Only 12% of the new vehicles sold by FCA Canada are cars
Fiat Chrysler Automobiles is number one in Canadian sales, no thanks to cars
August 18th 2015
Just as the company is this year, Fiat Chrysler Automobiles, formerly the Chrysler Group, was the top-selling automobile manufacturer in Canada through the first seven months of 2014.
At the end of July 2014, however, Fiat Chrysler Automobile’s hold on the top spot didn’t appear nearly as secure as it does this year. By the end of July last year, FCA had surrendered the monthly lead to the Ford Motor Company in four consecutive months, and FCA’s 7% year-over-year increase wasn’t nearly as impressive as Ford MoCo’s 15% leap forward. By year’s end, the Ford Motor Company finished nearly 2,000 sales ahead of FCA.
2015 appears to be a different story. Ford MoCo sales have declined in Canada in each of the last six months, tumbling 6% in July even as FCA posted a 2% increase.
Ford’s leading product, the F-Series, is Canada’s best-selling vehicle. But the F-Series, which accounts for more than four out of every 10 Ford MoCo sales, is down 6% through the first seven months of 2015 and the most recent monthly declines have been even worse than that. FCA’s top-selling vehicle meanwhile, the Ram line of pickup trucks, is up 8%, year-to-date, FCA says.
If Fiat Chrysler is going to hang on to the company’s top position, they’ll have to do it with very little help from passenger cars. The automaker’s small fleet of offerings – Chrysler’s 200 and 300, the Alfa Romeo 4C, Fiat 500, and Dodge’s Charger, Challenger, Dart, and Viper – are down a combined 10%, year-over-year.
