Mopar Driver Allen Johnson ‘In the Hunt’

Team Mopar® Driver Allen Johnson ‘In the Hunt’ Heading into Dallas

Auburn Hills, Mich. , Sep 23, 2010 -

Allen Johnson’s championship hopes took a hit at the NHRA stop last weekend at zMAX Dragway in Concord, N.C., with Johnson falling from second to fifth in the Countdown to the Championship Pro Stock playoffs. The Mopar® Dodge Avenger pilot is focused on making up the ground he lost in his title quest at the O’Reilly Auto Parts Super Start Batteries NHRA Fall Nationals, scheduled to take place Sept. 23–26 near Dallas, Texas.

“I’m fired up to go into Dallas and begin to climb back into the title hunt,” said Johnson, a native of Greeneville, Tenn. “There are still four races left in the Countdown to the Championship playoffs, and that’s more than enough time to close the gap between us and Mike (Edwards, the current Pro Stock points leader).”

Johnson cites two reasons he feels optimistic about his chances in the Pro Stock championship fight: the skill of his J&J Racing team and the power of the Mopar HEMI® engine under the hood of his Mopar Dodge.

“The way the J&J Racing team has been preparing the Mopar Dodge Avenger all year, we’ve qualified at or near the top of the field in almost every event,” said Johnson, who has captured a career-high four No. 1 Qualifier Awards already this season. “Dad (Roy Johnson, Allen’s father and engine builder) continues to make tons of horsepower with our Mopar HEMI engines. You can’t count us out.

“I’m only about 30 more points out than what I was heading into last weekend. The way the whole deal worked, with Mike getting knocked out early, I’m still in the hunt. All I need is one good race, and I can be right back in it.”

Mopar parts are unique in that they are engineered with the same teams that create factory-authorized vehicle specifications for Chrysler, Jeep, Dodge and Ram vehicles—a direct connection that no other aftermarket parts company can provide. A complete list of Mopar accessories and performance parts is available at Mopar - Authentic Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep and Ram Accessories, Service & Parts.

More than 70 Years of Mopar
When Chrysler bought Dodge in 1928, the need for a dedicated parts manufacturer, supplier and distribution system to support the growing enterprise led to the formation of the Chrysler Motor Parts Corporation (CMPC) in 1929.

Mopar (a simple contraction of the words MOtor and PARts) was trademarked for a line of antifreeze products in 1937. It also was widely used as a moniker for the CMPC. The Mopar brand made its mark in the 1960s—the muscle-car era. The Chrysler Corporation built race-ready Dodge and Plymouth “package cars” equipped with special high-performance parts. Mopar carried a line of “special parts” for super-stock drag racers and developed its racing parts division called Mopar Performance Parts to enhance speed and handling for both road and racing use.

Johnson Drives Mopar® Dodge Avenger to No. 1 Spot in Friday Qualifying at Dallas

TEAM MOPAR® QUALIFYING REPORT
2010 NHRA FULL THROTTLE DRAG RACING SERIES
Round 20 of 23
Sept. 24“26
O’Reilly Auto Parts Super Start Batteries NHRA Fall Nationals
Texas Motorplex
Ennis, Texas (Sept. 24, 2010)

“ NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series Pro Stock driver Allen Johnson powered his Mopar® Dodge Avenger to the No. 1 spot after the first two sessions of qualifying today at the O’Reilly Auto Parts Super Start Batteries NHRA Fall Nationals. The Team Mopar veteran earned three bonus points in the Countdown to the Championship playoffs with his Friday performance at Texas Motorplex near Dallas.

Johnson clocked a 6.678-second run at 208.17 mph, the top speed of a first qualifying session marked by scorching track temperatures near 140 degrees. Johnson was No. 6 heading into the second round of qualifying, which was much cooler with track temps hovering around 119 degrees. The Greeneville, Tenn. native promptly rocketed to the top of the qualifying charts with a 6.632/208.04 effort.

We’re very happy. We were probably low in 60-ft, and that’s what we’ve been missing lately, said Johnson, who will attempt to hold his position tomorrow for his fifth No. 1 spot of the season. We’ll take it and run with it. In the first round we were a little hot, and we toned it down. We actually had a breakage, which caused us to be a little off. We made a few changes, and I’ve got a great crew that adapts to the track very well. Hopefully tomorrow we’ll keep adapting a little better and put a little more margin between us and (the No. 2 qualifier).ť

Johnson dropped from second to fifth in the Countdown to the Championship standings after the NHRA stop at Concord, N.C. last weekend. A.J. and his J&J Racing team are intensely focused on making up the lost ground, starting at Dallas.

We know we have to work harder than anybody out here to overcome (last week), said Johnson. Everybody is willing to put in whatever it takes to do that. The encouragement from the fans, from everybody”our fan base probably doubled this week. Family, friends, fans, even NHRA folks have just been phenomenal. Hopefully we can take that and do something with it.

We’re looking forward. We’re going to be solid hopefully every run and gain a bunch of those points back. We’re very focused (coming into Dallas). We’re positive, and we’ve still got this thing in sight. We’ve just got to have a couple of good races.ť

V. Gaines, from Lakewood, Colo., jumped from No. 14 to No. 5 with a 6.662/207.34 mark in his Mopar-powered Dodge Avenger in the second qualifying session.

Mopar® Drag Paks Top Qualifying Charts at Concord

Roy Johnson steered his Mopar Dodge Challenger Drag Pak to the No. 1 Qualifier spot in Stock Eliminator at the O’Reilly Auto Parts NHRA Nationals last weekend.

Mopar® Dodge Challenge Drag Pak drivers made quite the ruckus last weekend at the O’Reilly Auto Parts NHRA Nationals in Concord, N.C., as Mopar Drag Pak racers swept the top four spots in Stock Eliminator qualifying at the event.

Roy Johnson, driving the Mopar Dodge Challenger Drag Pak car given to him as a Christmas gift by his son, Team Mopar Pro Stock driver Allen Johnson, captured the top spot with a 10.145-second pass, 1.405 seconds under index. Roy Johnson was trailed by fellow Mopar Drag Pak drivers Doug Duell, James Beattie Jr. and Brooks Lee, who swept the Nos. 2–4 positions, respectively.

Roy Johnson, who advanced to the semifinals in Stock Eliminator at the NHRA Bristol race, his first event after a nearly 30-year retirement from racing, was knocked out in the second round of eliminations. Duell, Lee and Beattie fell in the opening round.
