ON ATLANTA LOSING A CUP DATE IN 2011
“Things change in racing - the one constant is change, as they say. You look at Atlanta and it has been a fixture on the schedule for a long time. It’s hosted over 100 races, which is pretty incredible. It even hosted three in one year. There is no doubt that Atlanta is in a tough market, but I think this move will help them out in the long run. It should help sell the single Labor Day event out. If we can continue to put on the racing that has defined Atlanta over the years, I think the fans will come back and it will return to two dates.”
Brad Keselowski, No. 12 Penske Dodge Charger

DODGE DRIVER QUOTES
“Winning the two spring races-in-a-row at Atlanta definitely puts a little more confidence into our step coming back in there. But, we’ve seen week in and week out this season just how much things can change from the first race to the second. We understand the challenge that we’re up against.” See much more on this in this week’s advance that follows.

“The Atlanta race is definitely a race that we’ve had a bull’s‐eye on since our big win there back in the spring. With just the two races remaining until the Chase kicks in, we need to go all out in trying to win at Atlanta and Richmond in order to pick up those bonus points for winning races.”
Kurt Busch, No. 2 Miller Lite Dodge Charger

“When you go to Atlanta, you always worry about beating up your tires and the cars have been generally a lot tighter with the change to the spoiler. So for this race, you've really got to take care of your tires so that you can run well at the end of a long run. We were really, really good on the long runs in the spring race so we are looking forward to getting back to Atlanta this weekend.”
Sam Hornish Jr. No. 77 Mobil 1 Dodge Charger

“I like the fact that Atlanta is a very slick racetrack. You come in to put tires on and you are almost three seconds a lap faster. That’s huge! A guy that will come in and pit one lap earlier than you do will gain almost half a straightaway on you. That puts pit strategy into focus. It’s just a fun place to race. I had a lot of success with the high line in the spring race. I don’t really think of myself as a driver that prefers the top, but I’ll definitely search around to see where my car is the fastest. That’s why we love racing at Atlanta.”
Brad Keselowski, No 12 Penske Dodge Charger

DODGE MOTORSPORTS QUOTE OF THE WEEK
“I think that it’s important not to run the car full out the first couple of laps because it will stretch the sidewalls out or chew up the tread and not give you the feel that you need on lap 30 of the run. The more that you take care of them in the beginning, the more that they will take care of you in the end.”
Kurt Busch on tire management at AMS

DODGE NATIONWIDE QUOTES
“Atlanta is a fun, extremely fast track. When you talk to drivers about speed, Atlanta is definitely one of the first tracks that come to mind. The biggest thing about Atlanta is how hard you can race the track, despite how little grip there is compared to some of the other tracks we race at. Atlanta definitely has character; there are bumps and seams that can cause some problems. We didn’t run very well in this race last year, but we didn’t feel that our mile-and-a-half program was very good at that time.”
Justin Allgaier, No. 12 Verizon Wireless Dodge Charger

“We had a tough race last year in Atlanta. Justin had never been there before, and with the schedule the way it is with practicing in the morning, qualifying in the afternoon then racing at night, it certainly provided us a challenge. Atlanta is quite a fast track, and a lot of fun. As the race goes on, there are multiple lines that form through the corners. We’ve got to make sure that our Verizon Dodge is comfortable to take advantage of this. Track position will be key, so our qualifying effort will be critical. The engine department has continued to deliver us outstanding horsepower that will certainly give us a clear cut advantage.”
Chad Walter, crew chief, No. 12 Verizon Wireless Dodge Charger

“We think about our point lead, for sure. I think anyone that says they don’t know where they are in points, or what kind of lead they may have, is not being truthful. It’s nice to have the lead we have in the driver standings, but that doesn’t change the way we approach our weekends. A couple of bad races and Carl (Edwards) will be right there on our heels. But, yeah, it’s a great barometer for the season that we’ve had this year. It’s still amazes me that we are a first- year team because Paul (Wolfe) has them operating like a bunch of veterans. We just need to concentrate on finishing strong and catching the No. 18 car in the owner point’s standings.”
Brad Keselowski, No. 22 Discount Tire Dodge Charger

“We’re very confident in the car we are taking to Atlanta this weekend. Brad finished second at Charlotte in it and we were running second at Chicago when we ran out of fuel. It’s really run well everywhere we’ve raced it. When you look at Atlanta you see similarities to Texas and Charlotte. We want to build on the success we had at both of those tracks this year. Goodyear is bringing a new tire this weekend, so that will be a new challenge that we’ll have to deal with. Managing tire wear is always the name of the game at Atlanta. Brad has shown he can do it as well as anyone.”
Paul Wolfe, crew chief, No. 22 Discount Tire Dodge Charger

Dodge Motorsports Notes & Quotes Kurt Busch Open Interview - Atlanta

HAMPTON, Ga. , Sep 4, 2010 - KURT BUSCH (No. 2 Miller Lite Dodge Charger) HOW WOULD LIKE TO SEE THE 12-RACE CHASE PLAY OUT? “Win all 10 and not give anybody a chance to do anything (laughs). We have our good tracks, our mediocre tracks and a track or two that we’re going to struggle on. The way that I won (the NASCAR championship) in 2004 was that the tracks that I knew I was going to struggle on, we went and tested prior, lead as many laps as we could and really tried to dial our car in and go above and beyond and take away weaknesses. We just can’t go and test with the (NASCAR) testing policies the way that they are now on the tracks that we’re going to struggle at. We’ll just try and do the best job that we can to not take ourselves out of contention. You can’t be out of contention halfway through (the Chase). You still have to be within 80 to 100 points around halfway. There are some good tracks in the beginning for us like Loudon. I really like to go there. Bonus points are important which is leading laps, possibly leading the most if you can. Those wins can really rack up. If you get two wins and a 30th-place finish, those mixed together will be better than running 10th all three weeks. It’s just a matter of seeing what the pace setter will set and just omit some of the troublesome tracks that we’re going to see. We’ll be alright.”

WHAT HAVE BEEN THE STRONG POINTS OF YOUR TEAM THIS YEAR? HAVE THERE BEEN ANY AREAS THAT YOU MIGHT BE WEAK HEADING INTO THE CHASE? “We’re not locked-in (to the Chase), but we’re close. We just can’t have a motor failure like we did at Michigan. If we all do our job as normal with a 10th-place finish this weekend, we will be locked-in.

“The mindset and what we’ve got to do, my past experience says, is to be patient and run a conservative type of program with how you race during the race and get those good, solid finishes and to make sure that there isn’t that one troublesome race that holds you back. This year…2010…feels a lot like 2009 for us. It’s almost identical with a couple of wins heading into the Chase. We were fourth in points, now we’re 10th. The group fourth to 10th, you can put a blanket over all of us; we’re the same. (Kevin) Harvick has run consistent this year. And then you have Denny (Hamlin) and Jimmie (Johnson) that have those wins and (Jeff) Gordon’s run consistent and doesn’t have any wins.”

DO YOU MEAN CONSERVATIVE IN SETUPS? “I mean the approach on the race track. When I see a hole and I can gain a position, if there’s a question, you don’t go get in there. You just let it go for a little bit, fade back to maybe seventh place and just know that there’s time to get it. We hope that we have a dominant car. We hope that we have the speed that we need and go race for that “W”. I would race Jimmie Johnson the way that I did at Loudon. To win a race in the Chase, I wouldn’t do anything different.”

Dodge Motorsports Notes & Quotes - NSCS Final Qualifying - Atlanta

HAMPTON, Ga. , Sep 4, 2010 - KURT BUSCH (No. Miller Lite Dodge Charger) Qualified 11th
HOW WAS YOUR QUALIFYING LAP? “We were a little on the tight side; we were tight in practice. We made some changes at it and picked up speed, but it was just tight. We ran a 29.76 and were just a little off. When you can feel it in the car, you know that you’re going to be a little slow. We’ll see where we end up. Not a bad start for our Miller Lite Dodge.”

ARE TURNS 3 AND 4 PRETTY TRICKY RIGHT NOW? “Yeah, if you hit it just right, you’ll be that pole car. If you’re off a little bit, that’s where it will show up. The tires wear out so fast here that by time you come around to Turn 4, that’s where the tires are going to be worn out the most.”

IS TIRE MANAGEMENT GOING TO BE A KEY TOMORROW? “For sure, but then you can have a yellow flag and guys come in for fresh tires. It’s a long battle for 475 miles and if a yellow comes out, you have to come in and take tires.”

SAM HORNISH JR (No. 77 Mobil 1 Dodge Charger) Qualified 21st
HOW WAS YOUR QUALIFYING LAP? “I was just a little bit too free. We were too tight on our last two practice runs and then freed it up too much. It’s one of those deals where our Mobil 1 Dodge is pretty good in race trim, so we’ll just try and be smart with it and have a good race tomorrow.”

HOW MUCH OF WHAT YOU’VE LEARNED TODAY APPLIES FOR THE RACE TOMORROW NIGHT? “It’s really tough to tell right now. It’s so different tomorrow night. You get things that change from practice that really impacts the setup; how much grip does the track pick up and where it picks grip up are unknowns. If you have a loose car, it’s supposed to get better through the run. What I found in these cars is that generally, some tracks tighten up more, some get more free and some you don’t know what they’re going to do because it changes depending on what tire Goodyear brings to the track. Last year, we tightened up without making a whole lot of changes to the car. I think we want to start the race a little bit free so that we don’t get too tight in the middle and at the end of the race.”

BRAD KESELOWSKI (No. 12 Penske Racing Dodge Charger) Qualified 28th
TALK ABOUT YOUR QUALIFYING RUN? “It was OK. We were just a touch free in (Turns) 1 and 2. I thought 3 and 4 were better. It’s tough to qualify here because the sun really affects the run. This track is really tough when these cars are sliding around. My guys gave me a fast Penske Dodge Charger. I think I probably could have driven it into 1 and 2 a little bit harder. That cost me some time. We’ll take it. It’s a long race tomorrow with a race track that will change dramatically throughout the race.”

Dodge Motorsports Notes & Quotes - NNS Race Final - Atlanta Motor Speedway

HAMPTON, Ga. , Sep 4, 2010

BRAD KESELOWSKI (No. 22 Discount Tire Dodge Charger) Finished 12th
HOW WOULD YOU ASSESS THE EVENING? “We probably had a fourth or fifth-place car. We rolled the dice to win because we want to win. We know that we have a real good shot at winning the driver’s title and it’s looking really good. We’re just going for wins and doing all that we can to do that. We banked a set of tires by staying out on that last yellow. We were really prepared for another yellow to come out and we just didn’t catch it. We just didn’t catch the breaks that we needed to get a solid finish or win the race. We put ourselves in position and sometimes that’s the way it goes. I’m really proud of the effort of the Discount Tire Dodge and everyone at Penske Racing.”

TALK ABOUT THAT GAMBLE TO STAY OUT AND NOT PIT? “Every race that we’ve run, we usually get another yellow and we were banking on getting a yellow in the next 10 to 15 laps or have a green-white checker finish. We really felt with 25 laps on our tires that we could drive to the front and maybe get to the lead or at least maybe the first three. We just didn’t get it (a caution) at the end.”

WHEN DID YOU REALIZE THAT YOUR DECISION NOT TO PIT PROBABLY SEALED YOUR FATE? “When somebody hit the wall and nobody threw a yellow (laughs). It was pretty obvious.”

ON THE LAST RESTART WHEN YOU DECIDED NOT TO PIT AND DROPPED FROM FIRST TO 10TH BEFORE YOU GOT BACK TO THE START-FINISH LINE, WERE YOU SURPRISED HOW FAST YOU DROPPED BACK? “A little bit. When you have 25 laps on your tires, I think we saw with Harvick earlier in the race that he had…we had 14 laps on our tires and he put tires on and got to the lead I think in less than 10 laps. Tires are a big deal here.”

JUSTIN ALLGAIER (No. 12 Verizon Wireless Dodge Charger) Finished 13th
"The tires were so hard; it’s quite ironic they fell off as much as they did. The Verizon Dodge guys did a great job all night. Unfortunately, we rubbed a hole in the exhaust early in the race. Anytime you do that, you lose power like crazy. We just didn’t quite have the car we needed all night. The guys never gave up. They had awesome, awesome pit stops. That’s what it takes. We had a bad night, but still finished 13th. We go on to Richmond where I feel we have a great Verizon Challenger.

“We found something in the middle of the race and it worked really well, but the next to last stop we thought we went a little too far with our adjustments. We took the adjustments out and the car wasn’t as good the rest of the race. The biggest thing for me was how inconsistent the sets of tires were. I felt like from set to set, you never really knew what you were going to get going off into turn one. It’s frustrating, but at the same time, they’re trying to build tires that don’t come apart. That’s been a problem here in the past. They seemed to have fixed that. That’s a plus. We’ve just got to deal with it, get more data at the shop and find a solution to the things we had a problem with tonight. Then when we come back here next year, we can be even better.”
