Jeep Grand Wagoneer Trackhawk Could be on the Way

Jul 17, 2018

A Jeep Grand Wagoneer Trackhawk could be a possibility. We’re not kidding.

Road & Track recently dug up an internal document from German automotive supplier ZF, which designs and manufactures transmissions for multiple automakers. The document listed numerous vehicles that will use the automaker’s 8HP eight-speed automatic transmission. Among them was the upcoming Jeep Grand Wagoneer – a large, three-row SUV that Fiat Chrysler is suspected to have had in the works for a couple of years. The document didn’t list the name of just any Grand Wagoneer, though. It listed the ‘Jeep Grand Wagoneer Trackhawk’.

According to the document, Jeep Grand Wagoneer Trackhawk will use a 717 hp version of FCA’s 6.2-liter supercharged Hellcat V8, which is close to the 718 hp the updated 2019 Dodge Challenger Hellcat makes. The engine will be paired with its ZF-8HP95X transmission, a version of the ZF eight-speed designed for high torque applications. If the document is to be trusted, then Jeep is indeed working on a three-row Jeep Grand Wagoneer Trackhawk packing nearly the same powertrain as the 2019 Challenger Hellcat. Whoa.

R&T notes that the appearance of the Jeep Grand Wagoneer Trackhawk in the document doesn’t necessarily mean a Grand Wagoneer Trackhawk will see the light of day. It could be a prototype constructed for testing purposes, or a ZF employee could have meant to type ‘Grand Cherokee Trackhawk’ instead of ‘Grand Wagoneer Trackhawk’ – although Jeep hasn’t said the Grand Cherokee Trackhawk will get the upgraded 717 hp Hellcat engine. A Jeep spokesperson also denied having any knowledge of a Jeep Grand Wagoneer Trackhawk when asked for comment by R&T.

We’ll have to wait and see what Jeep has in store for its upcoming three-row SUV to know whether or not the ZF document is accurate. We remain confident, though. FCA is just crazy enough to actually make a product like this. After all, this is the company that built the insane Charger and Challenger Hellcat, then promptly outdid themselves with the Grand Cherokee Trackhawk and Challenger Demon.
