Exclamation More Air Bags Recalled

Chrysler now has recalled about 617,000 vehicles with Takata air bags since June. In total

12/12/2014

Washington — Under pressure from federal regulators, Chrysler Group LLC said late Thursday it will expand its recall of vehicles with Takata inflators by another 208,783, the second expansion in a week.

Chrysler now has recalled about 617,000 vehicles with Takata air bags since June. In total, 10 major automakers have now recalled more than 10.7 million vehicles with Takata air bags. Inflators in the Takata bags can explode and shoot metal shrapnel at drivers and passengers. At least four people in Hondas have been killed and 46 injured in the U.S., mostly in high-humidity areas like Florida.

Chrysler will notify owners starting Feb. 8.

The new recall covers passenger air bags in vehicles in five additional high humidity states and three additional U.S. territories, including the 2003-05 Dodge Ram 1500, 2500 and 3500 pickup truck, 2004-05 Dodge Durango, 2005 Chrysler 300, 300C, SRT8 and 2005 Dodge Magnum. Of those, 69,600 were covered by a regional field action announced in June.

Quote:
Initially, the recall announced in June covered vehicles sold or registered in Florida, Hawaii, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands. The expanded regional campaign now also covers vehicles sold or currently registered in Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Hawaii, Louisiana, Mississippi and Texas, and the territories of American Samoa, Guam, Puerto Rico, Saipan and the U.S. Virgin Islands.

Last week, the unit of Fiat Chrysler Automobiles NV said it would recall 149,150 older-model pickups in the expanded areas to address concerns about improper air-bag deployment in other high humidity states, but stopped short of the broader recall demanded by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

Chrysler said is unaware of any injuries or accidents involving the recalled inflators of the type covered by this campaign, nor has a Chrysler Group investigation identified a defect in these components. Further, laboratory tests on nearly 600 such inflators did not result in any failures.

The inflators affected by this campaign differ in design and construction from inflators used by other companies, Chrysler said. “They also benefited from a more robust manufacturing process,” Chrysler said.

Chrysler previously said it was limiting its recall to vehicles sold or registered in high-humidity areas of Florida, Hawaii, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands. NHTSA told Chrysler last month the limitation was unreasonable because Takata said on Nov. 10 that passenger air bag inflators pose a problem in other humid areas. NHTSA said the recall should immediately include southern Georgia, Guam, Saipan, American Samoa and areas along the coast of Alabama, Louisiana, Mississippi and Texas.

In June, Chrysler agreed to recall 371,000 2003-08 Dodge Rams, 2004-08 Dodge Durangos, 2007-08 Chrysler Aspens, 2005-08 Chrysler 300s, 2005-08 Dodge Dakotas and 2006-07 Mitsubishi Raiders. About 109,000 of the vehicles recalled in the last two weeks were originally part of the initial recall announced in June as a a regional field action.

Last week, NHTSA criticized Chrysler’s limited recall.

"Chrysler’s latest recall is insufficient, doesn’t meet our demands, and fails to include all inflators covered by Takata's defect information report,” the agency said in a statement last week. “NHTSA will determine next steps and take appropriate actions to ensure Chrysler acts to protect its customers.”

It’s not clear if Chrysler’s expansion announced late Thursday will meet NHTSA’s concerns.

Ford Motor Co. also agreed to expand its regional recall last week at NHTSA’s urging.

The Dearborn automaker last week said it would expand its regional passenger side air bag recall by 13,000 vehicles at NHTSA's request. The automaker has now recalled 98,000 vehicles with Takata air bags. The expanded recall includes certain 2004-05 Ford Ranger and 2005-06 Ford GTs originally sold or ever registered in Florida, Hawaii, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands. It adds certain ZIP codes with high humidity in Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana, Texas, Guam, Saipan and American Samoa.

Last month, Ford expanded its recall of vehicles with Takata air bags by 25,000 2004-05 Ranger pickup trucks to both passenger and driver air bags after Takata Corp. said the vehicle has similar inflators to a Honda vehicle involved in an incident that killed a pregnant woman in July in Malaysia.

Last month, under government pressure, Chrysler said it would speed notification to owners by Dec. 8 — 11 days ahead of schedule.

Air-bag Inflator (Regional Field Action Expansion)

Statement: Air-bag Inflator (Regional Field Action Expansion)

December 12, 2014 , Auburn Hills, Mich. -

Chrysler Group is expanding an ongoing regional field action with a recall to replace front passenger-side air-bag inflators in an estimated 208,783 older-model vehicles originally purchased or ever registered in seven U.S. states and five territories.

The vehicles are equipped with front passenger-side air-bag inflators from a product family code-named "PSPI." Chrysler Group is unaware of any injuries or accidents involving PSPI inflators of the type covered by this campaign, nor has a Chrysler Group investigation identified a defect in these components. Further, laboratory tests on nearly 600 such inflators did not result in any failures.

The inflators affected by this campaign differ in design and construction from PSPI inflators used by other auto makers. They also benefited from a more robust manufacturing process.

However, at the request of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), Chrysler Group is expanding its replacement action beyond its original scope of Florida, Hawaii, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands.

Affected by this recall are the following vehicles, provided they were purchased, ever registered or still registered in Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Hawaii, Louisiana, Mississippi, Texas and the territories of American Samoa, Guam, Puerto Rico, Saipan and the U.S. Virgin Islands:

2003-2005 Dodge Ram 1500 Pickup
2003-2005 Dodge Ram 2500 Pickup
2003-2005 Dodge Ram 3500 Pickup
2004-2005 Dodge Durango
2005 Chrysler 300, 300C, SRT8
2005 Dodge Magnum
2005 Dodge Dakota Pickup

In compliance with regulations governing recalls, affected customers will be notified beginning Feb. 8. Service will be performed free of charge.

This recall covers an estimated 69,668 vehicles also affected by the initial regional field action. The additional five states and three territories accounts for an incremental gain of approximately 139,115 vehicles.

The regional field action, which remains under way, affects 371,309 older-model vehicles in Florida, Hawaii, the U.S. Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico.

A third similar action also is ongoing. Chrysler Group is replacing passenger-side air-bag inflators from a product-family code-named "SPI," in an estimated 149,150 model-year 2003 pickup trucks registered, ever registered or originally purchased in seven U.S. states and five U.S. territories.

The third action covers 39,409 vehicles also affected by the initial regional field action. Affected customers will be notified beginning Jan. 19.

Chrysler Group has not identified an inflator defect in any of its vehicles. However, the Company is committed -- out of an abundance of caution -- to replacing these components in an estimated total of 617,573 older-model cars, trucks and SUVs.

Statement: Global Air-Bag Inflator Replacement
December 19, 2014 , Auburn Hills, Mich. -

FCA US LLC will replace driver’s-side air-bag inflators in an estimated 3.3 million older-model vehicles worldwide, in an expansion of an ongoing regional field action.

Neither FCA US, nor Takata Corporation, the supplier, has identified a defect in this population of inflators. These components also are distinct from Takata inflators cited in fatalities involving other auto makers.

More than 1,000 laboratory tests have been performed on these components. All deployed as intended, but FCA US continues to study the suspect inflators, which are not used in the Company’s current production vehicles.

Outside of Florida, one of the areas covered by the original action, no FCA US vehicle has been linked to an air-bag deployment of the type that has raised public concern. Nevertheless, the Company is replacing the Takata components tied to that concern.

FCA US is aware of one related injury involving one of its vehicles, an older-model sedan. It occurred in a southern Florida region marked by persistent, high, absolute humidity – a condition believed to be a contributing factor in the air-bag deployments under investigation.

The ongoing action, announced in June, was confined to Florida and three regions with similar climatic conditions – Hawaii, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands. The expansion affects an estimated 2,890,785 vehicles across the U.S.; 258,586 in Canada; 66,436 in Mexico and 99,030 outside the NAFTA region. Covered are certain 2004-2007 vehicles from the following model lines:

Dodge Ram 1500, 2500 and 3500 pickups
Dodge Ram 3500 Chassis Cabs
Dodge Durango and Chrysler Aspen full-size SUVs
Chrysler 300 and Dodge Charger full-size sedans
Dodge Magnum full-size station wagons
Mitsubishi Raider and Dodge Dakota small pickups

Affected customers will be notified and advised when they may schedule service, which will be provided free of charge. Replacement parts will be first distributed in areas marked by persistent, high absolute humidity.

Customers with questions or concerns may call 1-800-853-1403.

Today’s global field action brings to 3,672,770 the estimated number of FCA US vehicles affected worldwide by Takata air-bag inflator replacements.
