Cool Jeep Wrangler Demand Very High

Sunday, November 20, 2011

Chrysler races to meet demand for iconic SUV

Jeep Wranglers are lined up at Chrysler's Toledo North Assembly plant.

As Chrysler Group LLC CEO Sergio Marchionne announced a $500 million investment last week to retool the Toledo Assembly complex's Liberty production line for the next generation Jeep-brand sport utility vehicle, a neighboring plant's line buzzed with activity, as it does 20 hours a day, six days a week.

Even at that fever pitch, the automaker can barely build enough Jeep Wranglers to keep up with demand. It means that while Chrysler is publicly focused on the Liberty plant -- amid much fanfare last week -- capacity concerns to meet expected and planned-for demand worldwide for the Wrangler could result either in another upgrade to Toledo Assembly or a decision to make more of those sport utility vehicles in a Chrysler factory elsewhere.

To deal with demand in the short term, the United Auto Workers union has agreed to work four days next month in the normal shutdown week between Christmas and New Year's Day, the first time UAW Jeep unit Chairman Dan Henneman can recall that happening in his 28 years.

"My plant will do it," he said. "It's just a matter of whether the suppliers can keep us supplied."

U.S. sales of the iconic Wrangler have set monthly records in each of the last five months, and the 14,500 dealer orders placed in the first 10 days of November already have surpassed the number of vehicles built there in three of the last four months. The plant also is nearing what union officials identify as its production capacity.

"To me, this is going to be one of the biggest months we've ever had that we can remember," said Mr. Henneman.

A Chrysler spokesman declined to assign a production capacity number for the plants, but Mr. Henneman said the Wrangler plant's two shifts of workers are producing about 630 vehicles a day. They would struggle to build more, he said.

The success of the vehicle that dates to World War II and of a relatively new four-door version grabbing public attention was bolstered this fall with a new, more fuel-efficient engine.

Through October, production of the Wrangler line -- from two-door soft-tops to top-of-the-line four-door Unlimited models -- was 135,072 units, up about 11 percent from last year. But American buyers have scooped up the vehicle with a fervor not seen before.

July was the best sales month ever for the Wrangler, with 14,335 units sold. In all, Chrysler has sold a total of 101,820 Wrangler and Wrangler Unlimited models through October, a 28 percent increase over last year.

Demand also has increased in other countries. The company has sold 36,164 Wranglers outside the United States through October, up 15 percent from last year. That was driven largely by Canadian sales, up 42 percent from 2010.

Some of this year's sales are attributable to the addition of the more powerful and fuel-efficient 3.6-liter Pentastar V6 engine for the 2012 model year.

The engine, long a star in the Chrysler stable, bumped the Wrangler's horsepower rating to 285 from 202, something dealers say was especially appealing to many buyers.

"We've had customers that specifically put the vehicle on their shopping list as a result of the new motor," said Doug Kearns, general manager at the Yark Automotive Group, which has a Jeep dealership on Central Avenue in Sylvania Township.

But with Chrysler's commitment to push international sales of the Wrangler using Fiat SpA's established dealer network, there's an expectation by many that the current demand won't wane once the glamour of a new power plant wears off.

How that will be addressed by Chrysler is uncertain.

Union officials say that adding a third shift to the plant isn't feasible because the idle time is needed for preventive maintenance.

Adding a Sunday shift has been done on occasion in the past and could be a possibility for building a few more vehicles if demand continues at its current level, they said.

Whether Chrysler would consider building an addition to the body shop or upgrading equipment -- both costly propositions -- is unknown.

"My guess would be they're trying to figure out if this is a longer-term problem or a short-term one," said Bruce Baumhower, UAW Local 12 president. "I'm thinking long term when they tell you they're going to be exporting worldwide. It's a great problem to have."

Jodi Tinson, a Chrysler spokesman, declined to comment on any future considerations to increase capacity at the plant.

Tracy Handler, an analyst with IHS Automotive in suburban Detroit, said her firm does not expect to see the domestic sales growth of the last year continue, although it does expect an uptick in foreign sales. She expects the plant will be able to meet demand in its current configuration and does not expect Chrysler to invest in upgrades for the Toledo plant.

One thing remains certain for now, however: Chrysler's leadership does not intend to build the Wrangler anywhere but Toledo.

"This plant has been at the heart of what we've done," Mr. Marchionne said after Wednesday's announcement. "I've said it publicly that I would never build the Wrangler outside the U.S. and outside of Toledo. These are things that are unthinkable, that we would assemble a Wrangler somewhere else."

Sales growth hasn't been limited to the Wrangler. U.S. Jeep-brand sales are up 25 percent over last year, with every model posting an increase in sales. Overall, U.S. sales for Chrysler over the year's first 10 months have increased 23 percent.

December 1, 2011 , Auburn Hills, Mich. - The new 2012 Jeep® Wrangler Rubicon – the most capable production vehicle on the planet – has been named “Four Wheeler of the Year” by Four Wheeler magazine. The award is given annually by the editors of the opinion-leading off-road enthusiast magazine.

“The 2012 Jeep Wrangler Rubicon owned nearly all aspects of off-road testing during our annual ‘Four Wheeler of the Year’ competition,” said Four Wheeler Editor John Cappa. “The grueling 1,000-mile trek put each contending vehicle through its paces in several on- and off-road environments, including high-speed graded roads, jagged rocks, shifting sand dunes, and more. New Wrangler Freedom edition harkens back to Jeep brand’s military roots
Red, White and Blue Wrangler Freedom edition now available in Jeep showrooms

Chrysler Group LLC offers a $500 cash allowance to eligible consumers through its ‘Military Bonus Consumer Cash’ program

Jeep Wrangler sales up 34 percent in 2012 with all-time record in May

June 29, 2012 , Auburn Hills, Mich. - More than 70 years ago, the U.S. government informed automakers that it was looking for a “light reconnaissance vehicle” for military use. Willys-Overland quickly created the Willys Quad – which became the Willys MA and MB – but the Army, and the world, came to know the vehicle that would help win a world war as the Jeep®.

As a tribute to U.S. military members past and present, the Jeep brand has created the new 2012 Jeep Wrangler Freedom edition. Available in red, white or blue, the new Jeep Wrangler Freedom edition features a military-inspired star decal on the hood and rear quarter panels, along with an “Oscar Mike” (military jargon for “on the move”) fender badge.

Jeep will donate $250 from each Wrangler Freedom Edition it sells to charities that benefit U.S. military members. Specifically, funds will be split between the Fisher House Foundation and the I Support Foundation. Fisher House Foundation provides a “home away from home” for military families to be close to a loved one during hospitalization for an illness, disease or injury, while the I Support Foundation provides resources to troops returning home – such as jobs and various healthcare needs – and issues grants to 40 charities that provide valuable services to U.S. veterans.

“The Jeep brand has a long, renowned history that began with its significant presence and success within the U.S. military,” said Mike Manley, President and CEO – Jeep Brand, Chrysler Group LLC. “Jeep – and particularly the Wrangler – is the icon for capability and durability, and is a true symbol of American freedom. The new Jeep Wrangler Freedom Edition is created in honor of Jeep’s one-of-a-kind history, and as a tribute to all of the brave men and women who have and continue to serve in the U.S. military.

“It is with both pride in our history and gratitude to all those who have served that we have chosen to donate $250 from each Jeep Wrangler Freedom Edition to be divided between these important charitable organizations that benefit current and returning military members,” Manley added.

Chrysler Group LLC also offers a $500 cash allowance to military members that may be applied toward the retail purchase or lease of an eligible Chrysler, Jeep, Dodge, Ram Truck or FIAT vehicle. Eligible consumers include active military, active military reserve, retired military (honorable discharge and 20 years of service required), and retired military reserve (honorable discharge and 20 years of service required).

The new 2012 Wrangler Freedom edition is now available in Jeep showrooms.

2012 Jeep Wrangler Freedom Edition

The new limited-edition 2012 Jeep Wrangler Freedom model is based on the best-selling Sport model, and is available as a two-door Wrangler or four-door Wrangler Unlimited model. It is offered in three colors only: Deep Cherry Red, Bright White, and new True Blue that for 2012 is exclusive to the Wrangler Freedom edition model.

Jeep Wrangler Freedom edition exterior features include unique Mineral Gray-painted 17-inch alloy wheels borrowed from the Wrangler Rubicon, Mineral Gray-painted grille and front and rear bumper inserts, body-color wheel arches and side steps, prominent “Oscar Mike” star-in-circle fender badges and decals on the hood and rear quarter panels, black sidesteps with matching black tail lamp guards and a Mopar fuel fill door, and a Sunrider soft top with deep-tint rear windows.

Interior treatments on the new 2012 Jeep Wrangler Freedom edition include black seats with rugged tectonic fabric, an “Oscar Mike” logo embroidered on the seat backs in silver stitching, French Silver accent stitching on the steering wheel, doors, seats and front arm rest, and “Quick Silver” accents on the front passenger grab handle, door pulls and dash vent rings. Finishing touches include Satin Chrome spokes on the leather-wrapped steering wheel and Mopar Slush Mats.

Other standard features include power windows and locks, remote keyless entry, a leather-wrapped steering wheel with audio controls, and UConnect® voice command and connectivity group.

The 2012 Jeep Wrangler Freedom edition will be available at a Manufacturer’s Suggested Retail price of $28,165 for Wrangler two-door models and $30,670 for Wrangler Unlimited four-door models.

Award-winning 3.6-liter V-6 engine provides efficiency up to 21 miles per gallon, while delivering 285 horsepower and 260 lb.-ft. of torque
New wheel designs distinguish Wrangler Sahara and Rubicon models

September 1, 2012 , Auburn Hills, Mich. -

For the 2013 model year, engineers for the Jeep® Wrangler – the most capable and recognized vehicle in the world – focused their attention on interior ergonomics and 4x4 capability. The goal was the make Wrangler even more enjoyable and comfortable on a daily basis from the inside out while continuing to improve its off-road ability.

With the introduction of an all-new powertrain for 2012, Jeep Wrangler features dramatically improved on-road performance combined with even more off-road prowess. Now, with new features added to the interior, the 2013 Wrangler adds improved comfort to its long list of benefits. The result is an untouched level of capability off-road, combined with on-road dynamics, fuel efficiency and interior comfort that make Jeep Wrangler the perfect vehicle for fun daily driving, weekend trail-running or extreme off-road wheeling.

Passengers are now greeted by new front and rear seats. Re-contoured and with larger bolsters, these seats are comfortable for long drives while offering more support for sporting off-road activities. Wrangler Unlimited models get a new release handle for the rear seat fold-down function. This lever allows the seats to be folded with one hand for greater convenience.

Interior courtesy lighting is now found under the instrument panel as well as the cup holder areas for front and rear passengers. An auto-dimming electro chromatic mirror is standard on all models and will feature LED map lights for front passengers.

A new Alpine premium speaker system is available for standard and navigation-equipped audio systems, and an optional premium Tire Pressure Monitor system can give the direct read-outs for each individual tire.

Jeep Wrangler offers many options for top configurations from soft to body-color three-piece hard tops. New for 2013 is a revised soft top on Unlimited models that is easier to raise and lower, especially when operated by one person.

Another highlight is the addition of a premium soft top. Available on all models, the new, premium soft top uses an easier to clean, upscale material. Consisting of three layers, the new top also helps reduce interior noise and is easier to fasten.

Both Wrangler Rubicon and Sahara models receive new wheel designs. Rubicon models now have an aggressive 17-inch 10-hole alloy wheel with polished accents and a mid-gloss gray painted inner face running 255/75R17 BFG Mud Terrain tires; Sahara models feature an 18-inch five-hole alloy wheel with a polished lip and sparkle silver painted inner face and 255/70R18 Bridgestone Dueler tires.

Dual windshield washer nozzles are now standard and help clear away mud and dirt from the windshield more thoroughly.

One of Jeep Wrangler’s trademarks is its broad color palate, and this holds true for the 2013 model year. New exterior colors include True Blue Pearl, Billet Silver, Rock Lobster, Commando (green), and with late availability, Rugged Brown and Dune. Black, Bright White, Dozer, Deep Cherry Red, Gecko and Crush continue from 2012.

To kick off the 2013 model year, Jeep Wrangler will debut a limited edition model named after one of the most popular off-road destinations in the world, Moab, Utah. The Jeep Wrangler Moab edition is based on the Sahara model and will be equipped with hardware popular with off-roading enthusiasts.

Official upgrades include 17-inch Rubicon alloy wheels painted gloss black running new 245/75R17 Goodyear Silent Armor off-road tires. Wrangler Moab comes standard with the Trak-Lok anti-spin rear differential with an available electronic rear locking differential. When equipped with a manual transmission and a 3.73 rear axle ratio, Wrangler Moab has a crawl ratio of 45:1.

Unique exterior features on the Wrangler Moab include a Mopar power dome hood, premium rock rails, black fuel filler door and tail lamp guards and matching premium black front and rear off-road bumpers. Other exterior touches include the new premium soft top, black wheel arches, a matte black Jeep grille badge and “Moab” decals on the hood. A body-color three-piece hard top is optional.

Interior modifications include black or saddle premium leather seats with black stitching, “Moab” embossed instrument panel grab handle, Mopar slush mats and Iron Gray trim on the vent rings, grab handles and steering wheel spokes.

The Jeep Wrangler Moab will be available as a two-door Wrangler or Wrangler Unlimited model and available in Crush, Dozer, Rock Lobster, Gecko, Black and Bright White.

Engineering
The 2013 Jeep Wrangler delivers unmatched off-road capability with legendary four-wheel drive and is produced with more than seven decades of 4x4 engineering experience. Wrangler continues to offer a body-on-frame design, front and rear five-link suspension system, live axles, electronic lockers, and is one of the few mid-size SUVs that offers a six-speed manual transmission – in addition to its five-speed automatic transmission.

The Jeep Wrangler is available with several axle gear ratios allowing customers to optimize fuel economy and/or vehicle capability. Wrangler is available with 3.21, 3.73 or 4.10 ratios depending on model. Also, Wrangler offers towing capability up to 3,500 lbs.

A best-in-class approach angle of 44.3 degrees, breakover angle of 25.5 degrees and departure angle of 40.4 degrees, helps the Jeep Wrangler scale the toughest terrain.

The capable driveline of the Sport and Sahara models include a Dana 30 front axle and Dana
44 rear axle. The Command-Trac® NV241, part-time, two-speed transfer case, features a 2.72:1 low-range gear ratio. In addition, an optional Trac-Lok® limited-slip rear differential provides extra torque and grip in low-traction environments such as sand, mud or snow.

The Wrangler Rubicon model features heavy-duty Dana 44 front and rear axles and the Rock-Trac® NV241 two-speed transfer case with a 4.0:1 low-range gear ratio. Rubicon also includes electric front and rear locking differentials, disconnecting front sway bar and 32-inch tires, taking the Wrangler to the highest level of capability.

Design
The interior to Wrangler combines rich styling, versatility, comfort and intuitive feature use. Highlights include automatic temperature controls, heated premium leather seats, power mirrors and steering wheel controls for vehicle systems. Large rear windows are engineered for greater visibility. A USB port connects to the media center, 12-volt accessory outlets are located throughout the Wrangler and a 115-volt AC outlet is available to power select three-pronged home electronics.

The Jeep Wrangler’s signature features include classic round headlamps, seven-slot grille, trapezoid wheel flares, removable doors, exposed hinges, a fold-down windshield and innovative removable and convertible tops and half doors that allow the Wrangler to retain the brand’s iconic appearance and function. Wrangler Rubicon and Sahara models share a body-color hardtop option, offering a premium appearance.

With room for five adults, Jeep Wrangler Unlimited remains the only four-door 4x4 convertible on the market.

Safety, Security, and Connectivity
The 2013 Jeep Wrangler and Wrangler Unlimited are available with an array of safety and security technology features. Standard electronic stability control, electronic roll mitigation, Trailer-sway Control, Hill-start Assist and brake traction control are among two dozen available safety and security features. Jeep safety systems are engineered to improve handling and accident avoidance while providing occupant protection, allowing Jeep Wrangler customers the ability to safely "go anywhere and do anything."

Jeep Wrangler stays connected with Uconnect systems, including voice recognition, Bluetooth® streaming audio, navigation and SiriusXM Satellite Radio. The Wrangler’s connectivity systems have improved ergonomics by giving the driver control at their fingertips. Intuitive buttons on the front and rear of the steering wheel control a number of features allowing the driver to keep hands on the wheel and eyes on the road.

Manufacturing
The 2013 Jeep Wrangler and Jeep Wrangler Unlimited are built in the Toledo Supplier Park in Toledo, Ohio.

Limited-production Jeep Wrangler Rubicon 10th Anniversary Edition to arrive in showrooms in spring of 2013

November 28, 2012 , LOS ANGELES - For more than seven decades, Jeep® vehicles have defined the benchmark in rugged capability and utility. The most recognized of these vehicles has long been and still is the Jeep Wrangler, which has always provided an unmatched level of freedom resulting from the ability to traverse any trail, anywhere.

Ten years ago, for the 2003 model year, Jeep dramatically raised the bar in off-road capability with the introduction of the Wrangler Rubicon model. Named after one of the most grueling off-road trails in the world, the Rubicon models were the most extreme Wranglers ever produced. The 2005 model year saw the introduction of the Wrangler Rubicon Unlimited that brought more utility to the Rubicon’s quickly established off-road credentials. Over the last 10 years, the Wrangler Rubicon has won numerous prestigious awards including Four Wheeler magazine’s “4x4 of the Decade” honor for its unmatched level of all-around capabilities.

Fast forward to the 2013 model year, with Jeep Wrangler setting sales records and the wildly popular Jeep Wrangler Rubicon turning 10 years young. To celebrate, Jeep is introducing a new, limited-production 2013 Wrangler Rubicon 10th Anniversary Edition. It is the most capable factory-produced Jeep Wrangler ever, packed with equipment die-hard off-road enthusiasts love.

“The Jeep Wrangler Rubicon 10th Anniversary Edition is a tribute to 10 years of Wrangler Rubicon history, and to the Jeep brand’s most passionate enthusiasts,” said Mike Manley, President and CEO – Jeep Brand, Chrysler Group LLC. “This Wrangler Rubicon is for them. It is a unique vehicle that we expect will long be sought after, a Wrangler that offers an unprecedented level of capability once only attainable by long hours of custom aftermarket preparation crafted in the garages of the most avid Jeep enthusiasts in the world.

“Now, to celebrate the Wrangler Rubicon’s 10th Anniversary, Jeep has created a stunning new example of the Wrangler, available with a striking red leather interior, and a host of standard off-road equipment seen for the first time on a production vehicle,” Manley added.

The 2013 Jeep Wrangler Rubicion 10th Anniversary edition will arrive in showrooms in the spring of 2013.

Jeep Wrangler Rubicon 10th Anniversary Edition

Available as a two-door Wrangler or four-door Wrangler Unlimited, the Rubicon 10th Anniversary Edition is the most capable Wrangler ever produced. Based on the Rubicon model, it is available with a standard six-speed manual or available five-speed automatic transmission mated to a Pentastar 3.6-liter V-6 engine producing 285 horsepower and 260 ft.-lbs. of torque. The Jeep part-time four-wheel-drive system has electronic-locking front and rear Dana 44 axles that receive power through a Rock-Trac transfer case with a “4-Low” ratio of 4:1. A 4.10 axle ratio front and rear is also standard as are Tru-Lok locking differentials. With a six-speed manual transmission, the Wrangler Rubicon 10th Anniversary Edition has an impressive crawl ratio of 73.1:1 that makes it a breeze to negotiate any obstacle.

The Jeep Wrangler Rubicon 10th Anniversary Edition has many exclusive features that make it distinctive, as well as the most off-road capable Wrangler in history. A one-half inch increase in ride height versus the standard Rubicon model provides the BF Goodrich KM2 265/70R17 tires more room to claw at rugged terrain. The tires are mounted on 17-inch Rubicon aluminum wheels painted satin black with polished faces and a red Jeep Wrangler “icon” logo on the outside lip.

Black front and rear steel off-road bumpers toughen up the exterior, with the front bumper featuring removable end caps and a winch-capable design. These removable end caps help the Wrangler climb obstacles without hindrance, and reduce the damage potential to the bumper system. A dual-intake Power Dome hood helps aid in engine cooling and gives Wrangler a more menacing appearance. Red tow hooks adorn the front and rear, and Mopar rock rails give added protection from trail damage. Mopar also supplies the black fuel filler door and tail lamp guards. “10th Anniversary” badging on the fenders and a red-silhouette “Rubicon” decal on the sides of the hood add the finishing touches on the exterior.

The Wrangler Rubicon 10th Anniversary Edition comes standard with a Premium Sunrider soft top and is available with a black three-piece Freedom hard top or body-color hard top. Available exterior colors for the Wrangler Rubicon 10th Anniversary Edition are Billet Silver, White and 10th Anniversary Edition-exclusive Anvil.

The interior has many special touches as well. Striking red leather seats with “Rubicon 10th Anniversary” embroidered into the front seat backs grab attention at first glance. Red stitching adorns the leather-wrapped steering wheel and the center console. A unique gauge cluster features a “10th Anniversary” signature and also features a premium Electronic Vehicle Information Center (EVIC) with various read-outs such as oil pressure, oil temperature and tire pressure. The passenger grab handle includes a “Rubicon 10th Anniversary” badge and features Quick Silver accents that are also found on the vent rings, steering wheel spokes and door pulls.

Final design touches include Mopar slush mats, unique axle locker and sway-bar disconnect switches and a plaque mounted in the dash tray that features the vehicle’s technical data, such as axle type and ratio, tire size, transfer case crawl ratio and manufacturer location.
