DODGE MOTORSPORTS QUOTE OF THE WEEK
“We’re focused on winning this weekend at Richmond, picking up those valuable bonus points entering the Chase and going into those final 10 races with a lot of momentum and a full-steam-ahead attitude. Some of the guys have won more races already this season and have more bonus points built up. We need to try to even the score and get on a more level playing field as we head on to Loudon (New Hampshire Motor Speedway) and kick off this year’s Chase."
Kurt Busch, No. 2 Miller Lite Dodge Charger

DODGE MOTORSPORTS ENGINEERING TIDBIT
“Saturday night at Richmond always produces exciting racing. The track seems to widen out during the race and it allows for some great side-by-side racing. It is important to get the car turning well through the center of the corners while still having the rear secure under throttle on exit. Richmond has been a strong track for Sam in NASCAR with two top-10 finishes there last season.”
Travis Geisler, crew chief, No. 77 Mobil 1 Dodge Charger

DODGE DRIVER QUOTES
“Richmond has been a really strong track for us through the years and we’re looking to continue that level of success there this weekend. We finished second there last September and had a really strong Miller Lite Dodge Charger. The record book looks like we struggled in the spring race there and finished 18th, but it really doesn’t tell the whole story. The fact was that we got the car back to the shop and found out that we left the sway bar loose. When that happens, you’re faced with trying to tackle a loose race car and that was definitely the case at Richmond back in the May race.”
Kurt Busch, No. 2 Miller Lite Dodge Charger

“I’ve always enjoyed racing at Richmond International Raceway and have been able to find success there in both NASCAR and the IndyCar Series. Last season, the Mobil 1 team earned top-10 finishes in both races at Richmond and we know we are capable of a strong finish this weekend. Richmond is a multi-groove race track and that makes for exciting racing, but patience is so important. You have to put yourself in position to be there at the end of the race when it matters most.”
Sam Hornish Jr. No. 77 Mobil 1 Dodge Charger

“We need to find just a little more raw speed this weekend when we get back to Richmond. Our qualifying effort was very solid, but we just missed it a little bit on the race setup. We were competitive at the end thanks to a lot of hard work on pit road, but we want to start the race a little better. If we can find those precious tenths of a second – and those last tenths are the hardest to find – I think we can run inside the top-10, or higher.”
Brad Keselowski, No. 12 Penske Dodge Charger

Dodge Motorsports Notes and Quotes - NNS Race Advance - Richmond International Raceway

RICHMOND , Sep 8, 2010 - For Immediate Release
Dodge Motorsports NNS Race Advance
Virginia 529 College Savings 250
Richmond International Raceway
Friday, Sept. 10, 2010

7:30 PM ESPN2

DODGE NUGGETS
• The Dodge Challenger will return to competition this weekend, the third of four races for the “new car” this season. The “new car” will also compete at Charlotte and be fully integrated in 2011.
• Dodge Challenger sales were up 190 percent, compared with the same month in 2009.
• The NNS Dodge Challenger returned to victory lane (Keselowski) at Michigan International Speedway last June after nearly a 30 year absence from NASCAR competition.

DODGE IN THE 2010 NASCAR NATIONWIDE SERIES
Penske Racing’s Dodges have recorded six poles and five wins along with a combined 24 top-five and 35 top-10 finishes. Dodge has been atop the leaderboard for 1,055 laps with drivers Justin Allgaier and Brad Keselowski.

JUSTIN ALLGAIER – No. 12 Verizon Wireless Dodge
Highlights:
• Earned his first NASCAR Nationwide Series victory earlier this year at Bristol Motor Speedway, leading a 1-2 finish for Penske Racing and Dodge.
• Allgaier has one win along with six top-five and 14 top-10 finishes in 26 Nationwide races in 2010.
• He is currently fourth in the season point standings, best among full-time Nationwide Series-only drivers.
• Qualified ninth and finished 15th at the spring event at RIR.
• Average finish at Richmond is 20.3 in three Nationwide races.
• Won the 2008 ARCA championship.
• Was the 2009 Nationwide Series Rookie of the Year.

BRAD KESELOWSKI – No. 22 Discount Tire Dodge
Highlights:

• Currently leads the Nationwide Series standings by 332 points over Carl Edwards. He has led the standings since his win at Talladega in April.
• At the spring race at Richmond, Keselowski qualified fourth and led 189 of 250 laps en route to the win.
• Earned back-to-back wins at Talladega and Richmond and has four wins in 2010.
• Leads the Nationwide Series in top fives (18) and top 10s (21). He has only one finish outside the top 15 (Chicago – 21st).
• He is using chassis PRS-204, the same Challenger he drove to victory at Michigan in August.
• Has a NASCAR record 93 consecutive Nationwide Series races without a DNF (Did Not Finish).

DODGE NATIONWIDE QUOTES
“I feel that racing at Richmond is as good as it gets. The fans get to see good, close racing - and it’s at night, which makes it that much better. You carry a lot of speed down the straightaways, and when you get to the corner, it feels like you almost come to a complete stop. It’s a fun track. I wish there were more like it on the circuit, but I think that if someone tried to create a similar track, they’d have a hard time perfecting it the way that it’s been done there. It truly is a unique race track, and a lot of fun to drive.”
Justin Allgaier, No. 12 Verizon Wireless Dodge Charger

“The real challenge for us going back to Richmond is making sure we run well with the new car. It obviously drives differently. We won’t be able to use the setup notes from the spring race. That’s a little bit of a shame because we were so good with the old car, but we’ve also been very strong and consistent in the new Dodge Challenger. So I feel very good about our chances this weekend. We should be very competitive and I feel that we will contend for the win. Richmond is a place that I’ve really learned how to get around over the last couple of years.”
Brad Keselowski, No. 22 Discount Tire Dodge Charger

Dodge Motorsports Notes & Quotes - Kurt Busch Open Interview - Richmond 2

RICHMOND , Sep 10, 2010 -

KURT BUSCH (No. 2 Miller Lite Dodge Charger)

TALK ABOUT ADDING ANOTHER WIN THIS YEAR AT TOMORROW’S RACE HERE IN RICHMOND? “We definitely want to (win). It’s a unique opportunity for us to go for a win and try something a little different with the setup and hopefully lead ourselves in a solid direction for a good chunk of the races in the Chase. Richmond is somewhat comparable to Loudon, Phoenix and a little bit of Martinsville. We were up in Milwaukee a couple weeks ago testing. We took the whole team up to Milwaukee. We had all three teams as well as Parker Kligerman driving a fourth car. So, it was a full two days of testing with all of Penske’s cars. I felt like that it was a very beneficial test and so far, it’s shown a little bit of speed since we’ve been here. We’re just going to continue the general pattern of what we learned up there at testing. We’ll see how everything shakes out. It would be great to drive the Miller Lite Dodge into victory lane this Saturday night. That would definitely bode well for a third of the Chase races where we have those flat tracks. We feel like once we get past this weekend, then its game time and the season begins with the playoffs and the Chase format and how you have to be solid each and every week. With the way that we ran last week, a little bit off on setup, but we came home with a sixth-place finish, those are the types of days that turn it into a championship-like effort.”

DO YOU THINK THAT THE CHASE IS GOING TO BE A HOME RUN DERBY WHERE YOU’LL HAVE TO WAIT FOR GUYS TO MAKE MISTAKES? “Just with the recent run of guys falling quite a bit in points when they do have a problem, that’s where it does lend itself to not making mistakes. We were fourth in points going into Michigan and went all the way back to 10th. Denny Hamlin was up in the points before Atlanta and blew a motor; he fell all the way back to 10th. It’s almost like a beltway of cycling the cars around on who’s doing good and they stay up there and drop back to the bottom when they have a problem. Mistakes are definitely what you have to stay away from early on especially.”

DO YOU THINK THAT PENSKE HAS AN ADVANTAGE OR DISADVANTAGE WITH ONLY ONE CAR IN THE CHASE? “I feel like we’re going to use it to our advantage the best way that we can. We’re the only Penske car in the Chase. I’ve got Sam Hornish Jr. this weekend with the same exact setup in his race car and he’s out there gathering notes for us. They changed a sway bar or a rear shock and (telling us) this is what it did, what it felt like. That’s already in place. He’s going to have the same setup to start every weekend to make it look like we have two cars putting the same footprint down. I’ve been on the other side of the fence at Roush where we had five cars in the Chase one year. I remember racing Matt Kenseth at Kansas Speedway just trying to get five points from him leading a lap. He’s like, ‘I have to go up against you to win this championship. I’m not going to let you lead a lap.’ That can definitely hurt teammates when they’re racing together and they both have a shot at the championship. So we’re using this scenario where we’re the only team from Penske in it. We’re the only Dodge in it. We’re putting all of our eggs in one basket and that’s the 2 car.”

WHAT DO YOU THINK YOUR CHANCES ARE OF WINNING THE CHAMPIONSHIP? AND DO YOU LIKE NOT HAVING THE TARGET ON YOUR BACK LIKE KEVIN (HARVICK) OR JIMMIE (JOHNSON)? “It’s always good to go in under the radar; that’s what helped us in 2004. We weren’t expected to run up front and be contenders all the way through those 10 races. I can’t quite pull that card anymore with what the end result was – winning the (NASCAR) championship. Those guys have definitely run better than us and deserve the spotlight. We’re going to do what we can to not make mistakes and position ourselves so that once the Chase is halfway through; we have a legitimate shot at it. We could be leading; we could be within 100 points, that’s what I call the range that I think you need to be in. Those guys got all the pressure to perform because they’ve done it the first 25 races.”

BRAD (KESELOWSKI) SAID YESTERDAY THAT HE THINKS THAT THE DODGE’S ARE LACKING SPEED? DO YOU HAVE TO WIN ON STRATEGY? “We have to work as hard as we can no matter if we think it’s the Dodge, or if it’s the Penske chassis. Right now, he’s definitely focused on his Nationwide program and we just need to do the best that we can in all areas. I keep saying that there are different areas that you have a report card. I wouldn’t say that we have an A-plus in any specific area, but I’m not going to give us anything lower than a “C” in other areas. If you have five to 10 different grades that you’re giving yourself, you hope that you have more “A’s” than “B’s”, maybe that’s what Brad is alluding too, the fact that he sees too many items that we have to pay attention to and improve on. What we have isn’t that bad.”

HAVE YOU GUYS LOST SOME ADVANTAGE THAT YOU HAD EARLIER IN THE SEASON ON THE MILE-AND-A-HALF PROGRAM? “The mile-and-halves are definitely the most important ingredient in the Chase. We have slipped off a bit. I talked to Roger (Penske) and our team engineers about it. We have a few conclusions. We’ve noticed that we struggled at some of the summer time races where it’s really hot out and the tracks rubber-in. When we unload, we’re pretty good, but when the practices wear on and as the races wear on, we lose a little bit of overall grip. With the fall months approaching and heading into a little bit cooler weather, we know that will help us. We just seem to run better when it’s cooler out and those night races; our success at Atlanta earlier this year as well as the Charlotte race. We’re excited to head to Charlotte because it’s a night race in the Chase. Texas, we’ll have cooler weather. Homestead is usually decent when we head down there. That’s something that I wish that we could put our thumb on and change it, but sometimes it’s just hard when the tracks grease up and find the right setup.”

WHAT ISSUES DO YOU EXPECT TO COME UP DURING THE CHASE? “Just being able to stay out of trouble is going to be key. With double-file restarts and a lot of different teams gain (spots) at the end of the races, you don’t want to fall into other team’s traps. If they’re just trying to do two tires to gain all that track position and search for a 10th-place finish, that’s what they’re going to do. You just have to run your own race. I always believed that the Chase is about consistency, not make any mistakes and most importantly, be competitive. That’s where we’re in the mix. We’re in the competitive and there are just so many good times out there that it’s going to be hard to know who has the advantage going in.”

DO YOU THINK LEADING LAPS IN THE CHASE IS GOING TO BE IMPORTANT? “Of these 10 races, somebody get bonus points for leading the most laps every race and that’s an opportunity of 50 points. Those are the toughest 50 to get. If you just go out there and lead one lap in 10 races, that’s not that difficult to do, but it gives you 50 solid points. I think that it’s more important to lead a lap and if you have the car to do it, then you go out there and lead the most laps. Winning the 2004 championship, Greg Biffle led the most laps down in Homestead in the final race and he was able to keep Jimmie and Jeff Gordon from not leading a lap that day. That’s a 10-point swing in my favor when we led a lap and those guys didn’t. We won the championship by eight points. Leading laps is definitely important, it’s just tough to lead them all.”

Dodge Motorsports Notes & Quotes - NNS Race Final Quotes - Richmond 2

RICHMOND , Sep 10, 2010 -

BRAD KESELOWSKI (No. 22 Ruby Tuesday Dodge Challenger) Finished Second
“We started off OK and really fell off. Paul Wolfe (crew chief) and all the Ruby Tuesday team worked on the car all night and made it way better throughout the race. We just needed a little bit there at the end to catch Kevin (Harvick) because he was awesome all night. What a great battle at the end. He was so good on long runs. We had to slow our cars down on the short runs to try and keep up with him. We were just a little bit off. It was a good night for me and this whole team; I really appreciate all their hard work. This Dodge Challenger was fast, real fast. Another good points night for us. I hope that the fans enjoyed it because that was some great racing.”

WHAT DID YOU THINK WHEN YOU SAW ALL THAT LAPPED TRAFFIC IN FRONT OF KEVIN LATE IN THE RACE? “I didn’t know how it was going to play out. He got loose that one lap and I thought that he was in trouble when he slid his right-rear tire. I just couldn’t get him there at the end. He’s a heck of a driver; you have to give him credit.”

HOW TOUGH WAS TIRE MANAGEMENT TONIGHT? “Real tough. A heck of a race and we did all that we could to try and save them. We just didn’t have enough for Kevin at the end.”

WHAT DID YOU LEARN ABOUT THIS NEW CAR TONIGHT ON THE SHORT-TRACK? “You’re always learning with this new car. We were really good on short runs and not as good on the long ones. We have to find a better balance on the longer runs. We tried to dial it in and it got better as the race went on, just not good enough.”

PAUL WOLFE (crew chief, No. 22 Ruby Tuesday Dodge Challenger)
“It seemed like a long night for us tonight. We started off OK on the short run and then the car just went terrible. We were losing a lot of time and knew that we had to make some big adjustments to get to where we needed to be. We worked on it during the first stop and made some small gains. Our second stop, we got a car that he could race with and from there, Brad raced his butt off in that Dodge Challenger. I’m proud of the whole team and what Brad’s been able to do. When the car isn’t perfect, he can make up for it and has the confidence in us making the changes to get him comfortable.”

WAS TIRE MANAGEMENT IMPORTANT FOR YOU?
“You just don’t know enough about these new cars to really understand what to expect sometimes. Now that we have some data on a short track, we can evaluate our car and try to get it better. We just have to go to work and get as much information as we can to help us get faster.”

JUSTIN ALLGAIER (No. 12 Verizon Wireless Dodge Challenger) Finished 12th
“I felt we would be better than we were. We actually were really good on long runs. Unfortunately, these new cars are going to a lot of people’s heads, causing some of them to forget what respect is. Unfortunately, we got run into quite a few times, especially on restarts. It’s hard to pass here anyway. When you get run into, it makes it even harder because you’re losing spots left and right. Our new Challenger was awesome. I wish we could have run a little longer under green. I think we would have been in a lot better shape at the finish. But the race went the way it went and we finished 12th, another top 15 for us. We’ll make our Challenger better by Charlotte and hopefully, run up front.”

PARKER KLIGERMAN (No. 26 Dodge Challenger) Finished 15th
“It wasn’t what we came here to do, we thought we had a really good shot at a top 10, even a top five tonight. We ran in the top 10 the first part of the race and I guess we had a commitment cone violation. The way it was explained at the driver’s meeting, I’m not too sure about that penalty. We came back from two laps down and brought our Dodge Challenger home in one piece. That’s hard to do at this track. It was good work tonight by the whole Penske Racing team.”
