitro and I must say it drew as many envious glances from young and old as any sports car I have driven.

The front of the Nitro reminded me of the front of one of those massive trucks which traverse the US roads, the ones you see in ads at Christmas time, transporting Budweiser.

That front grille just has to be seen to be believed and it really defines this SUV.

It definitely is huge in every aspect and you could literally stand or indeed sit on the front bumper. Some people have described it as a 'Tonka Toy' for adults and viewed side on, it has a kind of a Hummer look to it.
Dodge is back in Ireland after an absence of more than 50 years. They describe the styling in the Nitro as 'masculine' and to be fair I don't think they will attract many female drivers.

Naturally it's set high and you wouldn't want to be troubled by arthritis to climb on board. Once inside it's very spacious and views are impressive, even though the side windows are fairly small.
For the driver and front seat passenger there is a lot of bonnet in your line of vision, but the SUV is easy to handle.

You get six forward gears and the ride is reasonably smooth. I found the handbrake is a bit far away from the driver. In fact it's so far away it would be better to get the front seat passenger to use it.

However, I liked the way the lights come on when you turn off the alarm with the zapper at night. It makes it easier and safer to find your way to the Nitro. It's a long motor and the reversing parking sensors are handy.
As the Nitro is likely to be used for agricultural work there is a host of safety items as standard on this 4x4. You get ABS, ESP and a new one for me, ERM, which means Electronic Rollover Mitigation.

Officially it's a five-seater, but the back seat and passenger seat can be folded flat for more storage if necessary. There is also a sliding boot floor which extends from the boot and could be used to load heavy items or simply to sit on if you are having a picnic.

The 2.8 manual version I drove costs e37,995, while you will pay e39,495 for the automatic version. The road tax is a whopping e2,000. If you are interested in a commercial version the manual is e28,995 and the automatic e30,495.

Hard to know exactly who will buy this SUV as we enter a recessionary era and I suppose you would have to worry about its re-sale value when the time comes to trade in.

But to be fair I have driven more expensive and thirstier SUVs. Perhaps Yanks or maybe Irish people who have lived in the US for a long period, may be attracted to it.

First Nitro Review of 2009

Nitro offers utility, value pricing

January 9, 2009

Thank goodness it snowed. Otherwise this would have been a very harsh review.

You see, the 2009 Dodge Nitro is just not made for someone as petite as I am, and my overall comfort in the driver’s seat is dismal. So, I was having a really bad week during the test period.

Then it snowed.

The test vehicle had part-time four-wheel drive, and during I had been keeping it in two-wheel drive mode. In the middle of a severe pummeling of snow and ice, I tried to make it up my driveway in 2WD … and slid right back down. So, I switched it over to 4WD and tried again. The Nitro took the incline with minimal effort.

Even better, the as-tested price of the base Nitro SE 4X4 test vehicle was $25,650. And that was after the addition of the Customer Preferred Package ($1,305).

The Nitro has three different trim levels – SE, SLT and R/T – all of which have 2WD and 4WD availability. At a base level, the SE starts at $22,685 (2WD) and has some nice standard features such as electronic stability control, all-speed traction control, a tire pressure monitoring system, first- and second-row side airbags, reclining rear seats and a reversible cargo tray. The SLT trim level adds about $2,500 to the bottom line as well as the Load-N-Go cargo floor, six-way power adjustable driver’s seat, steering wheel audio controls and chrome interior accents. The R/T model jumps up to $28,180 (2WD) and adds a 4.0-liter V-6 engine, five-speed automatic transmission, 20-inch performance tires and the R/T logo on front seats with stitching.

The Nitro has two engine options, a 3.7-liter V-6 and a 4.0-liter V-6. The 3.7 is standard on the SE and SLT models and delivers 210 horsepower and 235 pound-feet of torque at 4,000 rpm. The up-level 4.0-liter engine is only available on the R/T model and produces 260 horsepower and 265 pound-feet of torque at 4,200 rpm.

The 3.7-liter engine is mated to a four-speed automatic transmission, while the 4.0-liter is mated to a five speed transmission. That helps explain why fuel estimates stay pretty close between the engines even though there’s a huge leap in horsepower. The 3.7 gets EPA estimated mileage of 15 mpg in the city and 21 mpg on the highway for the 4WD model while the 4.0 gets 15 mpg in the city and 20 mpg on the highway.

Since the test vehicle was at the base SE level, it had the 3.7-liter engine, and it actually performed very well. I didn’t feel like power was at all sluggish, and the Nitro test vehicle moved pretty well for a 4,132-pound vehicle.

While the Nitro shines in inclement weather, I have to say this is one of my least favorite vehicles in every-day driving. The ride is incredibly stiff and rough, and you will feel every single one of those Chicago potholes you encounter. The bright spot here: Turning radius is decent.

As I alluded in the beginning, my driving position in the Nitro stunk. I don’t know what it is about Dodge, Chrysler and Jeep vehicles, but I have a difficult time getting a comfortable position. When I pump my seat up for good visibility out the front, my knees bump the underbelly of the dash. I also felt way too close to the steering wheel in my far-forward position. All of this made me feel trapped, and getting in and out of the vehicle was a chore because I had to shimmy out sideways.

Then, to top it all off, when I got the seat high enough for good visibility, my feet didn’t touch the floor. Talk about an Edith Ann moment.

One area where the Nitro really shines is in exterior design. The boxy shape is one of those that you’ll either love or hate, but I think Dodge did a really nice job with this one. I like the strong masculine lines and bold upright grille. The bumpers and fenders are a bit blocky, but they somehow work on the Nitro.

Interior styling, however, could use a little bit of a lift. The behind-the-wheel gauges are flat and boring. Not to mention the fact that the center stack is downright sterile. Since the vehicle makes such a statement on the outside, I’d like to see some of that trickle into the cabin, but the only swath of character I saw was the gearshift knob. On the plus side, because the center stack is so plain, all the dials and controls are easy to find and operate.

The Nitro was new to the scene in 2007, and it hasn’t gotten any massive upgrades for 2009. Some new things you’ll see include standard floor mats on all models, auto unlock at exit, rear dome lamp and a Deep Water Blue Pearl coat that replaces the Modern Blue Pearl Coat.

While I didn’t necessarily like the Nitro for myself, I can’t altogether pooh-pooh it. There is a lot to recommend it … if you’re not around 5-feet tall. Four-wheel drive at a decent price can be hard to come by. And when you combine that with the bold, unique styling and SUV utility, well, that’s worth a second look.

2011 Dodge Nitro: High on Image

Assault on conformity (Philippines)

Thursday, 26 March 2009

DRIVE LOUD AND LOOK THE PART No matter the view, the Dodge Nitro’s shape calls attention in a big way, whether it’s the hot-rod look, the aggressive fender flares or the 20-inch chrome rims.

IN the Metro Manila concrete jungle, the norm is to follow the status quo of conformity. But if you’re the type that goes against the flow, the best way to attack the status quo (from an auto owner’s viewpoint) is to drive a vehicle that calls attention to one’s self in more ways than one—like the Dodge Nitro.

Let’s start with the exterior. It’s the proportions that get the attention and, ultimately, make the SUV stand out. The high beltline (with huge 20-inch wheels) and a wide stance covered by aggressive flares are impossible to ignore, even if you don’t like SUVs. The monochromatic rust orange paint on the test unit doesn’t hurt either. And don’t forget the fake vents on the Nitro’s front-quarter panels, which look disturbingly similar to the vents on the Range Rover Sport.

But it takes more than jaw-dropping looks to compete. You’ve got to be all things to all people, to be big enough to haul the family and its accessories and small enough to not punch a truck-sized hole in the wind. The Nitro answers the call, but for some reason doesn’t go all out. The front seats are comfortable (read: soft) and provide an upright driving position, but feel a little bit like they’re inflatable until you adjust to sitting on them rather than in them. Rear-seat legroom is sufficient for adults, while radio and aircon controls are all logically placed and easy to use via large knobs. Instrumentation is arranged logically in three binnacles, with the speedometer in the center, tachometer on the right and fuel and temperature gauges on the left. Other controls, specifically the hard-to-find hazard button (under the aircon controls) and the emergency brake handle, don’t feel designed for human use. The latter is too thin; grabbing it is like grabbing a knife handle. The rest of the interior materials, especially the hard plastic on the dash and in the cargo area, is abundant and looks a little cheap. There are, however, plenty of small bins and storage areas.

Speaking of storage, its 60/40-split rear seat folds flat (as does the front passenger seat) providing great space for long items. The rear hatch is easy to reach, even for the vertically challenged. There’s a sliding cargo tray (billed as Load ‘N Go) behind the rear seat that extends over the rear bumper and can accommodate 400 pounds. However, the tray is only semi-useful; its versatility could be greatly increased with the ability to slide out another 10 inches, even if it means cutting its capacity in half.

The 3.7L V6 takes some time to get into the powerband’s low end. Then again, that’s hardly surprising given the 1867 kg curb weight (and the additional unsprung weight of people and items) that the engine has to move. But when the Nitro has momentum it can go mighty fast, going up to 200 kph. The bad news? Hauling all that mass puts a strain on fuel consumption (6.41 km/l, four days mixed driving), and the four-speed A/T has a tendency to upshift too early, which affects acceleration.

Given the looks of the unit, handling isn’t a strong point. Its front suspension is under-damped, which allows excessive body motion over bumps and freeway undulations. It may be good for US highways, but for the near off-road conditions of Metro Manila tarmac, the damping raises concerns. Timid suspension tuning aside, the Nitro’s aggressive stability control system reins hard cornering heavily, holding traction up to 83 to 85 kph. Also, its steering is slow and doesn’t offer much feedback.

Much like its handling aspect, safety is also middling. Brake grip is strong, but handbrake grip is very weak. You have to pull up the latter close to 45 degrees to get decent bite. There are parking sensors at the rear but none in front, and with the small side mirrors parallel parking can be tricky. The low roofline also creates blind spots at the rear.

The Dodge Nitro may be lacking in certain areas, but it certainly isn’t found wanting in making itself (and its owner) known throughout the metro. In short, it’s the perfect assault on conformity.
