Thumbs down Engine Shortage Ceases Production

Chrysler suffers parts shortage, closes factory
A lack of Pentastar engines will cease production at Windsor Assembly Plant for three days

A parts shortage will briefly close the Windsor Assembly Plant in Windsor, Ont., where Chrysler builds one of its staples; the minivan.

Chrysler's Pentastar engine is the vital part in short supply. It's used in several Chrysler makes and models, including the company's minivan. But there currently are not enough to go around, the CAW said.

"It's bothersome," said CAW Local 444 president Rick Laporte. "We just worked last Saturday. It just doesn't make much sense to me that we work Saturday and then following week we're down, not building cars."

Approximately 5,000 employees will work four-hour shifts Thursday. The plant will then cease production until at least next Wednesday. Laporte said the assembly plant will lose at least three full days of production but there is no guarantee when full production will resume.

Hourly, unionized Chrysler employees will still receive 65 per cent of their pay while they're off the job.

But Laporte says the situation is worse for employees at smaller supplier plants, some of which are also in the Windsor-Essex area.

"When we go down like this, it's our feeder plants, our supplier plants, who are the lowest worker on the totem pole, (who) get nothing," Laporte said.

Chrysler Group LLC to Recall Small Quantity of Vehicles Equipped with V-6 Engines

September 29, 2011

Chrysler Group LLC is conducting a voluntary safety recall of 657 Chrysler 200 and Town & Country, Dodge Journey, Durango, Grand Caravan and Jeep® Grand Cherokee vehicles equipped with a 3.6-liter V-6 engine. The affected vehicles may exhibit loss of engine power caused by debris from the manufacturing machining processes.

“The condition was caught early at the plant during a scheduled audit and only 657 potentially affected vehicles were delivered to dealers, the majority of which have not been sold,” said David Dillon, Head of Product Investigations and Campaigns.

The Company is not aware of any actual failures in customer’s hands, injuries or property damage related to this issue. Chrysler Group LLC will replace the engines for all affected vehicles. This will be completed at no cost to the consumer or dealer.

All 657 potentially affected vehicles were sold in the United States.

Chrysler Group LLC will begin sending letters to approximately 150 retail and fleet customers in October for a no-charge repair.
