Expanding on the style, efficiency and driving enjoyment that has made the Fiat 500 an icon for nearly 57 years, the all-new 2014 Fiat 500L expands the Cinquecento’s appeal by offering 42 percent extra interior space with comfortable seating for five, engaging driving dynamics and a 160-horsepower 1.4-liter MultiAir Turbo engine with two fuel-saving, six-speed transmissions. All this comfort and technology is wrapped in contemporary Italian design with a starting U.S. Manufacturer’s Suggested Retail Price (MSRP) of $19,100 (plus $800 destination).

Fiat employee vandalises 31 500L models

Factory worker scrawls rude and abusive message into Fiat 500L body panels

A factory worker at Fiat’s Serbian production plant has vandalised 31 part-built examples of the Italian firm’s 500L compact people carrier.

The member of staff at the Kragujevac works reportedly used a screwdriver to scratch offensives messages riddled with expletives into the newly painted body panels.

According to Left Lane News, it’s not yet known what the graffiti says, but it’s thought that the angry messages were aimed at the factory’s production bosses.

The Fiat 500L was originally meant to be produced at the firm’s Italian plant in Turin. However, tension between the company and its workers meant the manufacture of the car was moved to Eastern Europe.

It appears that unrest between the labour and management is still rife, despite the reconsidered location. The plant’s employees have claimed that recent parts shortages have delayed production, with the staff forced to work long hours without breaks to make up the lost build time when the supply of components resumed.

In an interview with Croatian newspaper ‘Istinito’, trade union president of Fiat Automobili Serbia, Zoran Mihajlovic, highlighted:

“It is believed that a single man damaged the cars because the message’s handwriting is the same. This is probably due to tough conditions under which the workers operate, the younger ones can bear it but it is very difficult for the older ones.

“They work in three shifts, under great pressure from management, and the average monthly wage is 34,000 dinars [around £265].”

Fiat has launched an internal investigation with the help of CCTV footage to track down the culprit responsible for the protest. The 31 500Ls will all now have to be repainted.

MultiAir
The high-performance 1.4-liter MultiAir Turbo engine features FIAT’s exclusive MultiAir intake valve technology. Unlike engines that rely on direct action from fixed lobes on the camshaft to control intake valve opening and closing, MultiAir is an electro-hydraulic system that can control intake air, cylinder by cylinder and stroke by stroke, depending on the precise operating conditions and the demands from the driver and engine control system. MultiAir technology on normally aspirated 1.4-liter engines provides up to a 15 percent increase in low engine rpm torque, up to 7.5 percent improvement in fuel efficiency and a 7.5 percent reduction in carbon dioxide emissions.

All-new Uconnect 5.0 and 6.5
The all-new FIAT 500L uniquely showcases Uconnect’s distinctive handling of in-vehicle handsfree communication, entertainment and navigation.

The all-new Uconnect 5.0 system features a 5-inch touchscreen that enables handsfree calling via Bluetooth-equipped phones, as well as voice-command control of AM/FM, along with optional SiriusXM Radio, USB media port and navigation system. The MONOPOLY® Game at McDonald’s® is set to return this summer, and for the second year the FIAT brand is participating in the event. The FIAT brand is offering game players a chance to win one of three different Fiat 500 models including the all-new Fiat 500L, 500 Hatchback, and 500 Cabrio. The Game is in restaurants July 16 and continues in-stores until August 12 and online at 2013 MONOPOLY Game at McDonald's® Online Game until 11:59:59 p.m. ET on August 26, 2013.

Participants have two ways to enter to win a Fiat 500 vehicle:

• In-restaurants: The 2013 MONOPOLY® Game at McDonald’s® is available at participating McDonald’s restaurants starting July 16 through August 12, or while supplies last. Players can peel Game Pieces from select menu items to instantly win one of ten Fiat 500 vehicles or collect property sets for a chance to win one of fifteen Fiat 500 vehicles, cash prizes up to $1 million (payable $50,000/yr for 20 yrs, without interest) and many other exciting prizes.
