Fiat 500 adopts Ford Ka's set-up

Fiat 500 adopts Ford Ka's set-up

17 May 2010

The Fiat 500 now has a rear anti-roll bar that is 30 per cent stiffer than the original unit, after the Italian manufacturer adopted the settings developed for the Ford Ka.

The Ford Ka went on sale after the Fiat 500, using the same 500/Panda platform with a Ford-designed body and Ford-tuned mechanicals.

Fiat initially used the Ford developed set-up on its Abarth badged derivatives of the 500, but has subsequently adopted it for standard 500s.

Fiat 600 (4-door)?

Report: Fiat 500 four-door to be badged as Fiat 600
May 18, 2010

The Fiat 500 will be available in North America with a 1.4L Multiair engine in the fourth quarter of 2010. It will be built in Mexico starting December 2010. A 1.4L Multiair turbo is expected to arrive in the fourth-quarter of 2011.

Following those models, Chrysler Group LLC and Fiat SpA have promised that they will offer the North American market a pure electric version of the Fiat 500 in 2012.

We’ve previously heard reports of a four-door version of the 500, which is scheduled to arrive in Europe at the end of 2011. The four-door 500 is also expected to be sold in North America.

Sources are saying that the four-door model will most likely be called the Fiat 600 and will be built alongside the 500 in Toluca, Mexico. Power is rumored to come from the 500’s 4-cylinder engine range.

Abarth Fiat 500 Spider

Abarth Fiat 500 Spider

Thursday, June 24, 2010

According to various sources, Fiat is working on another open top version of the 500 - the Abarth Fiat 500 Spider. The Abarth Fiat 500 Spider will be a two-seater roadster that will be powered by a 1.4-liter turbo engine developing around 180 hp. The top speed of the new Abarth Fiat 500 Spider two-seater will be around the 140 mph and early speculations say it will be able to accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in less than 7 seconds.

The engine of the Abarth Fiat 500 Spider will send its power to the wheels via an automated manual gearbox with steering wheel mounted paddle shifters.

For good handling in the corners, the Abarth Fiat 500 Spider might get the same suspensions tweaks as the Esseesse version of the 500. apart from the new suspension, the Abarth Fiat 500 Spider will also get an upgraded set of brakes, a new sport exhaust and a rear diffuser. The interior of the Abarth Fiat 500 Spider will benefit from new bucket seats and new seatbelts.

The Abarth Fiat 500 Spider price is expected to fall in the 20,000 GBP category when it will hit the market in 2012.

First Drive: 2010 Fiat 500C Abarth
A Yappy Pedigreed Chihuahua with a Rollback Roof

June 30, 2010

First, the back story. Fiat, the Big One of the Italian auto industry, owns a large portion of Ferrari, all of Maserati, Alfa Romeo, and Lancia...plus Abarth. Originally founded in the late 1940s by an Austrian, Karl Abarth, the company specialized for decades in making parts that made Fiats faster. The hoods of rear-engined 500 racers from the 1960s were always propped open, usually to make room for stuff from Abarth.

Having acquired Abarth, Fiat has spent the last three years remodelling the brand. It's now established in Europe and beyond as Fiat's specialist partner for tuning kits, ready-to-go race cars, and premium-priced performance models. (Some 22,000 Abarth-branded cars have been sold over that three-year span) The Abarth 500C is the latest addition to the lineup. It gives the full Abarth street-racer treatment to the tiny front-engine cabrio with the roll-back roof.

Sometime after Fiat re-enters the American market early in 2011 with the Mexican-made 500 and 500C, the plan is for Abarth to follow with its versions. Timing? Fiat execs will only say that it will be done by 2013. They're still wrestling with the problem of how to brand the cars, which are shorn of Fiat badges and wear only Abarth identification in Europe. The favored solution, according to one exec, is to tag Abarth onto the end of Fiat's names. If this is the choice that's made, America's future Fiat 500C Abarth is sure to be different from today's Abarth 500C.

Fiat 500 Ferrari Edition By Pogea Racing – The F1 Ladybug

July 1st, 2010

The little bug with Ferrari flavor is brought in major league by Pogea Racing, the standard values of the 1.4-liter turbocharged engine of 165 HP and 230 Nm both received extra 100 – HP and NM – reaching the impressive numbers of 268 HP and 330 Nm, values similar to ones of a VW Golf R. But the big problems are that this car has two-wheel drive and a very short wheelbase. So, some better brakes and a stiffer suspension solving the problems of torque-steering and udersteering only partially.

Fiat 500 TwinAir Video

July 8, 2010

The Italian carmaker has released today the first Fiat 500 TwinAir video after it has unveiled the new, 2-cylinder, version of the popular European mini. The video features both the Fiat 500 TwinAir and its open-top version, the 500C. In case you missed yesterday's unveiling, the Fiat 500 and 500C TwinAir are powered by a new two-cylinder 900 cc turbo engine that develops 85 hp and 145 Nm of torque. The company claims this new unit offers the same performance as the current 1.4 16v engine, but with 30% less fuel. The Fiat 500 TwinAir has a 92 g/km CO2 emissions level and a 4.0 l/100 km fuel consumption in the city. Regardless of these low figures, the Fiat 500 TwinAir can get from 0 to 100 km/h in 11 seconds and up to a top speed of 173 km/h.

A total of 500 of these collector-edition Fiat 500 models will be sold in the United States.

“The Fiat Cinquecento Prima Edizione was developed especially with the Fiat fans in mind,” said Laura Soave, Head of Fiat North America, who personally presented the opportunity to the Fiat aficionados. “For over a quarter of a century, the members of this Club have kept the spirit of the Fiat and Lancia brands alive in North America through their unique and passionate support for true Italian design. We really value their loyalty, and the Prima Edizione is our gift of appreciation to these fans on behalf of Fiat North America.”

Fiat North America will also offer other Fiat fans the opportunity to reserve their Prima Edizione model, up to a limit of 500, via a special website that will be made available at a later date through Fiat 500: Become a Fiat Follower.

Fiat Mobile Experience
The Fiat Cinquecento ‘Prima Edizione’ announcement was made during the national annual convention organized by Club Fiat-Lancia Unlimited, North America’s largest enthusiast club for owners of Fiat Group Automobile vehicles. This year, the convention – commonly known as the “Fiat Freakout” – was held in Asheville, NC.

Fiat North America was the title sponsor of the annual convention, which featured displays of more than 100 well-preserved Fiat, Lancia and Alfa Romeo vehicles.

During the event, Fiat North America debuted the ‘Fiat Mobile Experience’ – a unique display that hosts both a café station and a Fiat brand merchandise store.

Fiat fans attending the convention were able to enjoy complimentary gelato, espresso and cappuccino served by baristas. Visitors were also able to browse through and purchase various Fiat-branded merchandise items in a unique store area, finished in Fiat red and white colors and staffed by Fiat merchandizing specialists.

The Fiat Mobile Experience display is constructed from a repurposed auto-shipping container and will be seen at other future Fiat shows and exhibitions in North America.

The Little 57-mpg Engine That Could

* July 12, 2010

Ever-tighter fuel economy and emissions regs, not to mention changing consumer tastes, have automakers doing more with less. We’re seeing a resurgence in compacts and subcompacts, and automakers are putting smaller, more efficient engines in many models. But Fiat is taking it to a whole ‘nother level by putting a tiny two-cylinder engine in the adorable 500.

Fiat says the TwinAir 875cc will be the world’s most fuel-efficient gasoline automobile engine — getting 57.4 mpg — when it appears in the 500 this fall. It meets Euro 5 emission regs and will allow Fiat to retain its position as the European automaker with the lowest overall fleet CO2 emissions.

“We have no intention of relinquishing our crown of Europe’s greenest automaker and the TwinAir engine will have a crucial role in maintaining our lead,” Alfredo Altavilla, Fiat vice president for business development, told Automotive News Europe.

It also brings the 500 closer to its roots, because the original Cinquecento used a two-cylinder engine, as did other microcars in post-war Europe. But don’t think Fiat’s gone all retro with the tiny engine. It’s thoroughly modern, and it sounds like an impressive bit of kit.

The parallel twin uses four valves per cylinder. Electro-hydraulic intake valves with variable timing in place of a conventional camshaft allow more precise combustion, increasing fuel economy and torque. Fitted with a tiny turbocharger, the TwinAir produces 85 horsepower and 106 pound feet of torque. An “eco” mode cuts that to 73 pound feet to boost fuel economy further. The engine also has stop-start technology.

Auto Express spent some time behind the wheel of a TwinAir 500 and came away impressed. The engine feels a lot like a four-banger below 2,500 RPM and has good pull in part because the transmission has short gearing. Wind the little engine that could up and it sounds like a motorcycle — not at all surprising, given the engine is actually smaller than those in many bikes. A counterbalancer keeps things smooth, and Auto Express says the TwinAir performs a lot like a 1.4-liter four.

Fiat says the TwinAir will do zero to 100 km/hr in 11 seconds and top out at 107 mph.

Bolted to a semi-auto gearbox, the engine delivers a Prius-like 57.4 mpg and emits 92 g/km of CO2. The five-speed drops the figures to 54 mpg and 95 g/km, according to ANE. Fiat also will offer a non-turbo model good for 65 horsepower and a tuned turbo version good for 115.

A TwinAir 500 will go for $16,775 in Italy. No word on whether the engine will make it to this side of the Atlantic when the 500 arrives at the end of the year. The company also is planning a mild-hybrid drivetrain using the engine.

Isn’t it cute? TwinAir, by the numbers: One turbocharger, two cylinders, eight valves, 85 horsepower and 106 pound feet. And it gets 57.8 mpg.
