September 1, 2011 , Auburn Hills, Mich. - Chrysler Group LLC today reported U.S. sales of 130,119, a 31 percent increase compared with sales in August 2010 (99,611 units), and the best August sales since 2007.

Chrysler Group’s 31 percent sales increase was well above the industry average in August. Models that contributed to the group’s 31 percent increase included the Chrysler 200, Fiat 500, Jeep® Wrangler, Jeep Grand Cherokee, Dodge Durango, Dodge Journey, and the Ram pickup truck.

“In spite of a volatile market, Chrysler managed to significantly outperform the industry again in August with retail sales up 42 percent,” said Reid Bigland, President and CEO – Dodge Brand and Head of U.S. Sales. “Last month also represented our 17th-consecutive month of year-over-year sales growth, and on the back of our 16 all-new or significantly-refreshed products I see that trend easily continuing into the fall.”

The Chrysler, Jeep, Dodge, Ram Truck and FIAT brands all posted sales increases in August. Jeep brand sales were up 58 percent as all five Jeep models posted year over year sales gains. The Jeep brand’s increase was the largest percentage increase of all the brands. The new 2011 Jeep Compass did its part by posting its fifth-consecutive monthly sales record this year.

The FIAT brand recorded the largest monthly sales volume since the 2012 Fiat 500 went on sale in March.

Chrysler Group’s car sales increased 23 percent in August, while the group’s truck sales were up 33 percent compared with the same month a year ago.

Chrysler Group finished the month with a 59-day supply of inventory (294,347 units). U.S. industry sales figures for August are projected at an estimated 12.3 million SAAR.

August 2011 U.S. Sales Highlights by Brand

Jeep® Brand

The Jeep brand continues to roll in 2011 posting a 58 percent sales increase in August, the brand’s best sales volume month since December 2007 and its 16th-consecutive month of year-over-year sales gains. All five Jeep brand models posted a sales increase compared with the same month a year ago.

With 12,949 units sold, the Jeep Wrangler was the top-selling Jeep model in August, and was second only to the Ram pickup truck as the top-selling Chrysler Group model. The Wrangler – the most capable and recognized vehicle in the world – becomes even more capable both on- and off-road for 2012, courtesy of an all-new, more fuel efficient and more powerful 3.6-liter V-6 engine, and a new five-speed automatic transmission – both of which it shares with the award-winning Jeep Grand Cherokee.

The new Jeep Compass, with its unsurpassed compact SUV 4x4 fuel economy (28 Hwy mpg), posted a 130 percent sales increase, the largest year-over-year percentage sales gain of any Jeep model in August. For the year, Compass sales are up 124 percent. The Jeep Grand Cherokee continues to forge ahead with sales up 77 percent in August versus the same month in 2010. August marks its 12th-consecutive month of year-over-year sales gains.

Chrysler Brand

Chrysler brand sales were up 25 percent in August, an increase driven primarily by sales of the new Chrysler 200 mid-size sedan and the all-new Chrysler 300 full-size sedan. Sales of the Chrysler 200 increased 142 percent in August as the star of the award-winning “Born of Fire” Super Bowl commercial posts its best sales month since launch in January.

In August, the Chrysler brand was named Most Ideal Popular Brand in AutoPacific’s 2011 Ideal Vehicle Awards competition. AutoPacific’s Ideal Vehicle Awards are based on owners’ ratings of their new 2011 model year cars and trucks across 15 key vehicle attributes ranging from power and acceleration to interior roominess. Owners are asked if they would change any of those key attributes if they could; the cars or trucks that owners would change the least are the most ideal. The survey includes responses from more than 72,000 vehicle acquirers. The 2011 Chrysler Town & Country won the Ideal Vehicle Award for Minivans, the 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee for Premium Mid-Size SUVs, and the Dodge Challenger for Sporty Cars.

Dodge Brand

The Dodge brand posted an 18 percent sales increase in August compared with the same month in 2010. Leading the sales surge with double-digit percentage increases were the 2011 Dodge Avenger mid-size sedan, Dodge Journey crossover, and Dodge Grand Caravan minivan.

The 2011 Dodge Durango was named a “Top Safety Pick” for 2011 by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) in August. The IIHS recognizes vehicles that perform “good” in front, side, rollover and rear crash test evaluations performed at its Vehicle Research Center in Virginia. This award applies to Durango models built after May 2011. Additionally, to be considered, vehicles also must have available electronic stability control systems, which, research has shown, significantly reduce crash risks.

American performance returning to center stage is the overall message of new television advertising for the Durango. Numerous spots began airing in August which emphasize that “The SUV is Back.” Television and digital advertising demonstrate Durango’s best-in-class driving range, power and towing capacity, seating for seven and other vehicle refinements.

Ram Truck Brand

Ram Truck brand sales increased 7 percent in August. Both the Ram light- and heavy-duty pickup trucks posted sales gains during August compared with the same month in 2010.

Equipment Today magazine in August named the Ram 1500 Tradesman to its 2011 Contractors’ Top 50 Products awards list. According to Equipment Today, recipients of the award were selected based on the volume of reader inquiries and views over the past year for new products published in Equipment Today magazine and posted on the ForConstructionPros.com web site.

Chrysler Group, working in partnership with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), delivered 14 demonstration fleet Ram 1500 plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) pickup trucks to the cities of San Francisco and Sacramento in August. The 28 PHEV Ram 1500 pickups are part of a national demonstration fleet of 140 vehicles that will be used during the next three years to evaluate customer usage, drive cycles, charging, thermal management, fuel economy, emissions and impact on the region’s electric grid.

The 2011 Ram 1500 and the Jeep Grand Cherokee were named to Kelley Blue Book’s “Top 10 Tailgating Cars for 2011.”

September 1, 2011 Autos Insider | Sales for U.S. automakers up; Toyota, Honda fall for August | The Detroit News

Sales for U.S. automakers up; Toyota, Honda fall for August

U.S. sales for Detroit's Big Three were up again in August with Chrysler Group LLC taking the lead with a 31 percent sales jump over last year. Japan's two largest carmakers, however, suffered declines last month.

Toyota Motor Corp.'s sales tumbled 12.7 percent in August to 129,483 vehicles. U.S. sales for the Toyota brand fell 13.6 percent; while sales for its luxury division Lexus were down 7 percent last month.

The carmaker, among the hardest hit by the earthquake in Japan last March, is still trying to regain momentum after it had to shutdown production at many plants due to supply shortages.

Toyota says its outlook is improving in North America, and it will resume full production this month. The all-new 2012 Camry and Camry Hybrid are slated to go on sale soon.

Honda Motor Co.'s sales dropped even further, down 24.3 percent in August over the same month in 2010. Honda sold 82,321 vehicles in August, compared to 108,729 a year ago.

Nissan Motor Co. was the only major Japanese automaker to gain sales last month. It reported a 19.2 percent rise in sales of Nissan and Infiniti vehicles in August, to 91,541.

Compared with most of its Japanese rivals, Nissan has recovered faster from disruptions caused by the March quake in Japan to rebuilt its inventories.

Hyundai Motor Co. continues to show strength with a 9 percent increase on sales of 58,505 for the month from a year ago.

"Demand for Hyundai products remained strong in August despite severe fluctuations in financial markets and the resulting impact on short-term consumer confidence," said Dave Zuchowski, Hyundai Motor America's executive vice president of national sales.

"We're still seeing consumer demand increasing, with Hyundai consideration rates now at an all-time high. This should drive continued sales momentum for Hyundai through the rest of the year, even if the industry struggles a bit," Zuchowski said.

Strong sellers included the new Accent with a 38 percent increase in its second month on the market and the Santa Fe crossover that was up 55 percent.

Chrysler's U.S. sales were up 31 percent last month, the company's best August since 2007.

Chrysler's retail sales surged up 42 percent as the Auburn Hills automaker continued to wean itself off the less profitable daily rental fleet business.

"In spite of a volatile market, Chrysler managed to significantly outperform the industry again in August with retail sales up 42 percent," said Reid Bigland, head of U.S. sales for Chrysler Group. "Last month also represented our 17th consecutive month of year-over-year sales growth, and on the back of our 16 all-new or significantly-refreshed products I see that trend easily continuing into the fall."

All of Chrysler's brands posted impressive gains during the month, which was Fiat's best yet. The 2011 Jeep Compass was a particularly strong performer, with sales up 130 percent year-over-year.

Altogether, Chrysler sold 130,119 vehicles last month, compared to 99,611 in August of 2010.

General Motors Co. saw an 18 percent increase in U.S. auto sales in August, despite a month rocked by a hurricane and turmoil on Wall Street.

GM sold 218,479 vehicles last month and consumers bought vehicles of all types with car sales up 18 percent, crossover sales increased 17 percent and truck sales grew by 18 percent over the same period last year.

"Our balanced portfolio of trucks and fuel-efficient vehicles like the Chevrolet Cruze, Chevrolet Equinox and GMC Terrain are helping GM continue to gain market share, which has now increased in seven of the past eight months," said Don Johnson, vice president, U.S. Sales Operations. "We're carrying good momentum and we're cautiously optimistic that we'll see U.S. economic growth improve in the months ahead."

The Chevrolet Cruze continues its strong streak with sales exceeding 20,000 for the fifth consecutive month.

"The 'new GM' is making the strides it promised. About the only negative signs on GM's spreadsheet of August sales were for models being discontinued or soon to be replaced," commented Edmunds.com Senior Analyst Michelle Krebs.

Ford Motor Co. reported an 11.2 percent increase on sales of 175,220 vehicles. The Ford brand increased sales by 16.1 percent from a year ago while the luxury Lincoln brand went up by 25.4 percent.

"Ford's fuel-efficient cars, crossovers and trucks continue winning over consumers in the marketplace," said Ken Czubay, Ford vice president, U.S. Marketing, Sales and Service. "Our new product lineup - especially our newest cars - continues helping Ford grow even stronger and gain market share on the fiercely competitive East and West coasts."

The subcompact Fiesta enjoyed a 76 percent hike in sales from a year ago while the midsize Fusion was only up 5 percent and the compact Focus was down 9 percent, a drop the automaker blamed on low inventory.

The new Ford Explorer remains hot with sales up 300 percent from a year ago. Truck sales were also up 5 percent.

To address shortages of popular vehicles, Ford said it will produce 645,000 vehicles in the fourth quarter, which is 9 percent more than the same period in 2010.

Volkswagen AG's Volkswagen of America said VW-brand sales rose 10.4 percent, to 25,232 vehicles.

Sharply higher sales of its new Jetta compact led the rise, and Volkswagen officials said they expect to gain momentum with the launch this month of the midsize VW Passat sedan.

Kia Motors America, an industry up and comer, had its best August sales ever. The Korean automaker sold 41,188 vehicles last month, a 26.9 percent increase over the same month a year ago.

The Sorento crossover had its best all-time sales month in August and the Optima midsize sedan also posted strong sales.

Other automakers will report their August sales over the course of the day.

Sales could improve this fall when automakers offer sweeter deals and a wider selection of models.

To boost next month's sales and help people whose cars were damaged by the hurricane, GM is offering to defer payments for 90 days. It's also giving $500 toward the purchase or lease of a new vehicle. The offer is for areas designated major disaster areas by the federal government.

Automotive News reports that in spite of the predictions of some professionals, August auto sales fall below expectations, post-Irene. Hurricane Irene and flagging consumer confidence are largely responsible. Auto sales had been a bright spot for the U.S. economy through May, but began sputtering in the summer as consumer confidence waned and a March earthquake in Japan caused shortages of Honda and Toyota models. Then came the hurricane, which forced many East Coast dealers to close in the month's final weekend. Normally buyers come out on the last weekend, lured by deals and advertising.

Consumers are being cautious, yes, and appropriately so, but they are not retrenching that much. All indications are that the industry is going to continue to slowly grow its sales through the rest of the year. Thus, the company came to recover and despite all odds, the sales slowly increases.
