SAE Congress: Modified Chrysler Tigershark 2.0 engine previews E85-capable 2014 Dart

04/19/2013

On the floor at the SAE World Congress at Cobo Hall this week sits a 2.0-liter Tigershark engine. Parts have been cut away and there are pretty colored lights inside, but the cool part – if you're interested in biofuels, anyway – is how the engine has been modified to turn the Dodge Dart into an E85-capable machine.

Quote:
Despite being a Chrysler product, the engine was at the IAV Automotive Engineering booth, and IAV's business unit director for gasoline and alternative fuels, Chi Binh La, told AutoblogGreen that standard E85-capable engines use sensors to figure out how much ethanol is in the tank. The new Tigershark uses the engine management computer to determine the combustion characteristics "People throw in a sensor, sensors are expensive and if it fails, you're in trouble. What IAV has done here is we've taken a combined controls and calibration approach. It's amazing this wasn't thought of before," he said.

Basically, when you fill up at the gas station, the engine knows you've put fuel in. This triggers the first of two adaptive learning strategies – one coarse and one fine – that the engine goes through to figure out how much biofuel is in the fuel line. In the coarse check, it burns the new fuel for two seconds and looks at the O2 sensor (which modern gas engines have) and compares the air/fuel ratio from the new fuel to what it was before the fill-up to arrive at, roughly, the new blend. This is "good enough to meet emissions requirements and drivability," La said. Then, after the engine warms up to 80 degrees C, the fine adaptive learning happens. The computer again uses the O2 sensor to determine the balance, but it lasts longer and is more accurate the second time around. "It is using information from available sensors to calibration the flexfuel content," La said. Chrysler contracted IAV to work on the project, and IAV worked on the cold-start calibration, engine mapping and driveability and emissions work.

Chrysler hasn't officially said when the Dart will become flex-fuel capable (earlier reports suggested the middle of 2013), but Chrysler and IAV representatives on the show floor said the engine will be going into the 2014 Dart, which is due later this year.

September 1, 2013 , Auburn Hills, Mich. -

2014 Dodge Dart Limited

2014 Dodge Dart GT

The 2014 Dodge Dart – the leading compact car in total quality, according to Strategic Vision’s Total Quality Index – arrives in dealer showrooms in the fourth quarter of 2013 with a fresh model lineup driven by customer feedback from its first year in the marketplace.

When the all-new compact car launched in the summer 2012 after the Dodge brand’s seven-year absence in the segment, buyers could customize the Dart in more than 100,000 ways. Now, after a full year of sales, the Dodge brand is responding to market data by taking the features customers order the most and bundling them so they’re easier to order and deliver an even greater value. For 2014, the Dart is available in five models: SE, SXT, Aero, Limited and GT.

Also new for 2014, Dodge is expanding the use of the 2.4-liter Tigershark engine in the Dart. The 2014 Dart SXT, Limited and GT models are all powered by the standard 2.4-liter Tigershark MultiAir2 I-4 engine, which produces 184 horsepower and 171 lb.-ft. of torque and is mated to a standard six-speed manual transmission (SXT and GT models) or available six-speed automatic transmission (standard on the Limited model). The 2014 Dart Aero model, which gets up to 41 miles per gallon (mpg) on the highway, is powered by the 1.4-liter MultiAir Turbo engine mated to a standard six-speed manual transmission or available dual-dry clutch transmission (DDCT). The 2014 Dart SE model is powered by the 2.0-liter Tigershark engine mated to a standard six-speed manual transmission or available six-speed automatic transmission.

Class-leading safety and security features, including 10 standard air bags
Some things don’t change. The Dodge Dart continues to redefine the compact car segment with its stylish, athletic exterior design, an exquisite interior design that’s well-crafted with high-quality materials and attention to detail not typically found in the compact car segment. The Dart is loaded with more than 60 safety and security features that give drivers and passengers peace of mind. Constructed of 68 percent high strength steel, among the highest in the industry, the Dodge Dart’s key available safety and security features include a class-leading 10 standard air bags, four-wheel anti-lock brakes standard on every model, electronic stability control, electronic roll mitigation, all-speed traction control, ParkView rear backup camera, Blind-spot Monitoring, Rear Cross Path detection, ParkSense rear park assist, LATCH anchors, which allow a child seat to be placed in any of the three rear seat positions, and much more.

Class-exclusive, easy-to-use technology can’t be touched elsewhere in the segment

The 2014 Dodge Dart is loaded with innovative technology that is easy-to-use and delivers the information and entertainment drivers want while allowing them to keep their eyes on the road and hands on the wheel. The Dart offers the class-exclusive Uconnect infotainment system with an 8.4-inch touchscreen radio, the largest in the segment; the Uconnect Voice Command system, which allows drivers to operate a Bluetooth compatible phone with their hands on the wheel and eyes on the road, enables drivers to switch radio modes, tune to AM/FM and SiriusXM Radio stations and request real-time information (such as fuel prices) from SiriusXM Travel Link using natural voice commands; and features a 7-inch full-color customizable LED instrument cluster to let the customer decide what format they want the information displayed.

Steering, handling and dynamics engineered for the driver
The Dart’s chassis is engineered to deliver sporty European handling dynamics and steering precision with ride and comfort characteristics tuned for North American roads. The FIAT Group architecture – compliments of the award-winning Alfa Romeo Giulietta – is the basis of the Dart’s underpinnings. The Giulietta is renowned for satisfying the most demanding customers in terms of exceptional driving dynamics and agility, and that DNA carries over to the new Dodge Dart.

The exceptional balance of fun-to-drive dynamics, emergency handling, ride comfort and a quiet cabin is accomplished through the suspension bushing tuning and the Dart’s exceptional body structure, including the front aluminum cradle, rear upper and underbody structure reinforcement and superior suspension attachment stiffness.

With a 15:1 steering ratio, the 2013 Dodge Dart is one of the fastest-steering vehicles in the compact car segment. Dart features standard electric power steering (EPS) on all models, which delivers sporty handling by managing significant loads at all steering wheel operating speeds. All of the power assist is provided via an electric motor system rather than a traditional hydraulic system. Because the system is fully electronic, the driver experiences optimal steering effort at all vehicle speeds, and there is less noise and better fuel efficiency since there is no parasitic loss from a power steering pump.

For the 2014 model year, the Dodge Dart starting U.S. Manufacturer’s Suggested Retail Price (MSRP) is $15,995, (all prices exclude $995 destination).

Rumored:

The 2014 Dodge Dart with the 2.4L Engine Could Hit 36mpg

Rumors are floating around the internet that the 2014 Dodge Dart sedans powered by the 2.4L Tigershark 4-cylinder engine will offer 36 miles per gallon on the highway – an improvement of 30% over those Darts powered by the same engine during the 2013 model year.

Last week we brought you the news that the 2014 Dodge Dart lineup would rely far more heavily on the 2.4L Tigershark engine that was reserved for the performance oriented Dart GT (shown above) during the 2013 model year. For 2014, the Dart SXT, Limited and GT will all rely on the 2.4L and only the 2.4L for power as there are currently no optional engines for any of the Dart trimlines. This raised some eyebrows as this move would make the highest volume trimlines less efficient than the outgoing model year vehicles that were powered by either the base 2.0L Tigershark or the 1.4L MultiAir turbo motor but it seems that Chrysler has done some tuning to the largest of the Dart engine options to improve the fuel economy levels quite a bit – with the engine offering up to 36 miles per gallon for the 2014 model year.

According to the folks at Allpar.com, the 2014 Dodge Dart SXT, Limited and GT fitted with the 2.4L Tigershark engine and a 6-speed manual transmission will return 36 miles per gallon on the highway while those same models with the automatic transmission option will hit 35mpg on the highway. For comparison, the 2013 Dodge Dart GT with the 2.4L engine and the manual transmission offered 33mpg on the highway while automatic GT models were expected to reach just 30mpg.

Official EPA fuel economy figures have not been announced but should this information from Allpar be accurate, the 2014 Dodge Dart with the 2.4L engine and the manual transmission will be as efficient on the highway as the 2.0L base engine now found only in the Dart SE and when compared to the Dart SE with the automatic transmission – 35mpg would actually make the far more powerful 2.4L mill slightly more efficient than the 2.0L engine on the highway. Those who want to be able to hit 41 miles per gallon can still turn to the 2014 Dart Aero with a manual transmission while auto Aero owners can look to reach the EPA number of 40mpg.

Provided that these figures for the 2014 Dodge Dart are accurate and there is no improvement to the base 2.0L engine, there is a good chance that the consumer market won’t have many complaints about the lack of engine options for the highest volume Dart trimlines. When presented with a more powerful engine that offers lesser fuel economy, it is almost certain that some buyers will complain about the fact that they cannot opt for one of the more efficient engines but with more power AND better fuel economy – making the 2.4L Tigershark engine the standard mill under the hood of most 2014 Dart sedans makes perfect sense.

We are left wondering how the company could have reached these lofty numbers for the 2014 Dodge Dart with the 2.4L engine and it could be a case where the higher numeric gears (5th, 6th) have been adjusted to lower the RPMs on the highway but it seems unlikely that the company would do that for the 2.4L and not the 2.0L and if they did it for both engines, you would think that both engines would receive a similar boost in fuel economy. At the same time, Chrysler engineers could have made some subtle changes to the 2.4L engine to pull out 10% better fuel economy but they may have done so at the expense of power. Should that be the case, the Dart GT might still be the only model to offer the 184hp and 174lb-ft of torque while the non-GT models like the SXT and Limited would offer less power but better fuel economy.

Once official numbers are revealed for the 2014 Dodge Dart, it will be interesting to see how the 2.4L engine sizes up to the 2.0L engine in terms of city and combined fuel economy. The 2013 Dart GT with the “old” 2.4L Tigershark was within a couple MPGs of the 2.0L models and highway fuel economy was actually the biggest of the gaps between the two engines so such a vast improvement in terms of 2.4L: highway mileage could help bring the combined numbers – and perhaps the city figures – closer to those of the less powerful base engine in the Dart SE.

March 3, 2014 , Auburn Hills, Mich. -

The 2014 Dodge Dart has been named a “Best Bet” in the compact car category of this year’s edition of The Car Book.

It is the second consecutive year the Dart has been so honored.

The recognition is based on an analysis of wide-ranging information collected from government and independent sources. The analysis is conducted by The Car Book and the Center for Auto Safety and considers crash test results, safety features, rollover rating, preventative maintenance schedules, repair costs, warranty coverage, fuel economy, complaint data and insurance costs.

The 2014 Dodge Dart achieved an overall score of “9.” The highest possible score is “10.”

“The Car Book’s recognition of the Dart as a ‘Best Bet’ for two years running confirms what our customers are telling us,” said Tim Kuniskis, President and CEO–Dodge Brand. “The Dodge Dart has unique combination of distinctive styling, fun-to-drive performance, up to 41 mpg, segment-leading safety features, and easy-to-use technology, all combined, making it a tremendous value.”

The 2014 Dodge Dart scored “9” for having low repair costs, and “8” in the key categories of warranty coverage, rollover rating, fuel economy and crash tests.

The 2014 Dart recently was named a Top Safety Pick by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. The car also boasts a 5-star rating – the highest possible assessment – in the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s crash-testing program.

The Dodge Dart also tops the compact car segment in total quality, according to Strategic Vision Total Quality Index

The Dart’s performance is enhanced by more than 60 available safety and security features. The list includes 10 standard-equipment air bags, a total unsurpassed in the compact-car segment.

The 2014 Dodge Dart further benefits from a high-strength-steel content-ratio of 68 percent, one of the highest in the industry.

Equipped with a 1.4-liter turbocharged, intercooled I-4 engine with MultiAir electro-hydraulic valve-actuation and six-speed manual transmission, the Dart also earns a highway fuel-economy rating of 41 miles per gallon (mpg).

“We appreciate the fact that Dodge has made a significant contribution to improving the market choices for the American car buyer,” says The Car Book’s Jack Gillis. “The fact that your vehicles have the quality and features most important to today’s car buyer is a testament to your desire to meet customer needs.”

Being named a “Best Bet” in The Car Book is the latest accolade bestowed on the Dodge Dart. Its celebrated Uconnect hands-free navigation and communication technology earned 2014 Connected Car of the Year honors from Connected World Magazine.

The award was given in the small car category. The Dodge Dart is considered a small car, but its total interior volume of 97.2 cu. ft. (2.75 cu m) rivals that of mid-size cars, according to U.S. Environmental Protection Agency classifications.

Strategic Vision also recently listed the 2014 Dart among its “Most Loved Vehicles in America.” Ratings are based on calculations that consider vehicle attributes and performance, and customer attitude.

Angry Slow Dodge Dart sales prompts temporary layoffs

Slow Dodge Dart sales prompts temporary layoffs at Chrysler plant

DETROIT, March 5

(Reuters) - Poor sales of the compact Dodge Dart led to a week of layoffs for 325 workers at the Fiat Chrysler Automobiles plant in Belvidere, Illinois, a company spokeswoman said on Wednesday.

Dart sales are down 33 percent so far this year for the first jointly designed vehicle in the Fiat-Chrysler marriage, built on the same architecture of the Alfa Romeo Giulietta.

Quote:
In 2014 results through February, Dart fell to ninth place among compact cars in the U.S. market, from eighth place last year, overtaken by the Forte from Kia Motors Corp. Toyota Motor Corp's Corolla, the most popular compact car, has sold nearly five times as well as the 10,000 Dart sedans through February, according to Autodata Corp.

The Chrysler spokeswoman would not give production cut figures at Belvidere, saying only that the temporary layoffs were meant "to balance vehicle supply with current sales demand."

The plant, located about 70 miles northwest of Chicago, has about 4,500 employees.

Dennis Virag, president of the Automotive Consulting Group in Michigan, said Chrysler is struggling to sell the Dart because it lags competitors despite improvements over the previous model, the Caliber.

"It's a good-looking car, but it's under-powered. Dodge is just not a brand that's in the minds of the customers when they go out looking for a small car," Virag said.

That was a perception Chrysler hoped to change with the Dart.

Gary Brown, a Long Island, New York store owner who heads the Chrysler Dealer Council, said a relatively late model year change has left an inordinate amount of 2013 Dart models on dealer lots.

Auto sales website AutoTrader.com shows there are twice as many 2013 models of Dart on dealer lots as 2014 models.

Alec Gutierrez, an analyst with industry research firm Kelley Blue Book, said Dodge in February increased the average incentives discount by $400 from a year earlier, to $2,200 per vehicle.

Before incentives, the Dart retails for about $17,000 to the mid-$20,000s.

Dodge Dart Debacle

03/19/2014

Quote:
Given that the Dart is only one year old (launched as an all-new model for 2013) this is extremely worrisome news for Chrysler. The Belvidere, Illinois plant where Darts are assembled has been partially idled — with weeks-long layoffs for hundreds of workers. And — sure sign of desperation — Chrysler has upped the incentives for prospective Dart buyers from $400 last year to $2,200 per vehicle.

Sudden upturn in Dart sales

06/04/2014

Quote:
BELVIDERE — Powered by an improving economy and renewed backing from Chrysler Group LLC, dealers in the U.S. just had their best month selling Belvidere-built vehicles since the early days of the Dodge/Plymouth Neon.

In May, dealers sold 25,552 Dodge Darts, Jeep Compasses and Jeep Patriots. It was the most sales for Belvidere models since May 1996, when dealers sold 26,185 Dodge and Plymouth Neons.

May was a record sales month both for the Compass and, perhaps more important, the Dart, which recorded 8,644 sales. The Dart’s best month before May had been April 2013, with 8,099 sales.

Sales of the Dart had been down year over year in each of the past five months. Activity for that model had dropped so much that in March Chrysler temporarily laid off workers at its Belvidere assembly plant who worked specifically on the Dart.

John Wolf, a general sales manager for Jack Wolf Auto Group in Belvidere, said interest in the Dart had grown since dealers exhausted their inventories of the discontinued Dodge Avenger and older Chrysler 200s.

“Chrysler was offering generous incentives on those and as they’ve run out, Chrysler has increased its incentives on the Dart,” Wolf said. According to the Chrysler website, the company is offering $2,000 off the Dart, which has a base price of $16,495. “There also just is a renewed sense of buyer optimism. We had excellent months at both of our stores. It’s fun to sell again.”

Dart expands availability of 2.4-liter engine

Dart expands availability of 2.4-liter engine

06/23/2014

When Dodge re-entered the compact segment in 2012 it did so with the Dart, one of the first products to come from the Fiat takeover of Chrysler. Built upon a modular chassis platform shared with the Italian Alfa Romeo Giulietta, also owned by Fiat, the Dart is a four-door sedan with a coupelike profile and a choice of three engines.

Competing with cars such as the Ford Focus, Chevy Cruze, Toyota Corolla, Hyundai Elantra and Nissan Sentra is a formidable task, and sales have been disappointing. The Dart has simple, clean styling and a pleasant interior, but it seems to lack the kind of sporty personality one might expect from its Italian heritage.

For 2014, the Chrysler simplified the Dart lineup by bundling popular features into packages and made the 2.4-liter Tigershark engine standard in the SXT, Limited and GT models. The engine comes with a six-speed manual transmission or an optional six-speed automatic.

Dart prices start at $15,995 and range to $22,995 for the Limited. The Aero gets the turbocharged, 1.4-liter engine with a dual-clutch automatic. The SE comes with a 2.0-liter engine.

The Aero is a high-mileage model rated at 41 miles per gallon rating with the manual transmission.

I drove an SXT Rallye with an automatic transmission from Chrysler’s press fleet. The Rallye package consists of a touring suspension, rear stabilizer bar, black grille, 17-inch wheels and a leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob.

The 2.4-liter engine has decent midrange power and was less than energetic. Brisk acceleration takes a serious poke of the throttle. Fuel economy is rated at 23 mpg in the city and 35 on the highway.

Slip behind the wheel and you’re greeted with a pleasant interior. The original design goal was to create a cabin that was more upscale than other cars in this price segment, mainly because the old Chrysler had a reputation for subpar interiors. The Dart’s cabin has a good mixture of materials and textures, and the 8.4-inch touch screen is one of the easier ones to use.

The Uconnect Bluetooth system is operated by voice or the in-dash touch screen. A USB port is available, as is iPod control. Garmin navigation is optional. The backup camera delivers an excellent view.

The SXT’s cloth front seats were shaped to provide good lateral and lumbar support. I wasn’t enamored of the bright stripes in the center. Back seat legroom is tight, and getting in and out is hard to do without bumping your head, thanks to the sloping roofline. Trunk space is good.

The Dart’s touring suspension is fairly firm and it keeps the car flat in turns. Uneven pavement produces some fairly noticeable thumping in the cabin.
Price

The base price of the test car was $18,595. Options included the 8.4-inch Uconnect touch screen, iPod control, back-up camera, touring suspension, Rallye cloth seats, leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob, fog lamps, 17-inch wheels, six-speed automatic transmission with AutoStick and Sirius satellite radio. The sticker price was $22,025.
Warranty

Three years or 36,000 miles with a five-year, 100,000-mile powertrain warranty.
