Recall Again Alert: Chrysler UPDATE (air bag)

01/31/2015

NEW YORK -- More than 2 million Toyota, Chrysler and Honda vehicles are being recalled for a second fix for faulty air bags that may inadvertently inflate while the car is running.

The recall includes some Acura MDX, Dodge Viper, Jeep Grand Cherokee, Honda Odyssey, Pontiac Vibe, Toyota Corolla and Toyota Avalon models made from 2002 to 2004. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration says all of the vehicles covered in Saturday's announcement had already been under a recall for the faulty air bags, but the carmakers' original attempts to fix the defects only worked about 85 percent of the time.

The new recall will fully replace the faulty electronic control unit, which is made by TRW Automotive Holdings Corp of Livonia, Mich. In the previous recall the unit was only partially replaced. The new remedy will be available to all affected vehicles by the end of the year.

However, the NHTSA is urging consumers with cars under the first recall to have the partial unit installed, even if they have to return to the dealer under the second recall.

"Even though it's a temporary solution until the new remedy is available," NHTSA Administrator Mark Rosekind said, consumers "and their families will be safer if they take the time to learn if their vehicle is covered and follow their manufacturers' instructions."

About 39 air bags have inadvertently deployed that had been remedied under the previous recall.

The agency says about 1 million Toyota and Honda vehicles involved in the new recalls are also subject to a separate recall related to defective air bags made by Takata Corp. of Japan. Those air bags can deploy and rupture with enough force to cause injury or death.

In nine cases, cars had problems that included both the inadvertent deployment and the Takata rupture. Three of those cases resulted in injuries, including eye injuries, scratches and burns.

No death or injuries related to non-Takata air bag failures have been reported.

The announcement comes days after the family of Carlos Solis filed a lawsuit against Takata. Solis, 35, died on Jan. 18 in a minor crash in a Houston suburb. The lawsuit alleges that as an air bag in his 2002 Honda Accord inflated, it sent a piece of metal into his neck. Solis died at the scene. His death has not officially been linked to the air bag.

Takata is under fire for air bag inflators that can explode, shooting out metal and plastic pieces. At least five deaths and dozens of injuries have been linked to the problem worldwide. Ten automakers have recalled about 12 million vehicles in the U.S. and about 19 million globally for problems with the air bags. The company is still trying to determine the cause of the problem.

Statement: Occupant Restraint Control Module/Filter

Statement: Occupant Restraint Control Module/Filter

January 31, 2015 , Auburn Hills, Mich. -

FCA US LLC is launching a global recall of older-model SUVs and cars to replace their occupant restraint control (ORC) modules and, if necessary, certain impact sensors.

The campaign will upgrade a repair performed as part of a 2012 recall. In that action, a filter was installed to ensure proper function of a potentially faulty ORC module supplied to FCA US and two other vehicle manufacturers.

Since that time, a small number of vehicles affected by the initial campaign (approximately 0.003 percent of the total) were subject to post-repair inadvertent air-bag deployments. Some vehicle occupants suffered minor injuries from contact with the air bags; FCA US is aware of a single related accident.

The new campaign affects an estimated 928,497 vehicles. Estimated volumes by market are as follows: 753,156 in the U.S.; 49,870 in Canada; 21,838 in Mexico; and 103,633 are outside the NAFTA region.

Affected models are 2002-2004 Jeep Cherokees and Grand Cherokees, 2002-2003 Jeep Libertys and 2003-2004 Dodge Vipers. FCA US is unaware of any related air-bag deployments involving either this population of Vipers or the 2004 Cherokees, but the Company is including them in the campaign out of an abundance of caution.

These vehicles are not equipped with Takata Corp. air bags.

New ORC modules are being developed for the upgrade. Some vehicles also may require new front- and/or side-impact sensors to accommodate software compatibility.

FCA US will notify all affected customers and advise them when they may schedule service. Customers with additional concerns or questions may call 1-800-853-1403.

Statement: Restraint-System Software Upgrade

Statement: Restraint-System Software Upgrade
February 2, 2015 , Auburn Hills, Mich. -

FCA US LLC is launching a global recall of an estimated 228,181 SUVs to upgrade software governing side-curtain and seat-mounted side air bags.

The action follows an investigation by FCA US engineers after a small number of inadvertent deployments involving drivers who executed extreme maneuvers. These maneuvers dramatically changed the vehicles’ angle of operation, relative to the ground.

The air-bag systems, sensing potential rollovers, automatically activated. FCA US is unaware of any related injuries or accidents.

The software upgrade will recalibrate the threshold for deployment and the vehicles will remain compliant with all applicable safety regulations.

Affected are certain 2014 and 2015 Jeep Cherokees. Estimated volumes by market are as follows: 168,092 in the U.S.; 19,557 in Canada; 4,133 in Mexico and 36,399 outside the NAFTA region.

The Company will notify affected customers. Software will be available at that time.

Customers with additional concerns or questions may call 1-800-853-1403.
