The Obama administration said today it would set aside $50 million in federal stimulus money for worker retraining in communities hit by auto industry layoffs, The Detroit News reported.
The announcement came in Ohio, where Ed Montgomery, the administration’s point person for recovery in auto communities, was meeting with state officials, the paper said. Montgomery is scheduled to make his third visit to Michigan next week, the News reported.
The money will be available to communities that are home to auto manufacturers or suppliers and that have experienced significant layoffs, the paper said. It is the first segment of federal stimulus dollars specifically set aside for auto communities. The White House said details on how and when communities can apply for the aid will be available next month, the story said. (The Detroit News)
