Kligerman replaces Keselowski for Bristol race
By NASCAR.COM
August 23, 2011 2:30 PM, EDT

Parker Kligerman will substitute for Penske Racing teammate Brad Keselowski in the organization's No. 22 Nationwide Series car this weekend at Bristol Motor Speedway, the team said Tuesday in a statement.

Keselowski, the reigning Nationwide Series champion, has been held out of Nationwide events since fracturing an ankle and straining his back Aug. 3 in a crash while testing at Road Atlanta. The driver's brakes failed and he hit an unprotected wall at more than 100 mph, and was later airlifted to an area hospital. He is ineligible for this year's title due to the NASCAR rule allowing drivers to accumulate championship points in only one series.

Keselowski, whose two Sprint Cup victories make him a leader for one of the two Chase wild-card berths, has focused exclusively on NASCAR's premier series since the accident. Sam Hornish Jr. filled in for the Nationwide event at Iowa, Kurt Busch substituted and won the race at Watkins Glen, and Jacques Villeneuve piloted the vehicle this past weekend in Montreal.

Bristol will mark the first Nationwide start this season for Kligerman, who is competing full-time on the Camping World Truck circuit. Penske president Tim Cindric said Keselowski's availability for Nationwide events will continue to be monitored on a race-by-race basis.

. A Penske Dodge has finished first, second or third in six of the last 11 Cup races and inside the top 10 in nine of the last 11 races.

. Dodge holds the BMS track qualifying record, set by Ryan Newman in 2003 (14.908 seconds at 128.709 mph).

KESELOWSKI RED HOT

. Brad Keselowski has gained 11 positions in the Sprint Cup driver standings in the last four races. He has posted four consecutive top-10 finishes. He has led laps in five of the last seven races. He has only two finishes outside the top 10 in the last eight races.

. Race 16: Busch dominates at Infineon for first win of season and first road-course victory of his career.

. Race 21: Keselowski, racing with a broken left ankle, earns his second win of the season at Pocono Raceway.

. Race 23: Keselowski up to 12th in Cup Series driver points.

FROM THE ENGINEER “If you’re a driver that likes Bristol, this will be a good week. If you’re a driver that dislikes Bristol, this will likely be a bad week. If you’re an engineer in the Sprint Cup Series, this will be, literally as well as figuratively, a stressful week. Bristol is one of the toughest places in all of racing on components, especially chassis components. You might think engines, transmissions, and rear axles would be at risk for failure here, but actually, they all seem to hold up well. Its suspension components that take the worst beating at this half-mile suspension torture chamber. Drivers sail off into the 30-degree banked corners at speeds in excess of 140 mph and the stress load transmitted through every component in the suspension is mind blowing. Parts like control arms, ball joints, and chassis mounts better be engineered to take a beating this week or you’ll be looking at an early exit from Bristol.” Howard Comstock, Dodge Motorsports Engineering

ODDS AND ENDS

. Brad Keselowski has set Sprint Cup personal bests this season in wins (2), top fives (5) and top 10s (8).

. With his win at Infineon last June, Kurt Busch has now posted a win in Sprint Cup competition 10 consecutive seasons. He has 23 career victories.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS

. Kurt Busch is one of three current Sprint Cup drivers with five wins at Bristol Motor Speedway (Jeff Gordon and Kyle Busch).

. The first Sprint Cup race at BMS was July 30, 1961.

2011 SPRINT CUP SERIES SEASON BEST . Kurt Busch Start: 1st (Kansas, Pocono & Michigan) Finish: 1st (Infineon) . Brad Keselowski Start: 1st (Charlotte) Finish: 1st (Kansas & Pocono) . Robby Gordon Start: 30th (Daytona) Finish: 16th (Daytona)

DODGE QUOTES “That win in the spring race of 2002 was memorable because we were racing our big nemesis (Jimmy Spencer) so close back then. It came down to me and him. He led with about 50 laps to go. We got a little physical, but that’s to be expected at Bristol. We got the lead and went on to win the race, with Jimmy finishing second. There’s been a lot of volleying back and forth during the years since our battles back then, but I’ve publicly said that our issues have made me a stronger person and a better driver. I really do consider him a friend these days.” Kurt Busch, No. 22 Shell/Pennzoil Dodge Charger R/T

“This just might be the strongest car we have in the ‘Double-Deuce’ stable. We completely reworked it heading into this season. It was pretty responsive back in February out in Phoenix. It was actually our backup at Pocono in June. We had to roll it off the trailer and Kurt drove the wheels off of it, winning the pole and finishing second. We have a lot of confidence in this Shell-Pennzoil Dodge and can’t wait to see how strong we can be with it at Bristol this weekend.” Steve Addington, crew chief, No. 22 Dodge, on chassis PRS-738 running this weekend at Bristol

“Bristol is one of those tracks where you always have to be mindful of your pace, where you are on the track and who you are around. But you also have to be looking forward so that you can avoid that wreck that happens half of a straightaway in front of you. Short track racing and restrictor-plate racing are very similar in that you can get caught up in a wreck that you had nothing to do with.” Brad Keselowski, No. 2 Miller Lite Dodge Charger R/T

“As a crew chief you look forward to going to Bristol because you don’t have to worry about aerodynamics or ‘dirty air.’ It’s all about finding mechanical grip and forward bite. If you can do that your driver can be successful. Track position will be important. Running up front should keep you out of trouble and in position for a good finish. Brad loves Bristol and his record reflects that. I’m confident we can go up there and contend for the win. I like where we are in the ‘wild card’ standings, but we’re not out of contention to get ourselves inside the top-10. That’s definitely a goal of ours, but we can’t be overly aggressive in trying to get there.” Paul Wolfe, crew chief, No. 2 Miller Lite Dodge Charger R/T

NNS Race Advance

Food City 250 Bristol Motor Speedway

Friday, Aug. 26, 2011

BRAD KESELOWSKI UPDATE Dodge’s Brad Keselowski will not compete in the NASCAR Nationwide Series event this weekend at Bristol Motor Speedway. He continues to receive treatment for injuries, including a broken left ankle, sustained during a testing accident at Road America. Drivers filling in for the 2010 Nationwide Series champion the last three weeks include Sam Hornish Jr. at Iowa, Kurt Busch at Watkins Glen and Jacques Villeneuve at Montreal. Parker Kligerman will drive the No. 22 Discount Tire/Ruby Tuesday Dodge Challenger this weekend at Bristol Motor Speedway.

DODGE AT BRISTOL MOTOR SPEEDWAY . Dodge has three NASCAR Nationwide Series wins at Bristol Motor Speedway (Ryan Newman – 2005, Kasey Kahne – 2007 and Justin Allgaier – 2010). . Dodge’s last NASCAR Nationwide Series victory at the .533-mile track was at the spring event in 2010. Former Dodge driver Justin Allgaier earned his first career series win, leading 27 laps en route to victory. . Dodge’s Brad Keselowski earned Dodge its last NASCAR Nationwide Series pole position at BMS at the spring event in 2010.

PARKER KLIGERMAN – No. 22 Discount Tire Dodge Challenger R/T Career Stats: Starts: 14 Wins: 0 Top Fives: 0 Top 10s: 2 Poles: 1 Laps Led: 7 Average Start: 17.5 Average Finish: 21.5

PARKER KLIGERMAN AT BRISTOL . Parker Kligerman will be making his second career NASCAR Nationwide start at BMS; he started 43rd and finished ninth in last year’s Food City 250.

FAST FACTS . Four former series champions have driven the No. 22 Discount Tire Dodge Challenger this year. Brad Keselowski (2010 Nationwide champion), Kurt Busch (2004 Sprint Cup champion), Sam Hornish Jr. (2001 Indy Car champion) and Jacques Villeneuve (1997 F1 champion).

DID YOU KNOW? . Two Dodges from Penske Racing started from the front row in last week’s Nationwide Series race at Montreal. Jacques Villeneuve claimed his first Nationwide pole in the No. 22 Dodge Challenger and teammate Alex Tagliani started second in the No. 12 Dodge Challenger.

DODGE IN THE NASCAR NATIONWIDE SERIES . Dodge is fielding two entries in the Nationwide Series this year from the Penske Racing stable. Sam Hornish Jr. joins teammate Brad Keselowski for a limited race schedule.

FROM THE CREW CHIEF . “Racing 750 miles at Bristol (the combined total of the Cup and Nationwide Series races this weekend) is hard on someone that isn’t injured the way Brad is and we all want him to get back to 100% as quickly as possible. We’re all pulling together to make sure we don’t miss a beat in his absence. Parker has already done a great job helping set up the Discount Tire Dodges several times this year when Brad couldn’t make it to practice, including Indianapolis where Brad was able to drive the car to victory. Parker has made a lot of strides as a driver. He had a great race at Bristol last year and I’m excited to work with him. Todd Gordon, crew chief, No. 22 Discount Tire Dodge

FROM THE DRIVER “Make no mistake, this is Brad Keselowski’s seat, but it is a big opportunity for me. It’s not often that drivers get the opportunity to jump into a championship-winning car. Therefore, I look forward to representing Discount Tire as best I can this weekend. Our last race together was Daytona last July and we hope to replicate the success that we had together there (Kligerman qualified second and finished 13th). Bristol is where I got my first top-10 in the Nationwide Series and I think with (crew chief) Todd Gordon and the guys building fast race cars, we can produce similar results. I appreciate Mr. Penske, Brad and everyone at Penske Racing for having the confidence in me to drive the Discount Tire Dodge Challenger at one of my favorite tracks.” Parker Kligerman, No. 22 Discount Tire Dodge Challenger R/T

Kurt Busch trying to win Sprint Cup for his main ‘Dude’ Penske
Thursday, August 25, 2011 | Home - BostonHerald.com | Auto Racing

DALLAS — Kurt Busch remembers the day he met Roger Penske for the first time.

It was at Dallas-Fort Worth Airport. Busch had just finished fourth in the Harrah’s 500 at Texas Motor Speedway. He was 22, a full-time NASCAR Sprint Cup driver for the first time. It was his first top-5 finish. He was on top of the world.

What Penske had to say to him only topped off the day.

"He saw me, said, ’Son, I’m going to keep my eye on you,’." Busch said. "From that moment, there was just that special vibe I had with Roger Penske."

Somehow, that vibe has survived this long.

Busch is famous for his quick temper. Penske is famous for his professionalism. But their two styles have co-existed since 2006, when Penske hired the Las Vegas driver in a move that many people thought would speed Busch’s maturity.

Well, it was a theory, anyway.

In 2009, a testy radio exchange between the two ended with Busch’s "Dude" sign-off: "Oh, 10-4, dude. 10-4."

Penske laughed it off. Everybody in the shop called him Dude the rest of the year.

And he and Busch have remained together, through all sorts of ups and downs. Right now, it’s the downs. Busch, who was in Dallas on Tuesday night for the party announcing the 2012 Texas Motor Speedway schedule, is coming off a pair of DNFs that knocked him from third to eighth in driver points.

He’s still in good shape for a spot in the Chase for the Sprint Cup.

"We’re in the mix. We’re comfortable," he said. "But we still need to run strong."

Busch still needs to clinch a spot to give himself a chance to deliver a Sprint Cup championship to Penske, who has sent a record 11 cars to Victory Lane at the Indianapolis 500 and won a record 11 8IndyCar championships but has not yet fielded a title team in NASCAR.

"It’s the main reason why I came over to Penske Racing," Busch said, "to try to bring him that first championship. It’d be my second one, but most importantly, it’d be his first."

Busch, 33, said Penske is a father figure to him. He had respect for him at the meeting in the airport 10 years ago, and he does today. The "dude" thing was just a moment.

"I went over to him, and I was just in awe," Busch said, remembering that first meeting. "But I had to shake his hand, congratulate him on all of his successes. At the same time, it was more like a job interview."

And here he is, still on the job.

Danica Patrick announces move to NASCAR

08/25/2011

Danica Patrick confirmed today her plans to become a full-time NASCAR driver in 2012, but she made no commitment to next year's Indianapolis 500.

Patrick said she will see how her stock car schedule comes together before making that decision.

Her current Izod IndyCar Series team, Andretti Autosport, released a statement during Patrick's news conference in Phoenix saying the driver and team had mutually agreed to part ways after the current season.

Patrick will drive for JR Motorsports full-time in NASCAR's Nationwide Series next season; she also will run "eight to 10" Sprint Cup Series races with Stewart-Haas Racing, which is owned by former IndyCar driver Tony Stewart.

Patrick, who has made 20 Nationwide starts in the past two seasons, will continue to drive the No. 7 GoDaddy.com Chevrolet; a car number for Sprint Cup hasn't been decided. Robby Gordon's team uses that number presently.

Patrick is expected to make her Sprint Cup debut in next year's Daytona 500, although that has not been settled, she said.

Patrick, 29, is the only woman to have won an IndyCar race, but she said her heart told her it's time to try NASCAR full-time.

"I want to do it," she said.

IndyCar CEO Randy Bernard acknowledged Patrick's powerful fan appeal and her ability to bring new interest to open-wheel racing.

"Danica attracted a fan base that every athlete and sports property in the world would love to have," Bernard said in a statement. "We should give her a great farewell the rest of this season as she opens a new page in her career and wish her continued success with her new direction. "
