Chrysler To Be Sold By End of Month?

October 17, 2008

Though far away from a finalized deal, Cerberus Capital Management hopes to arrange a sale of Chrysler - possibly to GM - by the end of the month.

If such a merger is to happen, it's not likely that today's Chrysler would survive intact. The Wall Street Journal reports that Cerberus is looking at possibly breaking up the company into smaller groups that would be sold to different parties.

For instance, Cerberus may look to spin off Chrysler's engineering wing as a standalone company, sell the Mopar parts operations to another purchaser, and possibly consolidate Chrysler Financial into GMAC - which it also owns a majority stake in.

Likewise, Chrysler's current vehicle portfolio could also be divested in multiple ways. Automotive News suggests GM may be most interested in Chrysler's minivan lineup (a segment missing from GM's offerings), as well as a truck production facility in Mexico.

Although GM could purchase more than those assets, any leftover bits or divisions may be sold to other companies. One possibility is Renault, whose executives disclosed their interest in Chrysler during the 2008 Paris motor show.

While the folks at Cerberus are busy ironing out the details, so too are GM executives. The Wall Street Journal claims GM has teams analyzing the deal, and have identified nearly $10 billion in cost savings that reportedly could be attained through a merger.

GM is confident it can manage Chrysler brands

October 18, 2008

As General Motors Corp. executives work on what a possible merger with Chrysler LLC would look like, they apparently are not discouraged by the idea of adding more brands or dealers to the automaker's business, key factors that analysts have been criticizing.

If a merger is consummated, Chrysler's brands would become just like Chevrolet, Pontiac and Buick, people familiar with the situation tell the Free Press.

Conflicting brands could be dealt with in a few years after this industry turmoil has passed, one of these people added.

Another concern raised by analysts and other observers regards the addition of 3,500 Chrysler dealers into GM's already over-dealered network.

One person told the Free Press that those "excess dealers" would cost GM nothing in the short-term and that some -- if not many -- will fail on their own anyway.

GM, Chrysler executives want deal by Nov. 4: report

Oct. 19, 2008

Executives at General Motors Corp. and Chrysler LLC are pushing for a rapid deal before both automakers are weakened further by the financial crisis and before the presidential election on Nov. 4, when candidates might be more amenable to requests for help, say sources familiar with the situation, The Detroit News reported.
Cerberus Capital Management LP founder Stephen Feinberg, a driving force behind the negotiations to combine General Motors Corp. and Chrysler LLC, is pushing for a rapid deal as are GM President Frederick Henderson and Vice Chairman Bob Lutz, the sources said. The parties met Friday, but Feinberg was not directly involved with the talks. The negotiations have been complicated by the disclosure last week that they were taking place even though they were at a preliminary stage, the newspaper report Saturday.
Cerberus and GM declined to comment, the report added.
