Chrysler begins work on new engine line at Trenton factory
New assembly to build popular Tigershark engine

Auburn Hills — Chrysler Group LLC has begun work on a new engine assembly line at its motor factory in Trenton — a move that could add more than 200 new jobs at the plant, according to sources familiar with the situation.

They said the new line will build Chrysler's popular four-cylinder Tigershark engine, which is currently produced at the company's Dundee Engine Plant. Dundee would continue to produce the Tigershark. The new line would give Chrysler the added volume it needs to meet demand for the motor, which is used in the recently launched Dodge Dart and will be used in other vehicles.

Quote:
Chrysler would neither confirm nor deny the report.

"As demand for Chrysler Group products continues to increase, the company is constantly reevaluating its production plans to meet those requirements," said spokeswoman Jodi Tinson in a statement emailed to The Detroit News Wednesday. "At this time, we have no further announcements to make."

United Auto Workers Local 372 represents workers at the Trenton plant. Gabe Solano, the local's president, declined to comment on the report.

However, a source at the factory said Brian Harlow, Chrysler's vice president of engine and transmission manufacturing, was at the facility Tuesday. They also said workers have already begun cutting concrete to accommodate the new production equipment and have taken other steps to begin preparing an unused part of the factory.

The new line was originally supposed to go in Dundee, sources said. They said Chrysler told union leaders that manufacturing specialists determined that there was not sufficient room at the facility. But the sources suggested the decision also was motivated by labor issues in Dundee.

Workers there initially voted down a new local agreement with the company last year, but later approved it after the company warned that it might reconsider future investment in the factory.

At the time, analysts expressed concern that further unrest at Dundee could create major disruptions for Chrysler because the factory was its only four-cylinder engine plant in North America. Adding a new four-cylinder line in Trenton would give the company more options in the future.

Those lazy pricks ought to be happy that they have a job, and not a useless Union to protect them.
