2016 Dodge Viper TA 2.0

The Dodge brand will continue electrifying the performance car world in 2016 with its flagship, hand-built American supercar.

Not only is the new Dodge Viper ACR (American Club Racer) back in the lineup as the ultimate track car, Dodge is also expanding the Viper’s exclusive production elements like never before.

With the introduction of matte-finish exterior paint, the 2016 Viper is now offered in more than 50 million unique build configurations, made up from the more than 16,000 unique paint color options and more than 48,000 unique stripe combinations. Now more than ever, Viper customers have the ability to choose a truly one-of-a-kind, hand-built American supercar.

Fastest street-legal Viper track car ever
The Viper ACR returns in 2016, prepared to honor its long-standing legacy as the ultimate street-legal track car through significant aerodynamic and suspension upgrades.

Originally introduced in 1999 and last available for the 2010 model year, the Dodge Viper ACR has a long-standing legacy as the ultimate street-legal track car for club racing. The new 2016 model honors that performance legacy with significant aerodynamic and suspension upgrades, new Brembo® Carbon Ceramic Matrix brakes with six-piston front calipers and Kuhmo high-performance tires specifically designed for the ACR. Standard equipment highlights include:

Ultimate stopping performance combined with unprecedented brake fade resistance through ACR-exclusive Brembo Carbon Ceramic Matrix 15-inch two-piece rotors and six-piston front calipers
Unique track suspension features 10-setting, double-adjustable, Bilstein coil-over racing shocks and unique race alignment, delivering up to 3 inches of suspension height adjustment for fine-tuning corner weight
Latest race tire compound technology with massive Kumho® Ecsta V720 high-performance tires (295/25/19 front, 355/30/19 rear), designed and developed specifically for the 2016 Dodge Viper ACR, delivers lap times that are 1.5 seconds faster than off-road-only race tires
Combination of suspension, aero treatment and ACR-specific tires delivers sustainable 1.5 g cornering during high-speed turns
Lightweight battery, lightweight carpet, minimal three speaker audio and manual seats designed to manage weight and maintain optimal 50/50 weight distribution
Powered by iconic, hand-built 8.4-liter V-10 engine rated at 645 horsepower and 600 lb.-ft. of torque – the most torque of any naturally aspirated sports-car engine in the world
Unique Alcantara hand-crafted interior to assist driver stability under high G-loading features iconic “ACR” dash badge and accent stitching
Optional ACR Extreme Aero Package (late availability) delivers nearly 1 ton of peak downforce at top speed through massive, adjustable, dual-element carbon fiber rear wing, rear carbon fiber diffuser, unique SRT hood with removable louvers, detachable extension for the front splitter and additional dive planes

More than 50 million unique build configurations = truly exotic, one-of-a-kind snake
For 2016, the Dodge Viper is available in more than 50 million unique configurations with the introduction of matte-finish paint across all exterior colors and stripes. Customers can choose from more than 16,000 unique paint colors and more than 48,000 unique stripe combinations from the “1 of 1” customization program, for a truly one-of-a-kind, hand-built American supercar.

Customers can also choose the matte finish option on all 11 additional production colors, including Adrenaline Red, Billet Silver Metallic, Black Venom, Bright White, Ceramic Blue, Competition Blue, GTS-R Blue, Gunmetal Pearl, Stryker Orange, Stryker Purple and Yorange.

All 2016 Dodge Viper models are available with stripes. GT, GTC, GTS and ACR models offer optional “GTS” stripes that run the length of the coupe from the front to rear fascia. The SRT and GTC models are available with “SRT” stripes starting on the clamshell hood and making their way onto the roof and finishing on the rear hatch. Viper GTC and ACR models are available with the ACR center band and driver’s side stripe.

Stripe configurations are expertly applied in the paint booth before the main body color. Only after the paint is cured, a final clear coat is used to ensure the stripes are an integral part of the finished product.

Exterior stripes are offered in Black Venom, Billet Silver, Bright White, Gunmetal Pearl and Adrenaline Red or from the custom “1 of 1” color palette.

Each 1 of 1 GTC model Viper features a personalized instrument panel badge with the customer’s chosen name to commemorate their exclusive design.

Viper GTC Customizer offers personalized online design
On the 2016 Dodge Viper “1 of 1” GTC model, the new Viper GTC Customizer offers Viper lovers the chance to design their personalized version of the only hand-built performance supercar as part of the enhanced customization program. Available at Dodge Viper GTC Customizer | driveSRT, the Viper GTC Customizer lets enthusiasts create their own virtual-reality vision of the Dodge Viper through dynamic elements that deliver a unique online design experience.

Starting inside the Design Studio of the customizer, users create their one-of-a-kind Snake from the ground up. Users can “sit” in the virtual cockpit and take an up-close tour of all 18 available trim options.

Once the design of the perfect Viper is complete, users can place the vehicle in their own lifestyle environments to preview how their custom Viper GTC will look in the real world.

Users also can share their custom supercar designs with family and friends. Images may be downloaded in various resolutions to share on social media or used as wallpaper on phones, tablets or computers. A PDF file of the image, complete with all technical information selected, can be downloaded — an especially useful tool for those ready to purchase. Designers can also share their custom Viper on the GTC Inspiration Gallery for other enthusiasts to appreciate and enjoy.

The enhanced “1 of 1” customization program is available exclusively for customer orders (not for dealer stock). No two customers can order the same configuration, including color, in the same model year.

Stryker Orange and Stryker Purple add to Viper’s vast exterior color palette for 2016
Available on the 2016 Viper GTC and ACR models, new Stryker Orange expands the world-class exterior color palette with enhanced pigments that add depth to the finish and reflections to show off the dramatic curves of the Viper. Stryker Purple is available on Viper GTC only.

Hand-painted process brings exclusive flexibility

The Dodge Viper’s unique hand-painted process enables the flexibility to deliver industry-first custom paint options that offer unequal personalization while meeting the latest industry durability standards.

Each Viper has an extremely high quality level paint finish that ranks as one of the best in the industry. It takes between 145 to 160 man hours to prep and hand-paint the Viper body panels. After paint and clear coat, every Viper body panel is sanded smooth by hand with 1,000 grit paper and polished to a near mirror finish.

The individuals who paint the Viper are truly specialized artisans. The application of the exterior paint is a detailed and intricate process, taking approximately eight hours to complete. The process starts with a base color coat followed by a tinted mid-coat and topped off with a clear finish. Each coat application adds depth and accentuates the curvature of the Viper’s exterior design.

Nose to tail stripes are also hand painted and finished – unlike most cars that use decals – underneath the clear coat. This results in a completely smooth surface with no discernable edges to the stripe. A stripe adds 18 hours to the overall paint process.

As a result of this unique hand-painted process, Viper is able to offer industry-exclusive matte finish across its full color palette.

Awe-inspiring V-10 powertrain
The heart and soul of the 2016 Dodge Viper is its legendary, handcrafted, all-aluminum 8.4-liter, mid-front V-10 overhead-valve engine, featuring an ultra-high-flow, lightweight composite intake manifold; high-strength forged pistons; sodium-filled exhaust valves; exhaust system catalysts to ease backpressure and an aluminum flywheel that reduces reciprocating losses.

Power output of the SRT-engineered V-10 is 645 horsepower and 600 lb.-ft. torque – the most torque of any naturally aspirated sports-car engine in the world.

Approximately 25 pounds have been shaved from the fully dressed engine compared with the previous-generation model (2010 model year).

The Tremec TR6060 six-speed manual transmission features close gear ratios and a final-drive ratio of 3.55. Short shifter throws make the 2016 Dodge Viper models extremely engaging to drive. Its top speed of 206 mph is achieved through 6th gear with maximum engine speed (redline) at 6,200 rpm.

Outstanding ride, handling and capability
Starting with a stiffer structure that provides 50 percent more torsional rigidity than the previous generation model, the 2016 Dodge Viper chassis benefits from numerous enhancements – many learned through racing efforts with Viper GTS-R, Competition Coupe and ACR-X models.

In addition to the aluminum X-brace under the hood that ties the suspension pickup points to the magnesium cowl super casting, an aluminum impact beam at the front of the car contributes to 50/50 weight distribution, while providing excellent crashworthiness. This also benefits torsional rigidity and stiffness.

Structurally, many reworked chassis components take advantage of new materials able to accommodate reduced thickness and complex shapes without compromising structural rigidity. The result is an overall weight savings of approximately 100 pounds versus the previous generation model.

The Dodge Viper SRT model includes a standard single mode, high-performance suspension, while the GT, GTC and GTS models add a driver-selectable suspension system featuring Bilstein DampTronic Select shock absorbers with street and track settings. The new ACR features a unique track suspension with 10-setting, double-adjustable, Bilstein coil-over racing shocks and unique race alignment delivering up to 3 inches of suspension height adjustment for fine-tuning corner weight.

Dodge Viper SRT, GT, GTC, and GTS models ride on standard Pirelli P Zero, Z-rated tires with outstanding grip, steering feel and cold-weather performance, regardless of road surface, while also broadening the performance envelope on the street or the track. The new ACR rides on the latest race tire compound technology with massive Kumho Ecsta V720 high-performance tires (295/25/19 front, 355/30/19 rear), designed and developed specifically for the 2016 Dodge Viper ACR.

Standard safety technologies include electronic multistage stability control and traction control, which helps to maximize traction performance at virtually any speed and driving environment.

All 2016 Dodge Viper models feature a steering-wheel-mounted switch for the standard launch control, allowing for optimal acceleration from standing starts.

Aerodynamic performance to the maximum

The optional Advanced Aerodynamics Package, TA 1.0 Package and Time Attack Group 1.0 include carbon fiber front corner splitters and a carbon fiber rear spoiler, which provide 278 pounds of downforce at 150 mph and 460 pounds of downforce at top speed.

The optional TA 2.0 Package and Time Attack Group 2.0 feature lower dive planes, carbon fiber front corner splitters and a larger rear wing, which provide 400 pounds of downforce at 150 mph and 662 pounds of downforce at top speed.

The Viper ACR sports a rear wing that is 40 percent larger than the TA 2.0. For maximum downforce, the optional ACR Extreme Aero Package with its larger, adjustable dual-element carbon fiber rear wing, rear carbon fiber diffuser, unique SRT hood with removable louvers, detachable extension for the front splitter and additional dive planes all add up to produce unprecedented peak downforce numbers of nearly 1 ton at top speed.

Benchmark braking
Brake performance for the 2016 Dodge Viper is engineered to provide short stopping distances, low modulation, outstanding durability and balanced brake performance without fading under extreme conditions.

Each corner of every Viper features four-piston Brembo brakes with fixed aluminum calipers and vented rotors boasting a diameter of 14.0 x 1.26 inches (355 x 32 mm). Brake calipers are forged. All surfaces are machined for full weight optimization. The calipers are among the stiffest available. Heat distortion is nearly eliminated, even under the most demanding braking conditions.

Lightweight and slotted two-piece rotors from StopTech are standard on the Dodge Viper GT, GTC and GTS models for 2016.

Four available equipment packages (TA 1.0, TA 2.0, Time Attack 1.0 and Time Attack 2.0) feature a Brembo brake system with unique, slotted, vented high-thermal calipers and two-piece, wide annulus rotors and pads, to increase thermal capacity and optimize heat dissipation providing improved extreme use.

The new ACR features standard Brembo Carbon Ceramic Matrix brakes with 15-inch two-piece rotors and six-piston front calipers, which deliver ultimate stopping performance with unprecedented brake fade resistance.

Race-inspired, high-performance interiors

The driver-oriented interior cabins of all 2016 Dodge Vipers feature superior craftsmanship, premium material appointments and performance-oriented technologies.

All major interior surfaces are sewn and wrapped, with additional padding applied in comfort areas.

Ballistic 2 Premium high grip seats are standard on the SRT model. The Viper GT model brings in standard Nappa leather with Alcantara inserts and is available with full Nappa leather seats. SRT and GT models are both adorned with suede panels and accent stitching. Color combinations include a black interior with black seats, a black interior with Sepia seats, and a black interior with Demonic Red seats.

Standard on the Viper GTS model, Nappa leather-wrapped surfaces surround the cabin; Laguna leather seats and an Alcantara headliner are standard. Accent colors are applied to the seats, doors, center console and stitching, including black and two-tone combinations of Sepia and black, and a Demonic Red and black combination.

Also available on the GTC model is a fully wrapped premium Laguna leather interior in all black, all Sepia or all Demonic Red resulting in a luxurious full-dipped look.

Standard on the Viper ACR and optional on the GTC are high-grip Alcantara leather seats in black with either Header Red or silver accent stitching, Alcantara wrapped steering wheel, ACR badge, Alcantara door trim panels with laser etched race-flag design and Moroccan sun interior bezels.

Quality fit and finish is showcased across the lineup with details such as the triple paint-finished
gun-metal appliqués on the cluster bezel, HVAC outlets, window-switch bezels, shifter base, park-brake bezel and the integrated passenger grab-handle on the center console.

An optional Interior Carbon Fiber Accents Package, which includes carbon fiber trim on the steering wheel, door trim and switches, instrument cluster, panel vents, grab handle, console shifter and center stack bezel, is also available.

Standard high-performance racing seats from Sabelt feature a lightweight shell created by a state-of-the-art resin transfer molding technology for mass reduction and long-term durability. Both driver and passenger enjoy thigh support and deep side-bolsters designed to match the extreme lateral acceleration capabilities of the Dodge Viper.

Seating positions provide ample room and performance-driving ergonomics. Seat travel stretches 3.5 inches (90 mm) overall for numerous seating options. Seat height also can be adjusted by up to 1.6 inches (40 mm) – manually on the SRT (power optional) and ACR, while power-controlled on GT, GTC and GTS models.

A 7-inch, reconfigurable digital display cluster with its full-time analog tachometer is designed specifically for the Dodge Viper.

The dominant center tachometer display features an animated readout that glows red and shows off the “Stryker” logo when engine rpm approaches redline, safely alerting the driver to upshift.

Drivers can configure the tachometer to display their last shift point and a peak rpm hold marker can be set up for optimum performance. Views include tachometer-only or tachometer with digital speed readout.

The reconfigurable digital cluster provides an unmatched presentation of the exclusive SRT Performance Pages’ statistics and feedback to the driver, including 0-to-60 mph; 0-to-100 mph; eighth- and quarter-mile elapsed times; launch control; braking distance; instant g-force measurement readouts and top-speed performance.

The 8.4-inch touchscreen Uconnect Media Center doubles as a display for SRT Performance Pages content, such as quarter-mile elapsed time and speed. Data also can be stored for future reference.

Uconnect provides new level of connectivity

For 2016, Uconnect is introducing new features that include the all-new Drag and Drop menu bar, Siri Eyes Free and Do Not Disturb features, all of which can be viewed via the 8.4-inch touchscreen.

Drag and Drop Menu Bar: Dodge Viper owners now have the ability to personalize their dashboard to fit their lifestyle and have one-button access to the features and services they value most. From Travel Link, to climate control and Yelp, drivers now can simply drag their favorite feature or service icon from the apps menu and move them to their Uconnect system’s main menu bar.
Siri Eyes Free: Via the voice button on the steering wheel and compatible with an Apple iPhone 4s or later, with Siri Eyes Free drivers can speak natural language voice commands to send text messages, play music, set reminders, place phone calls and access turn-by-turn directions. Drivers simply push and hold the voice recognition button on the steering wheel until the Siri screen appears on the 8.4-inch touchscreen and hear the audible tones.
Do Not Disturb: Viper owners who prefer not be interrupted with phone calls or text messages while driving can choose to turn on the new “Do Not Disturb” and “Reply with Text Message” feature. Located within the Uconnect system’s phone screen, once enabled with a push of button or via voice command, the Do Not Disturb icon will route all incoming mobile calls to voicemail and suppress text messages. If the Viper owner chooses to enable the Do Not Disturb feature, they also have the ability to send a default or customized response once a call or text message is received.

Aggressive and functional exterior designs
The timeless exterior design of the 2016 Dodge Viper SRT lineup blends contemporary execution with evolutionary refinement.

Carbon-fiber hood, roof, decklid and aluminum door panels result in significant weight savings, high-speed stability and a .369 drag coefficient while still achieving negative lift.

The forward-hinged hood offers unobtrusive access to several service points underneath. Six standard air extractors on the Viper SRT and ACR models (available on GTC) or two standard air extractors on the GT, GTC, and GTS models remove heat from the SRT-engineered V-10 engine. The “Stryker” badge is positioned in the center of the hood in front of the air intake.

The classical low-stance, extreme cab-rearward proportions and dramatic fender “gills” – another traditional Viper design cue that also helps to extract heat from the engine compartment – comprise the unmistakable silhouette of the iconic supercar.

The 2016 Viper models feature a contemporary take on the traditional “double-bubble” roof configuration that maximizes headroom for the driver and passenger while maintaining a low frontal area – allowing additional room for helmets during recreational competitive driving.

The optional Exterior Carbon Fiber Package includes carbon fiber brake ducts located in the front grille opening, carbon fiber rear brake ducts behind the side glass and a carbon fiber rear applique.

Dual-function, bi-xenon projector headlamps are tightly packaged with white light-emitting diode (LED) daytime running lamps and LED turn signals in a sinister “snake eye” configuration.

LED tail lamps integrate stop-and-turn illumination in one element to provide a unified “crystallized” illumination effect.

The lower-front grille is purposefully designed as an evolution of the traditional Viper low-profile cooling opening configuration and discretely carries a refined V-shape structure.

The class-exclusive dual side exhaust system carries further refinement with cast-aluminum, sill-mounted exhaust bezels.

The five-spoke, forged-aluminum “Rattler” wheel design on the 2016 SRT model is available in polished (standard), Hyper Black, Matte Black or Black Vapor Chrome finishes.

The split six-spoke forged-aluminum “Venom” wheel design is available with three finishes, including polished, Hyper Black or Matte Black.

The available Sidewinder II wheels are lightweight, track-ready wheels in Hyper Black or Matte Black finishes. The newly designed ACR wheel is available in Gloss Black or Brass Monkey finish.

All Dodge Vipers are hand built exclusively at the Conner Avenue Assembly Plant in Detroit.

2016 Dodge Viper ACR First Drive [w/video]

2016 Dodge Viper ACR First Drive [w/video]

The Dodge Viper is not a comfortable car. Livable, yes. The interior is covered in fine materials. But you still climb over a hot door sill to enter the tiny cabin. And the frequency range of the engine's noises seem specifically designed to cause headaches.

What happens, then, if you remove all pretense of civility from a Viper and add equipment solely aimed at improving lap times? You would have the 2016 Dodge Viper ACR. In terms of achieving its purpose, this car is a absolute success. In many ways it's also the most honest Viper of the current generation.

Quote:
Prices start at $121,990 (including $2,100 gas-guzzler tax and $1,995 destination), or $32,900 more than the least expensive Viper. In ACR trim, the Viper loses the under-carpet padding, 9 of 12 speakers plus amplifier, carpet and trim from the cargo area, and sound deadening in front of the rear wheel wells. The parts of the interior still covered add healthy amounts of Alcantara or optional carbon fiber. That weight loss is compensated by the addition of go-fast bits like the giant rear wing (or the larger "x-wing" on the Extreme Aero Package), 10-way adjustable Bilstein Motorsports shocks, Brembo carbon-ceramic brakes, a rear diffuser, and a front splitter. Total claimed curb weight is 3,392 pounds in Aero trim (standard ACR trim is 18 pounds lighter), which is within a few stone of the rest of the Viper lineup. The diffuser strakes and leading edge of the splitter are removable, made to be replaced after rubbing on track tarmac and make street driving slightly more practical.

Dodger Viper ACR

That the 2016 Dodge Viper ACR is an amazing, track-ready and –focused machine is not very noteworthy. The Viper’s performance cred stands out in a club’s parking lot like a lion among the wildebeests.

All Vipers are equipped with 8.4L V10s that make 645hp and 600 lb. ft. of torque. But the ACR is a bit different—it makes few, if any, concessions to street use. It comes equipped with Bilstein coilover racing shocks, two-piece carbon ceramic 15” (!) front rotors with six-piston calipers, a massive adjustable dual-element carbon fiber rear wing and Kumho racing tires specifically designed for the Viper ACR that are about 14” wide in the rear. They’re also faster than Hoosier R6s around the track, and yes, street-legal.

In fact, somehow, the rest of the ACR is also technically street legal. It has lights and airbags and even a nav system and stereo. But it generates more downforce and power than the GTLM Viper racecar. And the first thing that SRT dynamicist (he tunes all the components that have to do with chassis dynamics—steering, handling, etc on SRT products) Erich Heuschele recommends you do with one is “take it to the race track.” If you’re interested in having some fun on the street, there are other Vipers for that. The ACR is a track weapon.

It has such high levels of grip and performance that the car takes a long time to master. It isn’t one of those cars that after two or three track days you’ve mastered it and reached the car’s limit. You’ll continue getting faster and you’ll enjoy it more and more each time for years to come.

However, numbers and platitudes can only convey so much information. The Viper ACR’s most notable accolade is a jaded automotive journalist’s response while riding shotgun. CarStories.com Podcast host A.J. Gordon is noticeably giddy as he calls the play-by-play around Southern California’s Willow Springs Raceway.

The ACR gets over 140mph by the end of the front straight and can pull over 1.5gs through turns. According to a laughing-out-loud Gordon, “There can not be any more excitement I’ve ever had in a car.

2016 Dodge Viper ACR

2016 Dodge Viper ACR Is Undisputed Track Record King

Ultimate street-legal race car sets new high-performance benchmark with more track records than any production car in the world
Sports Car Club of America (SCCA) has certified lap records at 13 road courses, including world-famous Laguna Seca, Road Atlanta and Virginia International Raceway
With 645 horsepower and more torque than any naturally aspirated engine in a production car, the ACR is purpose built for weekend club racers who want the most extreme, but street-legal, track car available
Significant aerodynamic and suspension upgrades, new Carbon Ceramic brakes with six-piston calipers from Brembo and high-performance Kumho tires, specifically designed for the new 2016 ACR, set this Viper apart on any road course

November 3, 2015 , Auburn Hills, Mich. -

The new 2016 Dodge Viper ACR (American Club Racer) has taken the performance car world by storm with its proven on-track prowess since being introduced earlier this year. Still, the Dodge/SRT team wanted validation that the new Viper ACR is indisputably “the ultimate street-legal race car.”

Beginning in October 2014, when development was in high gear, the new 2016 Dodge Viper ACR started its resetting of the record books by recording never-seen-before lap times at 13 tracks across the country, including world-famous Laguna Seca, Road Atlanta and Virginia International Raceway.

Dodge Viper ACR sets 13 track lap records

Published on Nov 3, 2015

The Dodge Viper ACR, a track-focused, street-legal sports car, cements its high-performance status by setting new lap records for a production car at 13 tracks across the United States.

“The SCCA has certified that the new 2016 Dodge Viper ACR holds more track records than any other production car in the world,” said Tim Kuniskis, Head of Passenger Car Brands - Dodge, SRT, Chrysler and FIAT, FCA - North America. “We expected our new Viper ACR to be the fastest street-legal Viper track car ever. Now we know without a doubt that it is.”

The impressive run has all been accomplished in the 2016 Dodge Viper ACR with the Extreme Aero package, which delivers 1,700+ pounds of peak downforce at top speed through a massive adjustable dual-element carbon fiber rear wing, rear carbon fiber diffuser, unique SRT hood with removable louvers, detachable extension for the front splitter and additional dive planes.

Dodge tapped its own SRT vehicle dynamics and development engineer Chris Winkler, aka “The Wolf,” to take the wheel of the ACR and he delivered, setting 11 of the 2016 Viper ACR’s 13 track records. Winkler is an accomplished SCCA champion who has more than 20 years of racing experience. For the past seven years, he has led the dynamic development of the Dodge Viper, putting his extensive talent to work in developing the flagship American-built supercar.

For consistency, at the historic Laguna Seca Raceway in Monterey, Dodge teamed with champion racecar driver Randy Pobst, who owns dozens of Laguna Raceway track records.

The result: Pobst ran the 2016 Dodge Viper ACR at Laguna to a new track record of 1:28:65. That record-setting time is 5.27 seconds faster than the previous-generation ACR’s track record at Laguna and 1.24 seconds faster than his previous Laguna track record in the Porsche 918 Spyder (1:28:65 vs 1:29.89). That’s the equivalent of 11 car lengths after just one lap at Laguna Seca.

Newest Dodge Viper ACR takes road course racing world by storm
Certified for public roads and engineered to wring every last hundredth of a second out of road course lap times, the 2016 Dodge Viper ACR combines the latest in aerodynamic, braking and tire technology – a recipe designed to carry on the ACR’s lap-time-busting reputation that has made it a legend on race tracks around the world.

The SRT engineering team that developed the 2016 Dodge Viper ACR is well-stocked with members who race their own cars, as well as learning from the factory-based racing Viper GTS-R that competed in the American Le Mans Series and IMSA United SportsCar Championship from 2012-2014, capturing the GTLM class driver and team championships in 2014. For the new Viper ACR, the team focused its efforts on three areas: aerodynamics, chassis and tires to maximize grip, producing never-seen-before handling capabilities and unprecedented lap times.

Ultimate aerodynamic performance
The 2016 Dodge Viper ACR sports a standard front splitter, dive planes and a 1,776 mm-wide adjustable, dual element rear wing, which is 54 percent larger (in top surface area) than the TA (Time Attack) 2.0 and helps to provide 1,101 pounds of downforce at 150 miles per hour (mph) and 1,533 pounds of downforce at 177 mph top speed.

The 2016 Viper’s available Extreme Aero Package produces the highest aerodynamic downforce of any production car. During on-track testing, SRT development engineers have experienced unprecedented downforce numbers of 1,200+ pounds at 150 mph and 1,700+ pounds at 177 mph top speed, along with 12 percent more downforce over the base ACR on straightaways and 21 percent more downforce during aggressive cornering.

The Extreme Aero Package includes a huge (1,876-mm wide) adjustable dual-element rear wing – which is 62 percent larger (in top surface area) than TA 2.0 – rear carbon fiber diffuser, unique SRT hood with removable louvers, detachable extension for the front splitter and four dive planes. The Extreme Aero rear wing, specifically designed for airflow around the Viper’s body, stands taller, sits further rearward and features unique end-plates and gurney lip to produce maximum downforce while minimizing straight line drag. The Extreme Aero Package delivers more than three times the downforce of the Viper TA 2.0 Package.

The rear carbon fiber diffuser extends forward of the rear axle. It includes six removable strake extensions, designed to rub against the track surface for increased straight-line stability and optimized downforce. Removable hood louvers over the front tires reduce air pressure in front wheel wells to provide additional downforce. The detachable front splitter extension and dive planes work with the rear aerodynamic treatment to provide outstanding grip and balanced performance on the track.

Ultimate brake performance
Track duty can punish the brakes. The 2016 Dodge Viper ACR features new Brembo® Carbon Ceramic Matrix brakes for optimum braking performance with unprecedented brake fade resistance, and greater handling capability through reduced un-sprung weight. The system uses 390-millimeter (15.4-inch) two-piece front rotors and 360-millimeter (14.2-inch) two-piece rear rotors. Front brakes use six-piston Brembo® calipers while the rear brakes use four-piston calipers.

The new Carbon Ceramic Matrix brakes have the largest brake pad area ever on Viper. The brakes work in conjunction with ABS and ESC specifically tuned for ACR to take into account the extra grip provided by the additional aero and specifically designed Kumho® tires. Detachable front brake ducts provide additional cooling to the brake calipers for optimum track performance.

Tire, chassis combo keeps Viper ACR glued to the road
The 2016 Dodge Viper ACR is fitted with Kumho® Ecsta V720 high-performance tires designed specifically for the car with unique tread pattern and compounds for front and rear. In testing, the new tires produce lap times that are 1.5 seconds faster than off-road-only race tires.

Low-profile front tires measure 295/25/19 and are mounted on wider 11-inch wide wheels and when combined with the 355/30/19 rear tires provide the largest combined tire patch available on any production car. On the sidewall of the new tires is a unique raised ACR logo.

The Viper ACR’s ABS and five-mode Electronic Stability Control system (Full-on, Sport, Track, Rain, Full-off modes) are specifically tuned for the car to take into account the extra grip offered by the extreme aerodynamic and tire package.

Aluminum bodied, double-adjustable coil-over Bilstein race shocks are designed specifically for the Viper ACR and work in conjunction with ride height adjustment for optimal control of weight transfer and handling performance. Each shock provides independent 10-way rebound and compression adjustability. The suspension package also provides more than 3 inches of ride height adjustment.

Front springs are rated at 600 lbs./in. and rear springs at 1,300 lbs./in., more than double the suspension stiffness of the Viper TA model. With unique race alignment and 1.4 degrees more negative camber than the entry SRT model, the 2016 Dodge Viper ACR is capable of sustaining more than 1.5 g on high-speed turns due to the combined chassis and aerodynamic improvements.

“This car is not a 1-3 lap track special. You can run the car at the track all day, and the performance doesn’t fall off,” added Kuniskis.

Awe-inspiring V-10 powertrain
At the heart of the 2016 Viper ACR is the handcrafted, all-aluminum 8.4-liter V-10 overhead-valve engine, rated at 645 horsepower and 600 lb.-ft. of torque – the most torque of any naturally aspirated sports-car engine in the world. Unique exhaust tips have been added to the side-mounted exhaust pipes to provide reduced exhaust pressure. All Vipers are engineered to withstand severe track duty in ambient temperatures of 100 degrees Fahrenheit with a professional driver. Power reaches the pavement through the standard Tremec TR6060 six-speed manual transmission.

ACR-exclusive interior appointments
The instrument panel cluster hood, lower instrument panel and door armrest panels of the race-inspired interior are wrapped in unique Alcantara suede. A new, ACR-exclusive Alcantara wrapped high-grip steering wheel with color racing stripe and unique badging sets the ACR apart from other production models. New high-grip seats also carry the Alcantara inserts, while the unique dash plaque is finished in carbon fiber. Customers can choose between silver or Header Red accent stitching throughout the interior.

‘1 of 1’ Viper program offers one-of-a-kind street-legal race car
Applying Viper’s exclusive ‘1 of 1’ customization program to Viper ACR allows customers to have more than 50 million build combinations to create their one-of-a-kind Snake from the ground up. With 16,000 exterior color options, 48,000 custom stripe colors, 11 wheel options, 16 interior trims and seven aero packages, three brake packages and four suspension options, Viper customers have the ability to choose a truly one-of-a-kind, hand-built American supercar.

Every Dodge Viper is hand-built in Detroit at the Conner Avenue Assembly Plant.

ACR history
The original Dodge Viper ACR was produced for the 1999 model year and was based off of the second generation coupe. This model had suspension and engine enhancements focused on maximizing performance in road racing and autocross environments. Horsepower was bumped from 450 to 460 horsepower via a unique air filter and smooth air intake hoses. Curb weight was reduced by more than 50 pounds by stripping the audio system and removing other non-essential items, such as the fog lamps. The new stiffer, adjustable suspension removed another 14 pounds. This model also had an "ACR" badge and 20-spoke BBS wheels.

The second version of the Viper ACR was based off of the fourth generation coupe and was built during the 2008-2010 model years.

The 2008/2009 Viper ACR maintained the standard Viper’s 600 hp and 560 lbs.-ft. of torque, while adding aerodynamic, brake and suspension upgrades to the already potent supercar. One development goal was 1,000 pounds of downforce at 150 mph with optimum aero balance – a target achieved through CFD and wind-tunnel testing. Unique coil-over shocks allowed height changes and were step adjustable for compression and rebound.

Spring and anti-roll-bar rates were increased and the ACR was fitted with forged aluminum wheels and track-ready race tires. The new wheels and tires combined with a new two-piece brake rotor system shaved approximately 40 pounds from a base Viper. An additional 40-pound savings (for a total of 80) was possible when ordering the Hard Core Package, which removed the audio system, trunk carpet and sound insulation. The 2008 Viper ACR proved its ultimate performance formula by setting a new track record at the famous 12.9-mile Nürburgring Nordschleife circuit in Germany with an elapsed time of 7:22.1.

For the 2010 model year, the Viper ACR was upgraded further with a redesigned rear wing gurney and end plates to further optimize aerodynamics and improve rear yaw downforce. In addition, a shorter fifth gear ratio improved high-speed acceleration and produced higher straightaway speeds. This improvement was a direct result of SRT’s experience at the Nürburgring Nordschleife where the team found that a revised gear ratio would have resulted in a higher speed capability and potentially a shorter elapsed time. In late September 2011, Dodge returned to the famed circuit and recaptured the production car lap record with a time of 7:12.13.

In late 2009, Dodge announced the non-street-legal Viper ACR-X, targeted at the grassroots racer.

Combining the best performance attributes of the record-setting, street-legal Dodge Viper ACR and the safety equipment of championship-winning Viper Competition Coupe, Dodge produced the non-street-legal racer that made its on-track debut in the summer of 2010 as part of Dodge Viper Cup spec racing series.

The 2010 Dodge Viper ACR-X was also powered by a 8.4-liter V-10, equipped with factory-installed headers, forged pistons and a low-restriction exhaust system that produced 640 horsepower (40 more than production model).

The suspension also was tuned and upgraded specifically for on-track usage, while the weight was lightened by a full 160 pounds (versus the standard production Viper) to take on even the most challenging road course. Additional aerodynamic upgrades improved downforce, while enhancing stability and significantly improving grip in high-speed cornering.

Similar to the Dodge Viper Competition Coupe, the Viper ACR-X contained factory-installed safety equipment, such as a factory-designed roll cage, fuel cell and race seat.

Ralph Gilles Drives the Hell Out of His Viper

Viper ACR At VIR

Published on Nov 9, 2015

Great track day with the very organized and laid back Audi Club of North America - PCC. Last track day of the year and it was a blast. VIR ranks on the very top of my favorite tracks. Too much traffic to get any representative lap times but this machine is clearly professional grade. It is so capable that I am having to unlearn old habits and re-imagine what I believe is possible. This level of down force is really a sort of 4th dimension. At the same time car is so balanced, easy to drive and predictable that my (still a student) wife and I shared it all day!
